happy friday guys......just checkin in over here.....did want to say that the recent scandal has really thrown a lot of recruits/recruitments out of whack....as i eluded to earlier (i think in a different thread) the news likely impacted a recruit Michigan was also after....very very easy for schools to pitch (1) Underwood's past has some shade by extension, and (2) Underwood is a relatively unknown at this point (to recruits)

i will say....i think the ILL are in tremendous hands...most know what i/we though about Groce....he just couldn't get it all together....but Underwood can coach circles around his opponents....his product will sell itself....I'm guessing any recruiting shortcomings this year will be more than made up for once he shows out....

cheers...
Thanks for the insight, Lucky. Always welcome your opinion.

I have no idea what's going on with Nolley, but I will say that it doesn't make sense for him to commit elsewhere immediately after a de-commitment. Doing so just reeks of shady recruiting tactics. It's the reason Tilmon didn't immediately jump to Mizzou after his de-commitment from us.

Obviously this one is a little different given that Nolley was committed for all of a day, but I think the rule still applies.

We don't have a coach with a dynamic personality. Therefore, for him to truly get interest from high level recruits, he is going to have to show that he can win. I see recruiting being difficult for the next few years. We are banking on tremendous coaching ability.

I'm going to be a Debbie Downer here with rays of sunshine at the same time.

It's possible that BU may never be a good recruiter. I say possible because we don't know as he really has not established himself at a single Power 5 school for more than a year to get things rolling and to build relationships with recruits. If you look at his mentors, Frank Martin and Huggs, they haven't pulled in these star recruits other than Dozier, yet they are winning games year in and year out. We will all be disappointed if BU isn't able to consistently land big name guys, but if he is consistently winning games with guys outside the top 300 like Martin and Huggs, does it really matter?

Hopefully we land Ayo, THT, and other quality guys, but we may see a massive shift in how we win games. With our previous coach we needed highly regarded players and now we just may need our coach and players that fit his system, regardless of rankings.

No, but I think we have a shot at signing Jack Skwat

Isn't that Jack Krapps cousin ?? Might be worth the extra effort to get one in this family...... the talent is definitely in the blood !! They have another cousin Jack Schitt who will be going to 8th grade ....let's get him too !!

Finnish four-star wing Elias Valtonen just committed to Arizona State, he tells Scout

If I were a young guy from the frozen tundra of Finland, and had a choice between ILL and ASU, I think I would have made the same decision:

1. Just google Bobby Hurley's Duke accomplishments as a player at Duke. Coach K pedigree!
2. Campus aesthetics (primarily blonde and modelesque). Check out their official academic marketing video!
3. Weather/climate
4. He's too young and too far away to know anything about our rich and prestigious heritage

And to be perfectly honest, when Underwood was announced as our head coach, I (myself) scratched my head and said, "Brad who?" BU is not yet a recognizable CBB name --- and our program is in the midst of a 10-12 year draught.

The guys with whom we have a true advantage are those playing HS basketball in our home state.

Not arguing, but how come UNC recruited well despite everything that was going on over there? Because they're UNC?

Haven't really cared quite as much about the recruits to date. I think Ayo is huge though for a variety of reasons. 5 star recruit, in state, first commit, and immediate impact. I don't buy into "program changing" label because you can't assess that until after the fact. He certainly has the potential though to be one.

Every coach needs highly rated players to win

I'll do the work for you here.

Records of schools the last few years starting with the most recent and NCAA births (if applicable):
WVU: 28-9 (S16), 26-9 (1st round), 25-10 (S16), 17-16 (NIT 1st round).

Huggins' worst year was 2012-2013 where he went 13-19. In the 5 years preceding this he had 120-56 record making the tournament every year including a Final Four and Sweet 16.

-Since 2004, WVU has had a total of ten 4 star rated players, zero 5 star players, and the rest being 1-3 star players (Joe Alexander was a one star).

SC: 26-11 (Final Four), 25-9 (NIT round 2), 17-16, 14-20, 14-18. This represents Martin's entire career at SC.

Frank Martin at K state: 117-54 ( 4 NCAA with one elite 8 and NIT 2nd round).

Martins recruits at SC the last 5 years (including class of 2017): five 4 stars, one 5 star.
At K-state: two 4 star players and one 5 star player who transferred after 2 years and never scored over 8ppg.

The majority of their rosters were filled with 3 star players. Frank recruited one one MCDAA at SC and one at KSU (the 5 star that transferred) and Huggins hasn't had a single one at WVU. A lot of their 4 star players were on the fringe of being 3 star players themselves.

Again, it can be about personnel and coaching and not a star studded roster. For comparison sake, using the 247 sports ratings as used above, John Groce recruited nine 4 star players here (probably 10 had Damonte not gotten injured).

That and HUGE difference between a NCAA investigation and a FBI investigation that not only could end up with NCAA sanctions and coach firings. but also more arrests.

Appreciate the research. A comforting thought for me is imagining any of Groces illinois teams matched up against an Underwood SFA team. It'd be high 4 star recruits vs 2-3 star players. We'd have gotten smoked and everybody would be saying how underwood coached circles around Groce with inferior talent. I'm so happy that guys in our corner now

Welcome Ayo to campus. Hope he enjoys himself, and getting full attention he deserves.
Not sure if any of you really get it.

We have only one recruit we have wanted. Hopefully he has decided we are the ones. None of the others matter, if you look at the big picture. We have 3 scholarships open for 2018. Losing your minds just to fill slots is not very intelligent.

I was very surprised nobody else made big push for Ayo. I guess the bright lights that are shining, are at the SFC. If and when he chooses :illinois:, all should count there lucky stars. The staff has gone all out, they have let Ayo know we want you to build our program. This is more than just one recruit, this is a young man, his family and their future. Anything else as recruits does mean special things, but, an athlete as gifted a special as Ayo deserves the hype.

Thanks for giving :illinois: the chance Ayo, we are your home, and you are the future.:illinois::thumb:

This is by no means an excuse, but it takes a certain type of athlete to want to play for a Huggins/Martin/Underwood type coach. Their style of play is predicated on an extreme level of intensity, conditioning, and considerable basketball IQ. It’s no wonder you don’t find a lot of the elite level (and often times more coddled) athletes signing up to play for these guys. Hell, most kids in general don’t want any part of working any harder than they have to.

Ultimately BU can be very successful here in the same talent mold as Huggins and Martin.
