I like optimism. Unfortunately we see this with so many recruits. We reach the stage of hopefulness in a recruitment where we have a "puncher's chance". Of course there is at least some chance- he's visited, the staff is spending time on the recruitment, he narrowed his favorites to include Illinois. It will turn out however he chooses. Sadly, a puncher's chance is also a chance for a nut punch.

A nut-puncher's chance?

More than a puncher's chance, IMO. Maybe a whole lot more. Take off your cup at your peril.

Currently would over-sign by one w/ Smith. Bryant and Anunoby may go pro after this year. Davis/Blackmon also could look to move on.

Hartman may have torn his ACL. Mucks up the Hosers scholly situation even more for next year if true.

Scholarship situations don't matter much (and this is doubly so with Crean) when dealing with a prospect at Wilkes' level.

All coaches recruit as if rides will open up (because they virtually always do). You can't wait until the schollie actually does open up to start recruiting. At that point, it's likely too late.

No way Clappy won't make room for Wilkes.

If Wilkes commits, JGood did us an enormous favor (in hindsight, obviously). Not that he was looking to do us a solid, but very ironic if it comes to fruition.

Some parallels between Wilkes' & JCL's recruitments: excellent students, strong family guidance, relatively quiet recruitments. Think Groce is the strong leader in the sincerity department. Really thinking we have more than a puncher's chance here.

Plus both were offered by Clappy prior to their freshman year in HS. Plus both families know each other real well!!

I don't mind swinging for the fences on Wilkes. We pursued our top SF/WF instate and he decided to go elsewhere (as did our secondary) but still landed a top talent in Pickett. We have talent at that position so missing out on Wilkes doesn't set us back like it did when we swung for the fences on 5 star PG and passed on 4 star players with no depth at PG.

Also we have a outstanding product to sell to Wilkes who could walk into a great situation. Like how the Wilkes family has handled his recruitment.

Any word on how Epperson enjoyed his visit ?

Since it was an unofficial, there usually isn't much info since the coaches can't pull out all the stops of an official visit. Usually just a tour of campus, talk of academics and the coach telling him how he would fit in.

Regarding Wilkes and Smith, there was discussion on this board as to whether Wilkes would want to join iu if they took another SF. The discussion centered not on Wilkes being "afraid" of competion, but rather seeing this as having to play more PF than he would have preferred to play.

Of course crean would take him, but would Wilkes want to commit?

I am hopeful Wilkes says no, based on the keeping it real comments.

We have more wings than IU would, so I don't think this really matters.

I think this is what it all boils down to as well, does Wilkes believe he will play sf or be asked to play pf . JG is able to sell Black and Finke as PF here I think adding Kiir on or soon after his vist can only help with Wilkes

Australian four-star Epperson turning heads
Eric Bossi | National Analyst

Epperson also knows he can fall back on advice from his father, Ken Epperson. The elder Epperson is the all-time leading scorer and rebounder at Toledo (who has offered Jacob).

"He told me to take my time with it. He said he didn't get as much attention as I have because they didn't have social media and all of that. He just wants me to do it on my time and try to cram it in and talk to everyone."

Fresh on the scene and new to the twists and turns of recruiting, Epperson is in no rush to decide and he'll use the winter to sort things out and adjust to all of the attention that has come his way.

"I'm definitely going to need until the spring to decide. I just got all of this interest two or three months ago and I don't want to decide too early. It's a lot to take in during such a short period of time."

Don't think we can afford to wait on Epperson. Nice as he might be we don't have the luxury. I hope some other C prospect pops on our offer long before he gets things figured out. I'm not sure where we stand on Kiir's list but but I hope we are up in the top 3. Waiting until the spring for Epperson might be what lands him a blue blood type offer.

If Kiir wants in, the ride is his, IMO. I agree, we're not going to wait. Bird in the hand...

IU will likely have a returning starter at the three. Illinois is selling Wilkes on moving into Hill's open spot.

As far as I know, there are really only four active names for us in 2017. Kiir, Epperson, Wilkes, and Kigab. We may not even have a choice but to wait. Hoping for better luck than that tho.

All, I promise I come here in peace.

Just want to touch up a bit on Kris Wilkes.

I've seen a few posts suggesting Illinois may get him and they are in prime position. While I certainly applaud John for the work he has done behind the scenes and openly (especially in regards to staying in the ear of Kris' personal instructor) I think that the enthusiasm should be tempered a bit.

Wilkes' high school coach has said privately he's fairly certain that Wilkes will go to Indiana and even his own father suggested a quite a bit of surprise about UCLA being a finalist.

As most have correctly said, no lineup or returning starters will have any bearing on Wilkes' decision. When you are that good, you go to a school and you play. End of story.

Having had the chance to see Smith and Wilkes multiple times, I can say, categorically, that they will be playing together and not competing for time. Smith is a guy the IU staff can slowly bring along whereas Wilkes will walk in and start at the "3" right away.

I am here to talk Illinois basketball. I'm a big fan of John and really hoping he turns the corner this coming season and desperately hoping everyone stays healthy.

I come here to help shed some light on some of the recruiting stuff that I know about.

Sorry you feel that way Tornado. I think you can understand I am referencing that they are two very different players who play two separate positions.

No?
