We do not need to revisit the same Weber vs. Self old argument, but having the choice, I'd take a Bill Self every single time as a coach. Wake Forest sees the same type of coach in Manning, unfortunately with a lot more to do. There is no guarantee that he leaves even if he has success, but even if he does, it means that he did extremely well to the point that a KU or UNC wanted him. They'd gladly take that.

This is a thing???? Really????

There are actual people that would take Weber over Self????

Gotta love this one from the Wake Board:

"If we're "rebuilding", coming off of an NCAAT appearance and with the #11 recruiting class incoming, what the !!!! does that make Illinois?"

Let's compare:

Illinois:
Overall: 20-15 .571 W-L% SOS: 34th
2017 Class: 27th
Key Losses: F17.2 Pts, 5.1 Reb, 2.9 Ast, C 9.9 Pts, 4.5 Reb, 0.9 Ast

Wake Forest:
Overall: 19-14 .576 W-L% SOS: 26th
2017 Class: 29th
Key Losses: F19.2 Pts, 9.8 Reb, 0.5 Ast, F 8.5 Pts, 1.9 Reb, 1.1 Ast

Right now, the teams are pretty much completely even. If Illinois didn't !!!! the bed against Rutgers last season, there's literally no difference.

They do have the better 2018 class, but let's play a little here. Let's assume that Illinois gets THT, and we pick up a spring big on par with a 3-star George Conditt. That would put Illinois' class at 13th in the nation compared to 11th with Wake.

So, they're a year ahead in their rebuild, and they're not even that far ahead, if at all.
I'm embarrassed by the fact we're even attempting to compare ourselves to the WF BB program. We're #11 all-time (and #6 all time by ESPN just eight years ago).

If anything, compare to Duke and UNC. NCAA basketball did not start just 10-20 years ago. (Yes, I realize recruits only recall about 10 years of recent history, but their parents and grandparents and coaches know a lot more). Illinois has a long, rich history. Plus, we have the nearby city of Chicago with bountiful talent from which to recruit. We are NOT on par with Wake Forest!

The good news = Underwood knows/recognizes this.

Back then, not now. That was in the context of viewing UI as a terminal job, versus potentially being lured to higher programs.

That's what 10 years of losing has done. We are irrelevant right now on the national scene. Going to have to work hard to get back.....and clean up the HUGE mess left by Weber and Groce!!

Respectfully, right now we're totally on par with Wake Forest - regardless of our long, rich history or prime location. It is what it is - and the sooner people stop kidding themselves, the saner we'll all be.

I hate the term rebuild in college sports.

Ayo would be the best Chicago Public League recruit since...?

I think he'd be the best CPL recruit since Lou Henson. IIRC, Henson's last two CPL stars were Deon Thomas who was a Top 10 player nationally and Kiwane Garris who was probably in the same range as Ayo. Maybe somebody else has a better memory.

Make sure you have all kinds of time before going over there. Their recruiting thread has been almost all Ayo lately, just like ours. It has roughly twice as many posts since noon yesterday as we do. It is the first time I've seen another college BB forum that is more verbose than our own.

And know they have fired up FlightTracker!:)

This. Is. Amazing.

I love how much EMAW hates on him. Do any KState fans actually like him as the coach?

Careful. There's really only one school I worry about Underwood leaving us for, and it's K-State.

Illinois is a bigger program. A better program. A wealthier program. A better conference. Better facilities. Better tradition.

But K-State is home. It's his alma mater. And there's no telling how strong that attraction is to Underwood.

So for the time being, I wish Bruce well and hope he does well enough to keep K-State happy (and make the Underwood discussion theoretical). EMAW certainly hates Bruce, but the Scout.com board is more sympathetic it seems.

No I totally get it. It's certainly possible, though I think I am less worried than you about it.

Still, I occasionally go explore goEMAW because that board is absolutely hilarious and they are so vehemently anti-Weber and pro-Frank Martin that they've named their basketball board "The University of South Carolina basketball board".

I can't wait for when Ayo commits, then an unfortunately large section of this board anoints you as the latest insider, then you guess incorrectly on the next big recruitment, and everyone acts all surprised and runs you off... until you reregister a new username and regain your insider status and the cycle starts anew.
