J Smith to Indiana can give Wilkes cover though not to attend the in-state school. They ate out of scholarships and the WF is full.

you guys can hate him all you want but hes been successful at 1.) Recruiting (even if you dont like his style) 2.) putting good teams together.

ate out: ha ha

But seriously, Wilkes doesn't need cover. And Clappy will happily oversign to land Wilkes. But Wilkes will probably see major minutes at PF at IU, at least freshman year.

As we're getting closer to a decision, I sense that our chances are getting better.

No 247 CBs yet for us for Wilkes, but I did notice he grew to 6'8" this week. Growth plates still active.

He is not as good as IU fans think he is but definitely not as bad as Ilini fans make him out to be. It seems Crean has turned the corner, and IU are now getting the recruits they could not get early on during the drought year. Two B1G titles and 3 S16 appearances in the last 5 years is not something to laugh at.

I don't really "hate" anyone, but I don't like him because he's the coach of Indiana.

On the subject of Wilkes, I, too, am cautiously optimistic. He has a few more visits to take, but he has an opportunity to be the focal point of the team while also having some help around him. Groce has been upfront with him the whole time and laid out a plan for him. My perception of things is generally seen through orange tinted glasses, but I think the honest, nice guy approach used by Groce could benefit us.

I guess don't pay attention to his clappy mannerisms, but I have enjoyed watching many of his teams style of play, despite hating IU. Their pace is excellent, spacing excellent, shooting and athletes have been pretty darn good as well. I don't watch enough IU to see his situational coaching, but as basketball coach and fan, his base offense philosohy is both effective and fun to watch.

Also, we'll all get a good look at his ability to adjust this year without Ferrell.

Don't be shocked if Eastern is Michigan State's second commitment in the class of 2017.

To add on to this

Everyone thought Groce came into dumpster fire? Remember what Clappy can't into........ Hiroshima!

Clappy also came at a time when Indiana high school has produced a ton of talent. Much has gone elsewhere but still plenty.
According to Crean, his high school coach referred to him as his "biggest tool". I would guess most still feel he has earned that recognition.

Not really that bad. They didn't get any penalties out of that whole ordeal. They got a few years probation from the NCAA IIRC. It was really just a matter of bringing in the players that he wanted. And when he walked in, it wasn't like the roster was bereft of talent- it was just that they were completely all new guys and so many freshmen. The big obstacles facing him were any NCAA sanctions and the reputation hit to the school. The sanctions never came and he just went about coaching and recruiting and looking like Tom Arnold with the Indiana brand and fan/alum support solidly behind him. Indiana was never irrelevant.
Criticism of his relative lack of success is fair. He saved himself a little last year with a good season but the 2 years prior to that, they lost 15 and 14 games and missed the tournament one year. That is tough for Indiana people to take.

When Crean walked in IU was not bereft of talent? C'mon, all talent was completely gone, either to the NBA (Gordon, DJ White) and the rest forced to leave the program for multiple (justifiable) disciplinary reasons. The IU program was a complete mess, the definition of bereft (of talent), they could barely fill scholarships. Even Weber made his infamous statement about IU (which was totally inappropriate IMO).

Both Indiana and Iowa were hurting for talent during a period. I credit Groce for not allowing Illinois to get to those depths. He brought in a couple of quality transfers (Rice, Ekey, McCarren?, Thorne, Starks) and missed on others (Paul, Crosby).

Crean had that #1 team that didn't have post-season success, I agree recently his teams have been pretty explosive and talented. He was able to get out of state talent to fill the voids when in-state talent went elsewhere. But I think Indiana has had a talent renaissance the last 6-10 years. Talented kids from the cities (Indianapolis, NW Indiana) to go along the players from the rural areas.

Hate to bring it back up, but SLU folks are saying Tilmon to SLU is adone deal. Talked to one of their fairly good boosters lat night and he brought it up. Says that a SLU coach had told him a week ago. Sid that jg is pissed at Tilmon for going back to estl. Also says they have no shot with Ramey, but that they are in good with Gordon and Watson. I laughed about Gordon and he says they are very confident. Keep in mind he also Sid if Justin Tatum had known Ford was going to be the coach that he would have gone to SLU over duke.

SLU fans are drunk on Goodwin and have let their imaginations run away from them.
