He's saying Nike wouldn't push Goodwin to a Nike school as hard. As he wouldn't be as important to Nike if a few of the 5*'s go Nike.
Then adidas would push harder to get him to an adidas school. They would need him more than Nike. For instance, see Carlton Bragg, that was a classic brand recruitment.

I don't keep up with these things, so correct me if I'm wrong, but the only non-Nike school I see in his latest list is Northwestern, which is Under Armour. IU and TAMU are the only two adidas schools that seem to have been involved.

He was referring to the Cliff recruitment. UI is Nike and KU is Adidas. Not sure who the two recruits he referred to are but Okafor and Stanley Johnson both committed to Nike schools the same day.
Also Cliff at one point played for Adidas AAU and switched to the Fire in his final season for the EYBL.
Well sure - but I guess I didn't understand how it related to Goodwin specifically since there were no Adidas schools on his list.
That's a pretty fair comp, I just didn't see as much of Smith's games to make that leap.
In terms of a physical leadership and do-what-it-takes to win, I think he reminds me most of Sergio McClain. I don't think Serg had any one offensive skill that was superior in high school or college. The dude just put the ball through the bucket any way he could, was very physical on D' and had the quickest hands I've seen, except for Frankie.

Ahh - I get the OP's comment now. More a sarcastic nod toward the Cliff circus than anything relevant to Goodwin.
A fact not to be ignored when thinking about our new Nike contract.
The Serge comp is pretty popular and makes a lot of sense. Goodwin is an interesting player: he has the profile of a high-level role player/glue guy/emotional leader, which is what I expected him to become until the last 12 months. Over the past year, though, he's dropped baby fat, become more explosive, dramatically improved as a ball handler, and proven that he can dominate elite national competition as a scorer. Now he looks to me like a potential star at the B1G level. I think his floor is Sergio-like or a better Lenzelle Smith, but his ceiling is some amalgamation of Marcus Smart, Roosevelt Jones, and Draymond Green. If he comes here, I think he'll end up on the program's Mt Rushmore in four years.

This is actually my concern. I managed to remain somewhat disappointed in Sergio's career, especially given his high school success. He had career stats of 6.6pts, 4.0 rbds and 2.4 assists per game. I really hope Goodwin can eclipse those numbers, and by a fair margin.

He also got a Memphis offer recently. Maybe he forgot to add them? I'm not sure there's anyone on this list to be concerned about. WKU and SMU might be prone to some shady recruiting tactics, but it's hard to say how far they'll go for a guy outside the top 100 (as of now). SHU and UGA are new offers so there probably isn't a strong relationship with either school/coaching staff. Baylor and K-State haven't been in the conversation much over the past several months, so it's hard for me to believe that either of them are legit contenders anymore. FAU got mentioned twice, so maybe they have the inside track.

I think a better shooting Roosevelt Jones is the best comp. But 5 years from now, let's hope we're saying, "damn, I'm gonna miss J-Good"

Glad to find a fellow Illini who is as high on him as I am. I think I only saw tape from the IHSA finals last year, but can't believe this kid was only a JUNIOR in high school based on his bod right now. If he comes into U of I and plays "team ball"; defense, passes, no TO's and takes high % shots, the guy is going to be a pain in the backside for the rest of the league. Only onwards and upwards.
I'm pretty bad with assessing the ceiling and floors of these guys in terms of professional development. I would be happy if his teams won like Sergio's or the Draymond-era MSU teams.
His freshman year stats will be better than that. I guarantee it *Men's Warehouse voice*
I agree here. Sergio was never really quick enough or had a good enough shot for playing in the backcourt and he was never big enough for playing in the frontcourt. He battled for sure and he was strong. I think Goodwin will have more quickness, speed, athleticism, etc. Depending on your skills, you can be considered a tweener or a swiss army knife. Sergio's skill set made him a tweener in a lot of ways. A guy like a Iguodala or Draymond Green or hopefully Goodwin will have a skill set that makes them the do everything swiss army knife.
This is my guy, too. His paltry 6ppg/4reb game stats are underwhelming. But on those teams, he wasn't required to fill it up or be "the man".
I would actually hope that a '16/'17 team with veterans of Finke, JCL, Williams, etc. will not rely too heavily on any incoming freshman for a fat stat line. Just win baby!!!!!

+1 Best comparison of McClain and Goodwin, IMO. Goodwin >> McClain, with all due respect to Sergio.
Maybe it's fair to say that the Goodwin/Sergio comp is like comparing Mario in SMB3 when he gets a fire flower to the small, pre-mushroom Mario. Small Mario is still awesome because he is Mario, but when he gets a couple of power-ups it's a whole new game.
