What is to stop any kid from saying they just received an offer from (fill in the blank school)?

Schools/Coaches and refute it because you can't talk about specific recruits.

Am I missing something there?

False offers happen. Unscrupulous posse's/parents create them in order to inflate an athlete's offer list. There is no checks and balances in the process. Sad but true.

Nothing and nope. It happens.

I remember last year some kid from the south (no idea what his name was) claimed to have an Illinois offer. Everyone scrambled to figure out who the kid was, before realizing it was BS.

Should I feel good that an offer from Illinois was worth fabricating? Or feel bad that it was plausible we were actively recruiting a lower-skilled player?

I've been trying to tell myself for a while that getting Ayo was a pipe dream, but too much evidence (free articles, pay articles, users on here, social media) saying the opposite. He'll be the measuring stick for this class.

Maybe both? I think he was a big, and it came at a time when we were desperate for bigs, so it seemed somewhat plausible that we would offer an unknown.

We had 2 guys transfer out, not hard to figure that one out.

We are also had more than enough scholarships from graduation & are now sitting on a couple extra scholarships that will stay open for this year...so running anyone out at the moment doesn't make a lot of sense.

If certain players aren't buying in, it may make more sense for them to move on and have a smaller roster.

I feel at schools like Wisconsin and MSU, you need to buy in or you don't have a spot on the team, no exceptions

BU is trying to put Illinois basketball into orbit. Smith was the stage 1 rocket. Ayo is stage 2. While we can still have a good class without him, not getting him would be a psychological blow. On the other hand, if Ayo signs, the staff at mission control will be standing and cheering, like a scene in a movie.

Nice analogy. I like this. :thumb::chief:

I know I'm in the minority with this, but I am not totally enamored with Ayo. I like his ability to get to the basket, and he has good size and length for a PG, but what makes him a top 25 player? From what I've seen (which I'll admit, I've never seen him play in person), his athleticism and shooting ability don't scream top 25 to me. I know there is a lot more that go in to rankings, but that's my first impression of him. Not trying to stir the pot here-I'm genuinely curious.

Do you think Underwood cares what people on here think? But agree we move on & there is an upside that we have more room for 2018.

Of course not. Not the point.

I do think he cares about every player on the team being fully committed to a their role and transforming the roster to players he feels will fit the system ASAP.

Our previous coach never ran the offense he intended to because after 5 years, he still didn't have the personnel necessary to fully implement.

BU is going to implement his system year 1 and do what is necessary to get a roster that can handle it.

And is obviously willing to make nontrivial changes. To me, that part is almost more important than having an effective or proven system. It shows open mindedness and wanting to bring the best out in the players you have.

He was the 4th highest scoring player on the nike circuit. How a player projects to the next level is obviously important, but so is how good they are currently.

Quickness and size are a very rare combo at the pg position and he his quickness is elite.

About a week ago, Illinois offered Nate Hinton, a 6'4" SG from NC. This shows how puzzling recruiting is. The kid has one offer from a weak NC school (UNC-Charlotte; he didn't even get offers from Winthrop or Davidson which are less than 30 minutes away from his HS), and yet he has FOUR offers from BIG schools (IL, IN, MN, MD). At the same time, 247 gives him a National Comp of 288. He gets virtually no discussion on this board, like it was a toss away offer. For me, his offer shows two things: (1) there's a lot going on below the surface we don't know about; and (2) rankings don't mean a lot this time of year.
Player ratings from all services are very much lagging indicators.

On the ratings I do like the "trending up" confirmation discussed previosly. Thats why I'm more comfortable with a recruit that rises from 200+ rating to 110-120 more than a recruit that falls from 50 to 100.
Regardless of ratings, I trust BU to find the right guys and develop and integrate for his system.

Schools track Conditt

With a lack of depth at the post position in the 2018 class, schools all over the country and searching far and wide for players who can compete down low. One prospect gaining a ton of momentum is Chicago native George Conditt.

About his play during July, Conditt said, "July has been good for me. I am working hard to compete better down low, while also working on my perimeter skills. Coaches said they wanted to see how physical I could be, so I focused on that. I am just trying to improve every day.

Not playing for one of the major shoe sponsored teams, Conditt is someone that coaches typically have to go out of their way to watch, and they have been doing just that.

Bossi's Best: All-Second Live Period Team

July is all about the under-the-radar prospect trying to impress big-name coaches when he finally gets to play on the big stage. That's were Amanze Ngumezi and Zion Griffin fit in on this list.

Playing for 1Family, Ngumezi had the benefit of suiting up for a well known shoe sponsored (Adidas) team, while Griffin went out and earned his respect against the shoe company teams. A long and athletic forward, Ngumezi has hit a new level with his game to go from intriguing prospect to no brainer high major. As for Griffin, he went out to the Hardwood Classic with the Hoopers Basketball Club and put up huge numbers against shoe sponsored teams. An athletic and tough 6-foot-5 wing, Griffin, like Ngumezi, is going to get serious consideration for the post-summer 2018 Rivals150.

Thanks Mike. No one can see this without concluding THT is an elite offensive player. I like THT as much as Ayo. Ayo will create more national sizzle if we get him, but THT is perfect for BU's system. Getting both of those guys would be a dream.

Kid looks like Rayvonte Rice all over, very similar moves.
