Not to hijack here, but someone explain to me why Tilmon would sign.

There is no chance whatsoever that Illinois would not take him in the spring. Barring something that would prevent him from playing college basketball anywhere (eligibility, career-ending injury, etc) he has a spot at Illinois in hand under any conceivable or inconceivable set of circumstances. We aren't going to fill up on scholarships and there's no chance he's not the best player we can get.

But if he signs, he's locked in, and cannot entertain other offers without obtaining Illinois' permission, most importantly in the not-whatsoever-unlikely scenario that John Groce, the coach with whom he has a close relationship and wants to play for, is fired. The Tilmons aren't stupid. They know Groce is on the hot seat and they know that if he is fired Illinois will ABSOLUTELY make some attempt to play hardball with that LOI.

So what does he gain by signing? Absolutely nothing, is my read on it. I have never understood why elite prospects sign in the fall. They give the schools leverage they wouldn't otherwise have for no reason.
No players should sign ever. It's of no benefit to them. Just why does an Illini recruit have to be the first to buck that trend?

Tend to agree with this. He can wait it out and see guys flip and open up spots for him at other programs, meaning that he doesn't care too much about giving Groce a chance to breathe and continue recruiting '17 (i.e. we are his fallback option).

P(JT plays for Illinois | he signs today) = 0.9
P(JT plays for Illinois | he doesn't sign today) = 0.2 ??

Need it to happen today
I wouldn't say Illinois is a backup at all, he committed in June, and he had the opportunity to go to any school in the country, and he chose Illinois.

I'm saying that if he doesn't sign today, then he is sending the message that we are a backup option. He'll gauge the market all winter and spring and always still has the option to sign with us. As it stands, we are his number 1 choice, but if the clock strikes midnight and he hasn't signed, I think that status has changed.

Of course some players should sign early -- players who might get passed over at their top choice if they don't. Doesn't apply to Tilmon.

Also anyone who knows where he wants to play and wants other players to know where he will be and just how good that class will be. Even the #1 ranked player should sign if he is that certain, imo.

As has been said quite a few times, if the school fires the coach, the school will let the player out of their LOI or suffer the PR consequences.

How could he pick Purdue over MSU or OSU?

Maybe he was at Mackie the other night. Maybe his mom wants to be close to his games -- although in that case, NW or DePaul would make more sense.
Whatever, he'll save a little face for Painter in that class if he chooses Purdue. They were missing on everybody so far.

Also, Meyer seems to confirm here that Bowen doesn't want to play with Eastern. Maybe they didn't like the way each other's game mixed this summer on Meanstreets. There was Bowen, Verge and Gilyard frenetic as all hell, and Eastern is a lot more laid back.
But Sean Miller is in to see Bowen today and Bowen is waiting until spring so -- who knows I say again? These are hs kids after all. Hard to fathom what goes on in their craniums. I know when I was that age, any grown person who expected me to act rationally on just about anything was going to be sorely disappointed.

AZ gets a Tugs CB today and it leads to an amusing exchange between MSU fans and Jerry Meyer.
(It would be kind of funny if Izzo backs off of Eastern to appease Bowen and then Tugs ends up going to AZ. Well, not to Izzo or Sparty fans, but ---)Anyway, I think this is the first time in 2 years Bowen hasn't been 100% MSU.

I'd be okay with that. It means the Illini don't have to have him in the conference, plus I recently moved to Tucson and it means I would get to watch more good basketball players.

Hope the coaches office remembered to turn the fax machine on this morning. 😄

What's the actual deadline today for NLOI submission? Is it midnight, or some arbitrary hour? And what time zone?
