I think Finke is just too smart to tip his hand with the uncertainty of recruiting, and the temperature of Groce's seat.... I'd speculate that Tilmon/Goodwin signing, and a '17 tourney bid locks him up hard.

Ayo is gonna be the elusive one.

Any thought on which recruits will be swayed the most by Tilmon? Goodwin, Verge, Eastern etc?

my understanding was Tilmon was first to go, then 3 or 4 others would be following....talks of a monster class....then Tilmon got cold feet when the off court stuff went down....Williams wasn't going to wait around so he jumped....but Tilmon has been huge on the loyalty to the state, that's why most were speculating that he would be first to fall, then be important to recruit others...see, Goodwin.....also why Tilmon wanted to wrap this early so he could eliminate any misses on fellow friends/recruits going forward.....my guess is Goodwin is next

also, understand how this works.....groce has been masterful in putting ILL in a position to pick and choose going forward....he has so much leverage now its amazing what he has done.....you all know I am a MICHIGAN man at heart...but I am remain respectful of the ILL due to my ties and want nothing for the best for a great person like John Groce....

Lets be honest. Finke, a long shot? Thats about as minimal of a longshot as there can be. We have as good a chance if not better than any.

Henrickson doesn't sound incredibly optimistic about our chances with Finke and Ayo right now. Sounds like they will be a long shot...

Heard from an INSIDER the young Finke might go where he feels best gets him to the next level. Guessing the Tilmon commit (and potential dominoes) would probably excite him.

Ayo is a helluva player and I'd love to have him. But he's not a must get. 2018 and 19 have several strong PG candidates and we have a good/great shot at landing one.

Aside from Goodwin, who are the other recruits that could realistically be included in the monster in your opinion?

Pretty sure of the 3-4 Lefty mentioned 2 are Goodwin and Damonte. That leaves 1-2. I would think you can take your pick of Scruggs, Eastern, Smith and some others to guess at it.

Javon Pickett was the first to jump. He is good friends with Goodwin and Tilmon and said from the beginning that he would work to get them to come with him. He is forgotten by some. Better player than some give him credit for. Averaged 25 as a junior and first team all stater in the large class. From Malcolm Hill's high school, another player who was underrated coming in, too. imo Pickett talked about recruiting Goodwin and Tilmon when he committed:

Wischnowsky has never been all that tied into recruiting and he's a well-known Groce-hater. I take a lot of those sorts of tweets by him with a large grain of salt.

Hold on there. There's a huge difference between holding someone accountable and being a hater. It's important to note the difference, because even though this is something to celebrate, the on court results HAVE to be there.

Dave Wischnowski wants nothing more than for Groce to get 0 credit for anything successful. He is jonesin' harder that anybody I've seen to see Illinois have a terrible season so that Groce can be fired. Controls his entire narrative. His 'sources' are always very accurate since they always seem to chime in after the breaking news...

This is so clearly not true. You don't have to be a homer to root for Illinois. I'm sure Dave would love Illinois to do well, but he has serious and reasonable concerns. As far as I'm concerned Tilmon having an allegiance to the school over the coach is great news, and will allow an easier decision on Groce if the results aren't there.

That being said, let's enjoy this day!

Tilmons commitment changes Easterns whole recruitment

Do you think the staff would take both Eastern and Goodwin? If so, it seems like there'd be no room for another PG. I guess we'd hope that between Da'Monte, Eastern, and Goodwin, at least one would become serviceable as a backup PG (or starter depending on how TJL pans out; they all have some of the right traits, and so does JCL).

I could see the vague possibility of taking Goodwin, Smith, and Eastern. It would leave us thin at PG and C, but the amount of pure talent would be off the charts. We'd have some combo guard-ish types and a bunch of guys who could defend the 1 through 4. At least defensively it would be a positionless clones situation.

I'm remaining very pessimistic. Although Groce and Illinois have historically been after him pretty hard the past few years. Dating back to 2014.

In mid June Eastern said that he and Jeremiah talk to each other quite a bit about playing together at the next level. He may not be what we need but I do not think the staff would pass on a player of his caliber.

Apologize if this is a dumb question, but where does Eastern fit if Goodwin hops on board too?

If your rim-protector and your ball handler slots are both filled, take as many high-level wing players as you can get. Can't get enough of 'em in a Groce style playbook.

I have no idea how it would shake out, but if Eastern wants to join the party, you pretty much have to take him.
