yeah, Finland is more accurately described as a Nordic country (as are all countries with the horizontal nordic flag). Proper Scandinavia refers to countries located within the Scandinavian Peninsula, which includes Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

Counties like Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands often get conflated with Scandinavia, but they are Nordic countries, disconnected from the peninsula.

That said, it is in large part, semantics.

I was ignorant to that, I thought all Norse countries fell under the Scandinavian distinction. Thanks for clearing it up. Now, bring on Valtonen!

add in Whitney who plays AAU with AYO be one heck of a class for 19

Whitney, EJ, Okoro would make for a monster class for us...that class definitely depends on this class, and our new coach and outcome of games. :thumb:

Was Markkannen highly regarded when entering U of A?

Looking for relative comparison, rank wise not necessarily skill wise.

Yes highly regarded and sought after. Unc was very upset they didn't get him. Had connection to his dad.

He was basically considered a 1 and done candidate even as a recruit, and he turned out to be just that.

Finnish is also in the Finno-Ugric family of languages. It is more closely related to Estonian and Hungarian, oddly enough.

For all the people that love the Twitter clues he's following Tyler underwood and the Illini Basketball account. No sight of ASU affiliated accounts. This clearly means everything.

Edit: nvm, also following ASU account. Curse you twitter clues

if we can snag a chicago guy and a euro kid every year sign me up. There was a lot of hype in the groce tenure if i remember correctly that we can start a pipeline with Canada, but it never panned out with I think Ennis? But wouldn't mind going hard at Canadian guys, there have been plenty in college and the NBA that have been successful. The addition of Antigua and the reputation he has all around the country, and internationally is a HUGE advantage. Land Valtonen, Ayo, and a big/THT. Win some ball games this year and show an exciting style of play, and I think the 2019 class with Okoro/Liddell plus an international/out-of-state/chicago kid is very realistic. The future is so bright with this program, and the peak is so much higher with this staff than Groce ever was. Really wish we heard more from Walker on the recruiting trail but I feel he will have a big impact with guys like Liddell and Okoro being down-state guys. I fully expect that in the 2019-2020 we bring out a top 20 team in the nation.

I almost forgot Walker was still on the staff, we've heard very little about him over the last couple months. Anyone know who his primary recruiting targets have been?

EJ is by far his main guy he is on right now, and has been for a while I think

EJ Liddell, Malik Hall and I'm pretty sure he's lead on Okoro. Probably others.

if we are able to pull kids from the South, from Chicago, and from the Euro markets

Cheers!

Every recruit is different. The more boxes you check off, though, the better your chances. If the results so far are an indicative, I'd still put us in the sleeping giant category. Underwood said it himself, that recruiting is all about relationships. We tend to look at it through a more rational lens, but it's anything but.

Imagine for a moment you're an 18 year old consensus top-100 recruit. You're going to get offers from at least a dozen schools, and interest from many more. You've got a lot of well-meaning "experts" in your ear, as well as family with their own concerns. What makes you excited about a school? Could be anything. The coaching staff has to have what you want, and it has to build trust. It's more of a craps shoot than people realize.

Winning will help. Every big win we get shows we're on the uptick. Guys going to the league are a big deal, especially guys you can point to that came from further down the rankings, where you can take more credit for their development. Returning to the tournament is desperately needed. And relationships will always trump all that. Some of this stuff will take time. When we show more, though, I believe we'll come out on top far more often.

I guess what I'm saying is this staff is all over it, and it's great that they're looking far and wide, but we need to give them credit for the process right now as much as the results. They know better than anyone that the only thing that counts is the results. We won't really care where they pull talent from, as long as they can win with it.

My 2 cents....

There were more that Groce and the Illini were in on too - the big fish was Jamal Murray. We made a strong push, but when Kentucky comes a-callin :(
