This is the last thing I'll say before I take a nice long hiatus from recruiting.
Illinois has a complicated relationship with Chicago because the handlers in the city think we owe them something for keeping kids in state. If we don't offer one of their kids, they hold it against us. If we take a commitment over one of their kids, they hold it against us. If one of their kids comes here and doesn't play well, they hold it against us. Hell, even if we take their kid, they expect to have a say in who else we sign.
No other major program that recruits the city has to deal with the crap that we do (here's looking at you Iowa State), because they aren't expected to sign kids out of Chicago. These Chicago handlers have no leverage over them. If they come in for a kid, but don't bow to these handler, they simply go elsewhere. They don't have to deal with them at all. If you're Illinois, YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH THEM. And as long as that's the case, these guys have total control.
What this all means is that to recruit Chicago the way we need to, we have to prove we don't need Chicago. Prove that we can win without them. If we do, their leverage is gone. Until that happens, Chicago handlers will keep walking all over us.
