Far more concerning is Curbelo and his waiting to sign until the Spring. This is the last year of Antigua's 3 year contract and he is only making in the low $300's. He was used to the $900's as HC at USF. My guess is no Antigua and there is no Curbelo.

It doesn't seem far more concerning since there is zero indication that he'll wait until spring.

Boy I hope you're right. I would feel better if he just publicly commits and then signs on November 13th. Certainly, a lot of smoke or O&B Kool Aid in that direction.

Very confident.

Don’t have a crystal ball on Antigua, and I understand a HC gig could be a possibility for him again soon, but with how close he is with the Curbelo family I could see him sticking around at least a couple more years. Jmo

Considering how bad he was at South Florida, would any school that could match or exceed his current salary be interested in him? Some guys like Antigua are just more cut out to be career assistant coaches.

Yeah, that’s valid. With him being a very charismatic dude and solid recruiter you never know. Certainly fits the mold of assistant very well but an AD somewhere could be intrigued

At a minimum, it seems like if he’s going to come back, it will require a raise. He may not be competitive for HC gigs right now, but he’s definitely going to get interest from other schools.

There is no way a coach is sticking around as an assistant, assuming they have head coach aspirations, just so they can coach a kid. If he was that close to the family, the kid would go wherever the coach went.

The day to day stress/workload/burden is so much less for an assistant. Having done both assistant and head coaching, I can matter of factly say I'd rather be an assistant under most circumstances. You get to do what you want to do (coach) without worrying about all the other b.s. and politics that accompany the profession. Of course the whole money thing is always a factor though.

I believe that. I'm just saying that perhaps Miller won't believe it until he sees a real movement of Ayo up the draft boards. Despite some comments, Ayo is not a consensus first rounder at this time. Many have him there, but others don't.

First five hits on my draft search had him taken 7th, 9th, 19th, 29th, & 33rd. So one site had him just outside of first round, 2 in the lottery, 1 within spitting distance. His draft stock is quite good already, and we know he wants to go. Staying seems like a long shot as of today.

The real question is would we have room for Ayo with our crowded guard situation should he decide to stay. /ssssssssssss

Perhaps an AD at a school that Curbelo would have zero interest in attending.

Kid wants to play at a big program... the argument is moot

Been saying it would be November for Miller for a while.

Some people still seem to think that he will head out to Arizona State. Not going to happen.

Miller and Curbelo are both coming to Illinois. Both will sign in the fall. :shield:

You sweet talker you! Please be right , please be right!

I really hope we can hang on to Antigua. If you were to tell me the current state of recruiting for Illini basketball 4 years ago I would be ecstatic. Let's pay this guy, he's the real deal.

What is the going rate for a top assistant these days? Only thing I could find was 2 years ago and looks like about $375,000 a year would put you close to the top 10. I believe it had Payne at KY listed as high making about $800k.

Definitely think they need to retain OA. His work with the bigs as well as recruiting makes him vital to get back to where we want to be and sustain that. If he leaves for a head coaching gig not much we can do, but would be a big blow to see him leave for another assistant position. Thoughts on what it would take to retain him?

Sure hope you're right. Back in Sept. I posted that I had a good feeling about Curbelo and predicted a class of him, Miller and then either Ruzentsev, Hawkins or someone not on the radar. Might just come out looking like a recruiting soothsayer. But more importantly, crazy excited for the near-term future of Illinois basketball.
