Heck they draw almost 5000/game for baseball. Drew, if about 9000/game is compelling to you, come and check out what 13,000/game is like, with over 15,000 when things are rolling.

That last part is the problem -- "when things are rolling".

There's no indication that things will be rolling at Illinois anytime soon. Picked #13 out of 14 in conference to start this season, and while the year after promises to be much better, the national perception about Illinois is that we're a "meh" program with no real buzz.

Not that aTm is Kentucky or Duke, but 2 Sweet Sixteens in 3 years is quite a contrast to a program that hasn't even danced for 5. And it's closer to home. Frankly, if any of us were in his shoes, it would be hard to pick a school like Illinois over Texas A&M. Hope I'm wrong.

Try to spend a day in College Station & you will see that Champaign-Urbana is like the Garden of Eden compared to that place!

The thing is, the likeability of a given college town probably doesn't figure very prominently in most of these kids' decision-making. There's hardly anything in State College, PA or Auburn, AL, and towns like Tuscaloosa, Norman, and Gainesville are far less attractive than some of the other bigger college cities. But those schools have zero problems attracting recruits.

Texas A&M is hardly an elite hoops program like those schools listed above are football programs, but the close-to-home factor is a powerful one. A lot of kids are willing to stay closer to home at a less-than-fabulous town than go far away to a more enjoyable town.

Truer words were never uttered.

I don't necessarily disagree with the core point you are making, but this part of it rings incredibly hollow. State College is pretty barren. Auburn is smaller than CU but comparable. Tuscaloosa is almost like a southern copy of CU. Gainesville is larger than CU with generally more to do. Norman is in a major metropolitan area and is night and day different than CU.

So while I agree that the surrounding towns are likely a small factor in recruits' college choices, your choice of towns doesn't really support your argument.

Coach Underwood certainly deserves more time to turn things around but so far this year's recruiting looks like a lost year. Unless some unlikely things happen in the next few days we will have missed out on every player we highly coveted and spent time recruiting. Illinois will put a positive spin on it but we will now be going after lower level recruits and players that most of the power 5 teams passed on. While saying that the Illini have a great chance to change the direction of the program by playing well on the court this year and exceeding what are largely low expectations. Nothing will help recruiting more then some big wins and putting fans in the seats and creating excitement again at the State Farm Center.

Real estate = location, location, location: Recruiting = winning, winning, winning. I will not judge BU’s ability to recruit too harshly, when he is trying to sell an apartment rental to people who can afford to live in Oak Park. Yes, I believe our brand is that diminished, and I hope this year raises us to condo level.

I still have eligibility. Fifty year-old, six-foot nothing guard with growth plates closed, mediocre mid-range and no handles. I think that I saw Chin at my adult league pickup a couple weeks back, so I'm hoping to soon get an offer.

I'm usually fairly optimistic, but this stinks. We may as well just sign our 300th ranked/juco recruits now and move on.

It would make a lot more sense for Timme to go to Gonzaga than it would Illinois. I know if I'm in his shoes, that is probably what I would do.

Winning is not a pre-requisite for new coaching staffs to recruit well, it helps, no doubt, but this board is turning winning into one mighty strong crutch, or justification for this staffs inability to sign their targets. And now come the emotions over QG and DT not coming here, fortunes to those who knew a while ago they weren’t.

Sure works for all the Illinois athletes.

I knew Guerrier wasn't coming, but I thought I'd have at least another week of feeling optimistic about Timme.

The only thing I go by is my heart, can’t wait for this fall recruiting tide to change!
