I think we need to chill on the Tilmon commitment talk unless there is more evidence/rumblings. A lot of things could happen in the life of a teenager that could be considered "big."

Well that doesn't sound like any fun. I much prefer the everyone freaking out path. Much more entertaining

His team got beat right away in bracket play after they had three extreme blowouts in pool play. They are done.
Have no idea how he did. It is not an event covered by anyone it appears.
Folks here swear the offers will come pouring in this month for this kid thouhg and we need to take his verbal ASAP.
Just wish we could see how he handles himself versus some top AAU teams.

Now that the CB's (including Meyer) have swung to Illinois, no school in their right mind will make him an offer. :D

I'm not all that crazy about Frazier myself, but mostly it has to do with wishing I knew what our chances are with Scruggs. They may only be 5 percent, but if we take a Frazier commit now they become zero percent.
But if Groce wants Trent that bad, I'm in. I guess.

But isn't that effectively how Groce has gotten into his current situation... holding out for the Scruggs of the world only to come in second place without another option because it is late in the game. He has gotten slaughtered for that on here yet people are complaining about Frazier who is exactly the type of guy he didn't get in previous years while trying to reel in DJax, Brunson, etc.

yeah, there's that argument and it's valid. But when people complained it was more like we were passing on guys like Glynn Watson. Except for Scout and Bruce Weber, nobody else seems to think Frazier is all that great. (And our staff.) If he develops I'll be happy to say I was wrong.

added: I guess my biggest question comes from how little time he got with Nike South Beach on the EYBL circuit this spring. I know they had a couple of good guards but if he's a high D1 prospect he should've gotten more than 5 or 10 minutes a game.

Agree with above, but I think folks were thinking to set the sights a little higher for the Plan B kids while going after the McDAA or Top 50 kids.
A depth chart of Jaylon Tates at PG is not going to cut it. Hopefully Lucas and Frazier who seem to maybe have a higher ceiling (although Tate had a few D1 offers) will develop into productive Big Ten point guards.

This concerns me also. He is not out there in AAU this summer playing and testing himself against the better competition.

With Frazier, I guess you just have to trust the staff. They zeroed in on him pretty early and have made him a high priority over the last year despite his ranking. I'm thinking it has a lot to do with his fit in Groce's ball screen O.

Frazier may not be a great player overall, but if he can shoot threes at a decent clip off the dribble with a quick release, and he has a good enough first step to burn a defender going over the top of a screen, that's solid gold in this offense.

Does anyone have a sense that we're a serious threat to land Scruggs? I was glancing at a Purdue board and they were talking about Goodwin like he was maybe a long shot but still a legit possibility. I was like, "ha! There's no way Purdue has a chance with J-Good." And then I thought about us and Scruggs. Similar situation, or are we a real player?

Probably not a real player for Scruggs and it probably does make sense to take a Frazier commit. I mean, I'm not going to go one on one against Groce and the staff as far as player evals go. They're professionals and I'm not. But I just keep thinking of Bruce W and Jalen James and Mike Orris. And Bruce and Baylor being the only other high d1 offers for Frazier so far. He's playing with the Wellington Wolves in AAU tourneys that are basically high school teams.
But -- it's all good. I cheer for anyone who wants to be here and wears Illinois on his chest.

If Groce lands Tilmon and Goodwin before summer ends; Illinois will be a player for Scruggs.

oh, I'm chillin'. 5-star big man down to us and Kansas? I'm not doing any cartwheels before the announcement I assure you. Just reporting info.

Yeah, I didn't mean you specifically. My Twitter feed was flooded with people going nuts over something that seems non specific.

Wouldn't those skills translate to just about any offense?

TCTORNADO seems to think we are a real player for Scruggs. We certainly have strong connections.

Interesting article that touches on some of the questions and arguments that have gone on here about July recruiting.
What is the July Live Period and why is it so important?

I've recently learned a lot more about summer tournaments, and it's a crazy racket. One of the things I've learned about is The Book.

To get into these events, college coaches have to buy The Book. The Book is a list of all the teams attending that tournament, their rosters, and all the pools/brackets for the tournament. It's a crappy, stapled-together stack of paper. The information in The Book is largely accurate, but riddled with mistakes. Oh, and it costs $500-$600 per copy. Coaches pay this without batting an eye because The Book is their ticket in, and they need to be at that tourney. Tournament operators will make up to $150,000 in cash from selling these books.

I have mixed feelings what could happen here. IU is touting a class of Scruggs/Wilkes/Jackson & Williams as one of the best of all time, but I also think IU is leaning the Romelo lLangford route out of New Allbany=he's top 10 but a 2018. LVille is a player here big time. I think staff could go the Eastern route but got confused there that Eastern made an UV to Michigan last week and got an offer.Scruggs canceling his Illinois visit recently sort of sent a question mark. Brian Snow says he would be shocked if it's anybody but IU or XU. But people were shocked that we got JCL, who also had an IU offer since the 8th grade like Scruggs. Yes, connections between Groce and Scruggs are great and the Coleman-Lands "family" connections are a huge factor here. This one is an excellent example of "recruiting is fluid"and could go down to the end. I think we will be a final 5 player in this recruitment.

On snapchat, Tilmon posted a story of an edit with his top 5 schools and had the message "will be announcing soon."

Final 5 isn't even close to holding off on a Frazier commitment (not suggesting you disagree, FWIW). Groce has to feel he has better than a puncher's chance at reeling Scruggs in, to slow play a Frazier verbal.

Wow... have we ever been picked by 100% of those analysts for a kid even close to the level of Tilmon?

Yep. Jawun Evans.

EDIT: However, this is more encouraging because of the hints that Tilmon may be committing tomorrow?

I stand corrected, I think Scruggs is already down to 5--Illinois, IU, MSU, LVille and XU.

Agreed, but for fans it makes for some great games. I've really done a 180 on AAU over the last few years and it's mostly just selfish reasons. The game last night between PSA and Penny was as good a game as any you'll see during the regular season in hs or college for atmosphere and level of play. 5 top 25 kids in the game, PSA came from 18 down to win in the last seconds, crowd and players going bonkers, coaches from Duke, Kansas and Kentucky 3 and 4 deep in the stands. And the overtime game the night before between MOKAN and Howard Pulley was almost as good. Trae Young and Gary Trent Jr just going off. Totally insane. Today's Peach Jam final should be great too and although I don't see PSA being able to take down MOKAN, I almost turned off the feed when they were losing big against Penny. Glad I didn't. Today it's Porter (#4 ESPN) vs Bomba (#3) and Young(#21) vs. Green (#22) plus Cart'Are Gordon (#24 2018) and Cole Anthony (#9 2019) and a couple of other guys in the top 100.
And since the only sports I follow are high school and college hoops (and the recruiting season), AAU games in the summer are a treat for me, even knowing there is sleaze going on. It's basically like following college ball, knowing a lot of coaches are less than stellar individuals.
