This is no surprise.

The only question is whether Jontay follows.

Seems like one of those instances where Jontay could maybe be drafted early 2nd round now, or come back to increase his stock. Then of course if he doesn't have a good year next year or gets hurt, he'd be facing an uphill battle. I'm not expert though, I guess we'll see.

I think you guys are talking past each other. You were saying - in aggregate, even being generous (“at best”) Kipper is mediocre. Matt is saying that Kipper at his best is not mediocre, but is actually quite good. Both are true. Kipper at his best was very good. Kipper on the whole was quite mediocre. I agree that it’s optimistic to think that light will flip on consistently for kipper next year. Let’s hope that learns how to play consistent D and rebounds and has occasional games where he goes off.

Talking past each other? That would be an IllinoisLoyalty first. :D

Sounds like the same old, same old, when it is assumed we have a bunch of freshman starters again. It seems we base evaluations on performances against high school competition vs roster performances against BIG teams. Ayo maybe as a five star and others maybe at the midway point (Trent started half the games) but if you think Griffin is going to be better than AJ at the beginning of the season you are over doused with the orange kool aide. Long term upside may be greater but it will take time. Don't believe any of the existing recruits would be better than Finke to begin the season. Hope I am wrong but is consistent with history.

Current wishlist: Jones/Hinson, Ramey/that Juco PG (strong Antigua connection), grad transfer big, Giorgi.

7 new faces next season??

If we got Caroline and Ramey I think our starting lineup would be much better than last years. Frazier-Dosunmu-Ramey-Nichols-Caroline would be fun to watch. Handling big teams would have to be overcome but boy that offense would be booming.

So if we follow the football recipe, we'll end up with a so-so recruiting class, but by the start of the season hope will spring eternal and folks will be predicting the new guys dominate and we have a top half finish and sneak into the tourney. Of course we'd then finish with an even worse record next year and all hope would be lost...but that next recruiting class we all of a sudden start pulling top-tier talent out of the blue.

Book it....all part of Whitman's master plan to tell "the greatest story" ever told!

Giddy up!

Recruiting season about to get real fun.

Lock down Jones, get one of Ramey/Feliz, get Hinson on campus, take Giorgi committment, hit the 5th year market hard for 1-2 of the 3/4/5 types, maybe take another JUCO.

We will be fine.

I just hope BU figures out how to get these players to more rapidly "figure it out". The teaching process needs process improvement. Rolling over your team has consequences. We'll see if BU can install his system with this new team better than he did this year (I am a BU fan btw...no disrespect intended).

It will help having a few of the players back to model what the system is supposed to look like, especially at point guard.

Agree with all. We should not forget that all of our assistants were new to the system as well.

No choice but to trust Underwood and the process but chances of significant improvement for next year pretty slim. We do not have one big 10 caliber big and any recruits we get this late are doubtful to be able to help next year. Hard to believe the program has fallen to this level

Man, the doomsayers are just as out there as the Kool-Aid drunks. We've had a decade of moving downhill, it wasn't ever going to change immediately. For the first time in a long time, I'm enjoying the process. I have no way of knowing if it will translate into winning, but right now it's pretty dang interesting.

The moves were made for a rebuild.. the only major piece that we lost that could have moved the needle forward was Leron. Everyone else was replaceable and wouldn't be hard to upgrade.

I agree, Leron is a big loss but I think with the right pieces added we could be a lot better next year. Hopefully a lot tougher team and one that fits the system better

I have to say I agree, though I still think Smith had/has the potential to turn into a really good college basketball player with a little work and experience.
