Several of the McDonalds All-Americans are waiting to see how the rosters shake out as kids leave early to go pro. Brian Bowen just explained that he's doing precisely that.

Just another example of "recruiting is fluid".

We are not 100% out of the picture on Bowen, FYI. But it is a pretty long shot.

Class matters if you are starting from scratch and people ahead of you have left, especially at Kentucky. When the guys just one class earlier, and still in school, are the Harrison twins who are already getting playing time at UK and they were ranked #5 and #6, it is more difficult than just beating other guys in your class. Ulis definitely did not have it easy.

The Harrison's were ranked highly, but neither panned out, and only one was a PG (and even that might be a stretch). Andrew ended up being a bust. They also didn't recruit a PG the year before. Not saying it was easy (it's Kentucky), but it's a different landscape compared to their current recruiting class.

And by "not out of the picture" you simply mean he hasn't signed anywhere yet, correct? We have as much a chance as Depaul or UNLV, sorry to say.

Successfully working in the gray areas without breaking any rules is a pretty good quality in a good recruiter.

I'm as anti-mizzou as the next guy, if not more, but let's not try to pretend we wouldn't love to land 4 and 5 star recruits consistently. And if we have to push the limits of the rules without ever breaking the rules, then so be it.

I am not trying to be more moral than anyone. I agree if we toe the line with the rules we are still on the right side. If Martin stays on the right side of the line then more power to him. I just hope UI stays on the right side also. Just because someone has not been caught does not mean they are clean.
I had a troop who got a DUI. He admitted this was not the first time he drove drunk. He just finally got caught. Martin is a recruiter as his past shows. I think, and it would take quite a change of thinking, that he crosses the line. Has he been caught? No.
So, I agree with what you are saying. I could be very wrong about Martin.

Haven't seen this posted yet, apologies if it has.
Henricksen's All-State team. Dosunmu, Pickett, Mark Smith and Verge make first team. Finke, Liddell and Tilmon make 2nd team.

Pickett is the gem, Tilmon is not the savior, as many want to believe...key piece yes, savior no....

Really looking forward to Pickett in this offense with Frazier...Black will be special with his knack for rebounding and a coach that will know the right buttons to push for him to excel.

Woohoo!! I would have hated to see a legacy like DaMonte go elsewhere.

“I’m building a good relationship with Coach Underwood right now,” said Smith, who added he still talks a lot with Walker. “I like him and how his playing style is and what he thinks I can bring to the table. I feel like he’ll help me achieve my dreams. He says they have a great recruiting class and I can help get Illinois basketball back to how it was earlier with the Flying Illini.”

Great news from Damonte.

I think he has a chance to be really good in Underwood's system.

I like that BU is telling recruits he wants to recreate the Flying Illini.

I don't disagree with anything he says (get in early, build relationships and trust . . . ), but it does beg the question that others have asked here, which is "why can Coach X, brand new to the area, with no relationships get 5 star players and we cannot?"

It does seem that in addition to the very logical requirements mentioned above, there is an extra expectation of Illinois in the recruiting of Chicago that others do not labor under.

That said, we'll just have to do it the more complete and harder way.
Go Illini

This is the flaw in thinking amongst Illinois fans.

We do not have an "extra expectation." Repeat, there is no "extra expectation" for Illinois. Rather, we need to compete for players in a different way because other programs are better if you look at wins, NBA players, or location.

What the high school coaches are really saying is this:

Illinois is not a top program in terms of winning or sending players to the NBA. But, you are the local school so you have a chance. But, you're going to need to build relationships to overcome the attraction of a program that wins more, sends more players to the NBA, or is in a more attractive location.

We can debate what "relationships" means. I think it means a bit more than calls, visits, and texts.
