So - As we play the waiting game with T. Frazier and J. Goodwin, I ask, which big man (both from a preference and probability standpoint) rounds out the 2017 class?

1. Theo John
2. Mayan Kiir
3. Victor Uyaelunmo
4. Justin Smith
5. Christian Negron
6. Jacob Epperson
7. Other

1A) Kiir (Williams to Louisville) or 1B) Epperson
2) John
3) Other
4) Negron

Don't have a read on Uyaelunmo. His Top 7 is coming soon, so we'll see. There's a gulf between 1 & 2. Negron: we can do better. Smith: going elsewhere.

Smith, Epperson or John..in that order

In my mind, knowing we don't have a 2018 scholarship on paper at this point you view the 6th schollie like an oversign and you get real picky. With Morgan/Thorne graduating, I don't think the last spot goes to Negron, it needs to be a true big or a very highly touted wing to move the needle.
We also have the opportunity to play in the mid season transfer market care of K. Nunn's open schollie for that "other" spot.

:thumb: - Yeah, I think that's right, but I feel like we need another banger to help out L. Black. He's prone to fouling out and after him...no one we can cound on to make rebounding a priority.

Pure speculation, of course, but it's possible Nichols could take that role.

I really think the last scholarship needs to go to a big that can match up at the five on defense; Epperson, Kiir, or Uyaelunmo. Finke and presumably Tilmon will be the only guys on the roster above 6'7". If one goes down, we'd be pretty thin up front.

Exactly. A true PF, preferably at least 6' 9". A guy who will get minutes early in his career primarily at center, the morphing to PF when Black and Finke graduate.

Agreed. We need another PF/C type. Epperson, Kiir, Uyaelunmo, John, and D. Culver fit that. Not sure Smith or Negron do (though they may be good talents.)

Hey folks. Long time lurker, first time poster. Let me preclude the following by stating that I am not an insider. I am from Evanston, IL and have some loose ties to the ETHS basketball program. My source is fairly close to Nojel Eastern, and I asked him last week where Nojel was going to school. Without hesitation, he said MSU, and that Izzo has been all over him. Again, he may not really know, but given my source's friendship with Nojel and very strong connections to the program, I'd put my money on his prediction. Carry on.

+1
We definitely are light on bigs, only Black/Finke + JT as a freshman of which neither Black or Finke is an ideal 5, so another 5 would be ideal. Less worried if he can morph into a 4/5 since we have a couple years after 2017 to fill that need. (But obviously a good thing if you can get it)

My step brother's wife teaches Nojel and we are having a family get together this week at Disney World. I'll see if she has heard anything similar floating around the halls of ETHS.

Eastern and Bowen would be a hell of a start to the 2017 class for Sparty...

Agreed. Don't need to settle on somebody just to fill the scholarship.

I have heard speculation that MSU has been slow-playing Eastern.

Certainly wouldn't have been the case pre-injury I don't think. But I guess that (potentially) shows the impact injuries can have. Still, I don't know if I believe this is the case fwiw

'17 PG Paul Scruggs to Visit IU and XAVIER next week. Followed by MSU, Illinois and UCONN. This is the only Source for Decision/Info!!https://twitter.com/Indyhoosiersbba/status/758833666122321921

Still not likely but gotta like that UI got one of the 5 visits. Would be nice if Goodwin was official before Scruggs is on campus. Even better if it was before he visited IU or Xav.

If he gets through next week without a commitment I would have to think it is game on.

It's good to be in the top five though. At least he's still thinking and considering Illinois.

Saw a tweet somewhere where his IU visit is NOT an official. It's mentioned in a Rivals thread, but can't read it all, since it costs. Can anyone confirm?

Negron isn't coming here and I agree that we need a true big or roll over the scholarship. Christian is going to be an excellent player somewhere and is a better player than several wings on the current roster.

I've seen him several times. I disagree about with your assessment of him being better than several of our wings. He is not better than JCL, Jordan, Hill, or Williams on the wing. Haven't seen enough of Nichols to compare him there. He is not a wing at the college level. Imo He is an undersized four. He's a good player, but he would not get time on the wing at Illinois over any of those players, IMO. He is not better than Williams or Pickett on the wing,, either. If we get Goodwin, he would not be as good as him, either. If he wants to play the wing, Illinois is not the place for him.
