Anybody else going to the Highland Shootout next month? Tilmon vs Goodwin is the nightcap. Pickett and Damonte (if healthy) are playing there too

I will more than likely be there. They have typically had some talented kids at that tournament. The first time I went Meyers and Brad Beal were there

This confuses me. Did he sign an NLI to Missouri? Does baseball even have NLIs? Assuming he signed a letter of intent in one sport, is it common to continue to recruit for another sport?

Baseball does have NLI's, so maybe he did not sign in the early period in order to see what opportunities there are in basketball.

I would think that an NLI to Miznoz for baseball would preclude him from playing baseball elsewhere, but has no effect on his ability to play basketball somewhere else. That is just a guess, however.

A guy over on the free Scout board is questioning Smith's attitude. Speaking of attitude, where is the Verge recruitment??

Jeremiah Tilmon

Would have been an awesome 2017 class... I'd definitely put that team up against any 5 seniors from the Chicago area. Outside of Justin smith, who else is there?

Chicago Senior five would probably look something like...

Evan Gilyard
Alonzo Verge
Nojel Eastern
Justin Smith
Cameron Krutwig

and you're right, I'd take the downstate crew in that matchup.

Do coaches really consult players like we think they do before accepting another kids commitment? I'm sure they talk during the recruitment making sure they think the recruit is a good kid and does he fit in and all that.

But do the coaches send out a group text like "hey, this kids is ready to commit, y'all cool with that?"

No. If he had signed an NLI for baseball at Miznoz, then he has to go to Miznoz. Since we are recruiting him, I think it's safe to say he has not signed an NLI.

No. Not unless the player in question brings up transferring. The player's don't run the show, the coaches do. Or at least that's how it was handled when I played D1 baseball.

I think it's probably more like, "So-and-so is going to commit. Here's why that's a positive for the program. Here's what it means with regard to your opportunity (position, early PT, etc.). Here's why you shouldn't be concerned (our plan for your development, etc.). Do you have questions? Are you feeling good?"

I don't think they're going, "we really want this kid, but we'll only take him if you give us the green light." That would be dumb. However, conversations along those lines are plausible before NLOIs are signed and you're recruiting two 5-star kids who play the same position. For instance, if you get a verbal from a PG ranked #12 and then another PG ranked #17 wants in, you might say to the committed kid, "here's how we envision you and so-and-so playing in the same backcourt...are you in?" If the commit says, "if you take him, I'm going to reopen my recruitment - I don't want to compete for playing time during my one year of college and I don't see both of us starting," then maybe you make a Machiavellian decision based on which player you ultimately prefer.

I think it's primarily a conversation you have with potential program-changing recruits. And after they sign on the dotted line, they have much less power: they can't bail on a whim because of concerns about roster composition.

Something to consider about guards too is that, especially for someone whos 6'4" as Smith is, if he can handle being a PG, then he can play 1-3 if needed. Thats a lot of PT opportunities. So in terms of kids already commited/on roster, it wont affect them and its a good selling point to the kid that if hes strong enough he can play the majority of positions on the floor. This is opposed to a center who probably could shift to the 4, but would be a big determent to the team. Being a "big" PG is pretty much guaranteeing you have PT if you're better than options at three different positions.

Also I think Smith said walker thought he reminded him of Rice. Which to me is music to my ears. Was probably the last fun player to watch for the Illini. Though Nunn came close at times.

That totally makes sense. You are right; you do not ask players if it'd be okay if they take a certain guy. You explain to them why and you make it sounds positive. I can definitely see this scenario happening.

Way to be level-headed here FatGreg.

Scout lists Bol Riek a 7'2"" center from Naperville as a target (2017). Never heard him mentioned. Any one know anything about him or our level of interest?

Didn't do my homework. He commuted to New Orleans on 10/20.

Eddie J. and Mark Smith -- loved that team!

What was it --- 15-0, or 16-0 to start the season?

That was their sophomore years. Started 15-0. Beat #1 Michigan State and Magic Johnson. Lost their only true point guard to injury. Finished 19-11.

Two years later, they had a really good team.

C Derek Holcomb, James Griffin
F Eddie Johnson, Bryan Leonard
F Mark Smith
G Perry Range, Craig Tucker
G Derek Harper

That was brutal going from such a high to a low. Eddie Johnson hits the baseline jumper to win and all we needed to do was a win on the weekend to be #1. Instead we lose to Ohio St....ugh. At least enjoy this brief clip.

Amazing how not having a good true PG can impact a team, eh? [enter comment about the past few Illini teams here]

Granted, the NCAA tourney only had 32 teams and the NIT only 16 that season when they started 15-0, so it was a lot tougher to get in in those days.

You are correct. That was a very good Ohio State team. Herb Williams. Kelvin Ransey. Carter Scott.

But we should have beaten them.

With Lanter out, Mark Smith actually had to run some point that year. It did not turn out well.

First Illini team I saw play in person. That was a fun team.
