I think we get Alstork, and possibly Ignas if he wants to re-class. From what I have heard we can count on right now only using 1 scholly this year.

Ayo, THT and a player TBD for '18.

Maybe I missed it, but why do we think (a) Ignas might reclassify and (b) that he would pick Illinois? Has he indicated that we are high on his list of favorites?

Guess I was wrong about JT, but glad its over. till he changes his mind again. Iggy is about it for 17 if he moves up, so looks like 3 or 4 ships for 18, 4 or 5 19 be fun seeing who we can get

I think a lot of Illini fans need to slow their roll a little bit and take a breath. The way the Tilmon thing shook out suggests there was plenty of back-channeling going on, and the NCAA isn't blind to that. It also now seems like the Tilmon camp delayed their Mizzou announcement until some of that smoke had cleared. Wonder why he never took a visit after he decommitted? He knew where he was going.

At the end of the day, the NCAA may well look into this thing, but it won't be next week. It seems like these things are more easily measured in years than weeks. And if history is our guide, Cuonzo may well be gone by the time any punishment comes down.

Also, can we stop whining about this thing? This is big boy college basketball: Recruiting battles won in grey areas, Creaning players (which Mizzou also just did), these are the back-alley tactics that top programs use to be successful. I don't like it any more than the next fan, but it's par for the course these days. We either fight fire with fire, or we accept the mediocrity of the last decade. It's time to man up.

Good post, TownieMatt.

I agree. Tilmon is gone to Miznoz for whatever his reason. If he doesn't want to be here, then so be it.

Move on and grab somebody else and build this program back up. :chief:

I agree with everything except the "grey" area. If it was done like it looks obvious it was... It was well darker than grey

Meh, it's just a job to 95% of these guys, they just say the right things like any of us would. If Coach K left Duke next year and Duke said they would pay for Underwood's buyout and pay him an extra $2/mil yr, we'd be watching him up on the podium "Duke's been my dream job, it's the apex of basketball... yadda yadda".

I want my coach to care, but at this point it's not anywhere near as much as I just want him to win, we can let the students/alumni worry about caring.

+1

With few exceptions, there's only one path up the food chain in college basketball, and that's success at the lower levels. So even guys who want to be loyal have a hard time doing so because the business end of the sport doesn't support them moving up. Po-dunk U has a fraction of the money that flows from high major U. And it definitely doesn't work for guys who want to achieve at the highest levels where the salaries are ridiculous, and boosters and reputation matter.

If Underwood succeeds here, there a handful of elite schools that could try and pick him off. We're near the top, but the top 5 coaches make 4.5 mil+, can match or exceed our facilities, and have as strong or stronger booster networks. As others have said, you cross that bridge when you come to it, and hope there's some goodwill that transcends the numbers. If not, enjoy it while it lasts.

Wow, Mizzou with a pretty blatant shot at us in their Tilmon commitment graphic. State of Illinois and Missouri with a tiger image overlayed. Game on Miznoz.

Now we need to beat the holy crap out of them. Might have to go down for that one.

#$&@!! What does it take for us to land a BIG??!! You'd think 25 minutes + of playing time in power 5 team would be very enticing.

Yes... I know, have more patience.

You are assuming that he was a priority for the staff. Very little news about this guy for someone that allegedly had an offer.

Obliviously we have little interest on Toppin. Scout posted we made offer to him over a month ago. Might be waiting to see what develops.

I am holding out hope for Agau or a re-class from Ignas.

I'm hoping for both to happen, plus add 2 more 5th year guys, gives us at least 3 scollies for 18 even if Agau gets a 2nd year I think we will still have at least 3 open

Would be nice for him to re-class, but it would be very hard to get him.

At this point, a 2017 high school commit seems unlikely. From what I've read, it's unlikely that Iggy reclassifies. He's been blowing up on the AAU circuit and is in a position to be a blue chip recruit in 2018.

Except I don't expect Underwood's staff to inexplicably whiff on everything. And the 5 is not the keystone to the entire offense, like PG was for Groce's (or most other offenses, for that matter).

But yes, the thought had also occurred to me. =/

Probably true but if you were a prospect that was killing it on the big AAU stage wouldn't you wait for the spring session of AAU to finish before reclassifying? The focus completely changes the second that happens to figuring out where to go as opposed to raising your profile through play.
