Now I'm imagining the possibility that recruits and their families aren't responding well to all the yelling Underwood does during in-home visits.

HELLO, I AM COACH BRAD UNDERWOOD AND THIS IS MY STAFF. YOU HAVE A LOVELY HOME. NOW LET ME TELL YOU WHY YOU SHOULD PLAY BASKETBALL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS.

Might be time to rethink your approach, Coach. ;)

Some people were upset we ended up with Chin Coleman instead of Lamont Evans or Chuck Martin.

But if he saves this class with Dosunmu and Horton-Tucker ...

At this point I've yet to see any evidence that THT is a realistic possibility, but nothing over until the ink dries, I suppose.

Obviously you are saying this tongue in cheek, but from all accounts, Underwood is a very nice, but also very intense person (at least in regards to his coaching style). There are probably a lot of recruits and families that are put off by that personality, but there are also going to be some that really take to it. Those that do are likely gonna be bulldogs.

So maybe we just gotta accept that our coach might not have the best recruiting personality for all recruits, but the ones that do mesh are gonna be some good competitors.

OR, and this is my actual opinion until we have more of a trend developed over multiple years, sometimes non-blue blood schools just get unlucky with recruiting. It's very possible that has happened this year and it just sucks that it happened in his 2 (1.5?) recruiting season.

I'd be happy with Ayo and Valtonen even. Honestly, that's seeming the most likely at this point (plus I'm sure there would be another late add in the spring).

I feel like, if reports out of practice are true, then the team could make a bit of a splash this year in terms of outperforming expectations and getting into the tourney. If that's the case, it would seem like Underwood would have a whole lot more to sell to any Spring signees and our shot at some meaningful "late adds" would be pretty good.

Ayo certainly isnt a done deal, the more you read the stronger Wake looks here. Just my .02

Agree, and with many services picking us to finish 11th in the B1G, those expectations shouldn't be difficult to outperform at all. I honestly expect us to finish in the Top 7 and make the tourney.

Unfortunately you might be right but nobody wants to admit it. Could still happen but in no way is it the lock some people feel it is

Tim Finke

Yea our fanbase is so funny...at one time, Finke (himself) wasn't a given, then our fanbase (figured he was not B1G caliber afterall), and now our fanbase seems to think he is a lock fallback recruit....fluidity, gotta love it!

As nice as Tempe is as a college town, ASU as a basketball school stinks. Nobody there cares about the basketball program hence why it's been a bottom of the PAC12 team since almost forever. They can't even fill half their stadium most games. Wells Fargo Arena is way outdated, also. Their basketball facilities aren't even in the same stratosphere as Illinois.

Finally, if he's used to frigid, long months of darkness in Finland, C-U is still going to feel like paradise to him. So I still like our chances... :shield:

James Harden went to ASU. We played a James Harden lead ASU team during the Maui Tourney 2007 and won.

Who, exactly, is the "fan base"?

Recruiting is like sex, try too hard and you won't be getting any. Show case your skills and you're likely to build a reputation to get more in the future.

This goes from coaches to fans. We collectively look thirsty then no love making for any of us.

Wow, just watched Valtonen. Kid would be a home run signing.

Also, and this is just speculation on my end but in regard to Underwood's recruiting style.

Underwood doesn't seem like a schmoozy type. He seems very straight forward with some southern charm and all about basketball.

His pitch to Nolley and Conditt was how he'd use and develop them within his offense; aka, basketball pitch. Not saying he didn't sell other parts of the program and University, but to me that's Underwood's strength.

How he can take a kid's game to the next level and unfortunately, there is no tape of that at Illinois.

Which is why I think the Beilein comparison's for Underwood are spot on. Great recruiters don't need success, that's correct, but we should also understand what type of coach and recruiter Underwood is.

If you build it, they will come and I also like that Underwood won't be left holding the bag on a kid. He's got plan b, c, d strategies.

For example, Valtonen. Maybe he's not a plan B guy, in fact probably a plan A, but it shows that Underwood is savvy enough to know there are other places to get quality talent.

I don't even know what I'll do to the state of Iowa if ISU basketball keeps doing to Illinois basketball the same thing that U of Iowa has been doing to Illinois football (i.e., stealing some of our best in-state players) for years.

I may just go burn the cornfields and salt the earth. Lord knows there's nothing else in that awful state to destroy.

Don't do that. Kum & Go is HQ'd in Iowa and there isn't much better than a Kum & Go Koolee!

Preface: You're post was very well written and had fantastic insight, but I need to nitpick the above.

I'd like to know the last time this board thought a recruit we watched/offered/visited/ wouldn't have been a good pick up (at least in the beginning)? I get being excited and all for these kids, but seeing as ASU is our main competition in this, I can't imagine this kid is on many radars (not saying thats always a bad thing, but it's at least moderately telling, at least until this staff has sometime to show they can develop guys).

Guess Tim Finke falls in the category, but there was plenty of love for him up until a few months ago. Or maybe I'm just being a downer.

Good point. Even if he were to transfer after one he'd have to sit out one (a la Ken Norman). If he ended up anything like Ken Norman we'd all be o.k.
