Every coach needs highly rated players to win
I'll do the work for you here.
Records of schools the last few years starting with the most recent and NCAA births (if applicable):
WVU: 28-9 (S16), 26-9 (1st round), 25-10 (S16), 17-16 (NIT 1st round).
Huggins' worst year was 2012-2013 where he went 13-19. In the 5 years preceding this he had 120-56 record making the tournament every year including a Final Four and Sweet 16.
-Since 2004, WVU has had a total of ten 4 star rated players, zero 5 star players, and the rest being 1-3 star players (Joe Alexander was a one star).
SC: 26-11 (Final Four), 25-9 (NIT round 2), 17-16, 14-20, 14-18. This represents Martin's entire career at SC.
Frank Martin at K state: 117-54 ( 4 NCAA with one elite 8 and NIT 2nd round).
Martins recruits at SC the last 5 years (including class of 2017): five 4 stars, one 5 star.
At K-state: two 4 star players and one 5 star player who transferred after 2 years and never scored over 8ppg.
The majority of their rosters were filled with 3 star players. Frank recruited one one MCDAA at SC and one at KSU (the 5 star that transferred) and Huggins hasn't had a single one at WVU. A lot of their 4 star players were on the fringe of being 3 star players themselves.
Again, it can be about personnel and coaching and not a star studded roster. For comparison sake, using the 247 sports ratings as used above, John Groce recruited nine 4 star players here (probably 10 had Damonte not gotten injured).
