The reality of the situation and the reason everyone is scared is because of what happened after 2005. We had major, major talent, and were successful. After that season our recruiting dipped and everyone knows what happend next. We have been down this road for so long all I want and I'm sure all you guys want is some consistency with recruiting and winning. All of us that bleed orange and blue have been through the proverbial ringer. We are gun shy and that is to be expected! Btw I also realize we have a different staff and time are different. Go illini!

Exactly. I love the Illini and the direction Underwood has the program heading, but the truth of the matter is that over the first three years the Illini are just a few games over .500. The glory days we lived through and remember are almost literally a lifetime ago for these recruits. When they look at Illini basketball they don’t see what we see. If this season goes like we all hope that will all start to change. Never going to get every top recruit, but sooner than later the Illini will start getting more than its share.

People really forget this perspective issue. My 18 year old stepson who goes to U of I has little enthusiasm for our sports because as long as he's been alive and old enough to pay attention, we've sucked up to last season.

don't rule out Frazier or monte coming back.....
This is it in my opinion. It’s hard to sell a guard right now that he’s going to see the floor next year. DMW and Trent are program guys, good chance they’ll be back if they have the opportunity. I’d be happy if they came back but that has got to be a hard question for us to answer to recruits.

True. Except the main difference is we had years of success leading up to that glorious run in 2005. This year we are desperate for success and terrified of returning to being irrelevant again. We all just want the consistency we had before, which is why people are starting to really get worried about not putting a good class together this year.

I’ve seen this a few times - have Frazier and Williams been asked about this and said anything, or just speculation at this point?
I can't imagine they'd even have a solid answer right now. And literally every team in America has this same speculation about every senior on their team that has seemingly been given an extra super-senior season.

I don't think this is why we're missing out on recruits, for this reason. Every team that has seniors on it has some version of this calculation going on. I mean, using the recruitment of Hopkins as an example, does anyone actually think he's going to see more minutes next year at UK than he would have here?

Also, even if both Trent and DMW come back, I don't think anyone expects Ayo and Kofi to be back next year. That's a lot of minutes someone like Tyty, or Mac, would have to opportunity to pick up. Not sure why we're striking out with pretty much every kid we target but I honestly don't think the spectre of year 5 Trent/DMW is the reason.

I agree, I don’t think it’s why we are striking out either, was just trying to think of what next year’s roster would look like if one or both of those guys were still here.

I think it 100% could be factoring into the decision of any guard or wing. Top 100 recruits want to play as freshman. That Playing time is going to be really tough to earn with Curbelo, Miller, Hutcherson, Grandison, Goode, and potentially Frazier and DMW. That's a lot of top level talent mixed with a lot of experience and if I was TyTy, I wouldn't go into that situation. 2021 Bigs however should be drooling at our situation with ample opportunities to earn playing time and a great supporting cast.

2022 guards should also be looking at us as an ideal landing spot, especially if we win a lot and Ayo moves into the first round.

Look at it this way. Creighton already has another 4-star PG committed in this class (Ryan Nembhard) and another 4-star PG from last year's class who will be a freshman this year (Rati Andronikashvili), and Shareef Mitchell, who will be a sophomore this season. Other guards on the roster include Mitch Ballock (senior whose started the last 2 years and could stay for another year like Frazier or DMW), Alex O'Connell, a transfer from Duke, and Antwann Jones, a transfer from Memphis. The only guard likely to be leaving after this year is Zegarowski and I don't think that's necessarily a lock.

Basically, I see no reason to think TyTy has a clearer path to freshman minutes at Creighton than he would of with the Illini.

Another guard I look forward to playing against with our current and upcoming recruits. Best of luck Ty Ty.

Nice job of laying out the facts. IMO this is an excuse we like to use to make ourselves feel better when we miss. Meanwhile better programs never seem to have this issue.

Fact is we missed so it’s up to the staff to find the next best guy.

Doesn't seem possible with their success over the past 10 years - but TyTy will end up being Creighton's highest rated recruit of the 24/7 & Rivals era.

Wow.

Future looks better regardless of recruits IMO. We will still have Adam, Belo, Hutch at 1-2, Grandison and Goode at 3, Cole, BBV at 4, and Giorgi, Jermaine, Lieb at 5. Like to add talent but we are not desperate at any position. Disappointed at the misses but not that worried.

Who's scared? We lost out on a great guard yesterday, but we are loaded at that position, including with guys who are freshmen. So I'm not worried. I'm more concerned about Etienne. We need a big.

That may be true. I just hear BU talk about size, length, guarding multiple positions and shooting a lot. Of course he talks about passing too. TyTy may have been able to beat out AC but I think BU Hope's our other spots going forward will consist oof guys taller than 6'2 or 3". That's why I was not shocked TyTy choose to go elsewhere. AC isnt going anywhere and I doubt we play more than two guys that arent tall in the years to come unless they really excell in other areas.
After listening to BU the transfer market will be huge as mentioned and he wants some options as needed.

I would not say were loaded at that position. These guys have to prove themselves especially the transfers. Being loaded means you have multiple guys that are either 4 or 5 star recruits. Miller and Curbelo have that potential for future stardom. The others not so much.

Fair, but then you need to apply the same logic to a guy like TyTy. We have two new guards who were rated higher than he (currently) is. We aren't threadbare at guard. Far from it.

Lest we not forget, Cardet is the real target. TyTy was really a late, late recruit starting in early August. Feliz is playing a huge role in the Cardet recruitment. Sad we lost out on Washington but he'll always be remembered as having the best left hook sucker punch in the handshake line.

Fair point as well. Great discussion.

Creighton! Really?
Whether they have done better in the last ten years or not. Illinois is the 11th most winning basketball program in history. They play in arguably the best conference in the country. The big ten has its own network. The facilities are top notch. And the alumni is active and vast. Currently ranked preseason with the Bluebloods and should be putting two players in the NBA next year. This is a huge miss no matter how you slice it. Has to be frustrating for the staff. Wish the kid the best of luck. But if you really want to be the best the competition in the big ten is a great place to showcase that. Oh well!
On to the next!

Do Feliz and Cardet know each other somehow?
