Unless we get Goodwin or another Top 50 kid instead, I think it will be just a pretty nice top 20 or so class.
Tilmon was huge get for sure.
Right now we have two three star guys and if we add Frazier another three star.

Really need another big dog to make a Top 10 type class.

Still behind the type of classes being reeled in by top tier programs, but definitely a nice step for us.

Depends on the rankings you trust. Williams is a four star on Rivals and ranked #77.

Pickett may stay a three star but he is playing well this week and, I think, underrated. I am biased, I'm sure, because the two times I saw him play last year he had 41 and 30+.

Frazier is blowing up. It is not unreasonable to think he could end up as a four star.

What kind of adjustments if I may ask?

For one, he's no longer swinging for the fences on every pitch. The "5-star or bust" days are gone. He now seems to understand that we can have a terrific roster with a solid mix of major national recruits and solid role players.

Second, he is now completing the process of forging the relationships with people whom he can trust to work with him in landing major recruits. I think he put too much trust in some untrustworthy people in his early years as a head coach. He has learned from getting burned.

There's more to each of those points, and there are several other ways in which he has improved in his recruiting and roster-assembly approach. Now, as he assembles an excellent roster, I'm hoping he will add a terrific x-and-o assistant for better in-game results. If we're patient, I think we'll wind up with a really good head coach in John Groce.

A 5 star, 4 4 stars and an underrated 3 star, who will in all likelihood, redshirt. I'll take that class, all day every day.

Who are the four 4 stars? Goodwin if we get him and who else? You guys are drinking the Kool Aid a little heavy tonight. :D

From my time watching the game and the big ten. Trent Frazier reminds me of a southpaw Taylor battle. Deep range & can score but undersized

To follow the Taylor battle -Trent Frazier comparison. Illinois fans should want that any day all day! Clutch tough nosed guard with a chip

I would take a Taylor Battle type player any day. I like the possibility of having players like Goodwin and Frazier with toughness and high motors playing together.

What do our 3 recruits have in common? They are all very talented down-state players. I'm a Chicago guy and wish it wasn't true, but downstate players give Illinois a premium, while Chicago gives it a second look. If you look at who is left on the board in-state it is one down state guy (Goodwin) and two suburban players (Smith, Eastern). Suburbs have been better than Chicago the last 20 years or so.

Groce I believe has improved his recruiting and has built better relationships as his tenure increases. But 2017 has a bumper crop for downstate. Last time it was this rich was the Mclain, Griffin, FWilliams, Cook years and this occured over the span of 3 years.

Justin Young ‏@JustinDYoung 12m12 minutes ago Saturday stud: Trent Frazier of Florida Elite is taking on all comers. Was terrific (again) today. Has team in #BOTS Final Four.

How different you can feel about a player in just one week's time. I was a skeptic and while this wasn't Peach Jam, it was a legit tourney with 72 17u teams including some Nike EYBL squads and he's been one of the best 5 or 6 players in it. My opinion counts for nought but I'll be happy if we get him.

Frazier is point guard material at the next level. Some seem to be skeptical about him being a true 1 but the court vision & passing are there. Frazier is fast offense :thumb:

Seems like TJL's HS teammate Deontay Long(2019) is calling us his favorite right now. Extremely early but it's still something. Kid seems like he has the tools to become a very good player.

Rivals article on Epperson, plus Theo John, Chase Adams.

Jacob Epperson, a 6-foot-11, 210-pounder playing with AUSA Hoops, won't wow you with highlight reel plays but he will leave you looking forward to seeing more because of the plays that he does make.

Epperson is a long, mobile and agile center who runs the floor well. He has good hands and was the best big man passer we saw in the first two days of Summer Jam. Whether passing out of the low post when the double team arrives or from the high post to a teammate cutting to the basket, Epperson delivered passes where teammates could make plays.

On the defensive end, Epperson's presence and length affected more than his fair share of shots. When he grabs defensive rebounds he gets the ball out quickly to start fast breaks.

Since when is Williams a 3*?

Groce and the staff built a great relationship with TJL's HS coach which is carrying over. Helps a lot when you don't have to start over to earn a coach's trust and already have that established relationship.

Yep. John Groce has made a few adjustments in his approach to recruiting, and he now seems to be dialing up all the right numbers. :thumb:

It's far from over, of course, but this year may be a great illustration of the serendipity of jobs like college coaching. John Groce's entire career might literally hinge on his ability to convince one 18 yr old basketball player to trust him. That Tilmon came along at the right time, and has the right skill set and size, and lives in the right area, and that Groce was able to identify and connect with him early, and that he has good friends who are also great players and guys Illinois wants... If any of those things doesn't work out, the whole class could look different.

I know, someone else might have filled in instead, but as past history shows there are so many uncertainties in recruiting. Some other big man, even if we found one even close to Tilmon's ability, wouldn't necessarily have had the connections and draw with the local kids we want to affect the overall group.

When Groce missed on Brunson/Evans and Cliff/Snider (when it also looked like he had done everything he could) it could very well have spelled the end (if not for some other serendipitous events in the athletic department that, it can be argued, ended up distracting some of the attention away from the basketball failures). But he got another chance and has worked very hard, certainly, but also had the good luck to have several things fall into place so that he might actually sign that great class that then makes his coaching look better, and ultimately saves his long term career prospects.

Not a job that I think I would enjoy!
