Conditt is apparently announcing on October 2nd, Nolley on the 31st. We very well could/should have two by the November signing period.

Bottom line is Groce got some pretty decent talent to C-U. He just couldn't do anything with that decent talent.

This. We'd have Tilmon if Groce stayed, and might have landed Mark Smith as well. JFG was good at building relationships, less so at Xs & Os. I am impatient to see what BU can do.

The "talent" he got at PG was awful. That's the one position you can't afford to miss on year after year.

Right. Plenty of talent and no one who can dribble makes basketball hard.

Ok we have 3 spots for 18,most are in agreement that we will have 4 open . With who all we really seem to be pushing hard for, and now a secret euro guy starting to be talked about. I wonder if BU doesn't feel like we will have 5 open spots. My thought behind this is because I feel most here believe the same spot would open for that 4th spot, where I tend to think it would be one of the 5th year SR who might decide to leave heck maybe both would. I guess my point to all this is just, I will be very happy if we land any 3 of the guys we seem to really be hot after right now, If we get 4 of them I will be stoked, but what if we end up with 5 ? who knows what is going to play out over the next couple months, But sure seems to be a lot more fun watching and trying to figure this staff out then what we have had to deal with for the last 10 years. the only thing we have figure out about this staff so far is, no one has a clue who all they really want or how bad they want guys. and that's pretty fun watching

There's still a chance Tilmon would get released from his LOI, its happened multiple times this offseason alone. Imagine the fan base if TIlmon requests out while Groce is still our head coach and we miss on MS/MA along with a JCL departure.

I know that was absolutely worst case scenario, but its not even that farfetched. There is no way we would've been better of with Groce.

Maybe missing your point but Groce brought in Rice and McLaurin in his first year.

fair enough, I was referring to empty freshman class & throwing transfers in a differnt bucket. Trying to add to Calvin's comment that Underwood did a lot for such a late start. Which is fairness Weber didn't have the table set for much for Groce to begin with; but in contrast Underwood held onto Frazier/Damonte (lost Tilmon/Pickett) & then went out and got Smith, Ebo, & Matic. Rice was probably coming either way...Alstork/McLaurin a wash.

Tilmon wasn't coming, he showed immaturity throughout the process. BU said he wasn't going to beg for him to stay because he didn't want to be toyed with. Like the two bigs we have.

1. Who is this secret euro guy, I haven't heard anything. I guess that is why it is a secret. :gossip:

2. I am relatively sure that you can only over-sign by 1 player, so if there were 5, which I don't think will happen, one would have to wait until Spring.

I didn't think the over signing mattered till spring, I thought that's when we had to only be over by 1 in case something happened during the summer

I completely understand the optimism about the new staff, truly a home run group. BUT, we have ZERO commitments, ZERO!!!!!

Fall signing not for a while, many high end targets interested, crystal balls, yada yada, bottom line is we have NOTHING for 2018; no other FACTS to state.

It is more likely at this point the class underwhelmes than not; certainly could change, but as of today, it is what it is! Enough of the "It will work out" because BU and the boys are bad !!!. Until it comes together, be demanding!

Uhhhhh, ummmmm, okay?

Since when do we need facts to be optimistic and positive around here??? :thumb:

And the Fall signing period is 7 weeks away. For you that may be 'a while' but for me that's just right around the corner. And besides that, we can get verbals at any time. And once that happens try and jump on here and tell everyone not to get excited or optimistic.

Oh yeah, I forgot to put in a bunch of these!!!! And just cuz I have to have more than you, here's a few more !!!!!:D

Stay thirsty my friend!

There are other FACTS to state. We have offers out to an outstanding group of talented players. Many of those players have already narrowed down their list of suitors and Illinois is very much in the hunt.

While I would prefer it if a couple of those players had already give us a verbal commitment, there is no need to be too concerned at this point. We have a number of weeks before anybody needs to hit the panic button.

I gotta admit, keeping Groce on the theory that his recruiting was finally picking up steam, and then losing Tilmon would have been truly ugly. I think he would have kept Tilmon and JCL, but boy keeping Groce and still losing both would have been unbearable.

And just to be clear, I am not contending we'd have been better off with Groce. I am only defending his recruiting chops. He took the time to create some real relationships, I think. Without results, that is not enough.

Theory: BU is chasing 6-8 players he WANTS and has a good shot at. If he gets less than 3 of them, he's content to wait until Spring rather than lower his standards. That tells me he has confidence that the Illinois MBB brand will be more marketable in six months than it is today. I know I think it will.

Good argument. Actually, though, one can argue that Eboigbodin was in a different class than the players currently being recruited. Some times necessity overrides other considerations and his recruitment reflects that need. Fortunately, we don't appear to be in a situation requiring we take anyone this fall. Of course, we'll be better off if we can get any of the top 8 guys being recruited. What happens, though, if we whiff on all of them? Would you take Finke if available? I'd argue yes.

Totally agree on Ebo (though reports have been promising), but completely different situation being late Spring, massive depth issue with big men, and no opportunity to improve the team's marketability before the class closed.

Nah, too many other better-fits on the scholarship grid that BU could wait on to commit.
