It appears we are much more likely to end up with 6’9” guys that can stretch the floor than Kofi types. Playing with 2 fours and no five is not uncommon and would seem to fit with the BU style. Seems to work in most conferences but the BIG has seemed to attract very large post guys. OSU did fine last year without it.
Underwood historically goes for more stretch types at the 5 than players like Kofi, but when you can add a player of his caliber you have to adjust how your system works.

I understand what you are saying, but none of those guys were Scheyer, and none of them had the Duke brand behind them.
But what really separates Scheyer, from say Collins? Besides Chris’ dad was a great coach also?

Maybe he’ll do well, but none of the other guys have.

and for the, “it’s Duke so they’ll be good no matter what crowd”, I’m sure that’s what everyone thought after Wooden at UCLA and you know they thought that to the east after knight.

What separates him is that he is at Duke. He's go a head start compared to all of the other Coach K seedlings that have tried and mostly flopped. Like you point out with UCLA, it's not a guarantee, but it does give him a better chance than, say, Quin Snyder had (though he's certainly found success later).

WHAT'S THE LATEST ON CAM WHITMORE?

Easily one of the hottest prospects in the class of 2022, Cam Whitmore rose from all the way outside the top 100 to near five-star status in our most recent update to the rankings for his class.

A 6-foot-6 powerhouse of an athlete with a relentless competitive spirit, Whitmore is officially down to a final 10 of Florida, Georgetown, Illinois, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State and Villanova. During June he was able to see Georgetown, Maryland, Penn State and Villanova. At a minimum Illinois, Miami and North Carolina should be getting official visits from him after the summer ends.

The one thing that everybody I have spoken with can agree upon is that Whitmore and his family are pretty straightforward people and that his recruitment is one without many outside or complicating influences.

My assessment is that it is just to early to declare a leader. I wish I had more, but there just hasn't been much intel leaking about where Whitmore could end up.

Just not very many Kofi like prospects out there either. Showing all types of big men prospects we can adjust our system to allow them to maximize their skills will be key.

How many Kofi types has Illinois ever had.....0 in my book.
Kofi put in the work to get leaner and coach planned accordingly, helpfully Kofi is Not a plodder. Maybe we saw it before anyone else. I think Kofi is a sponge and will play in the league. And we probably won't see another like him....In my lifetime.

Sencire Harris seems like a great teammate. He's always posting pro Illinois stuff on social media and engaging with fans. Definitely a guy who might win the fans over early.

**This is a very small sample size. There's way more - including him posting a picture of Chester Frazier and dubbing him his favorite Illini**

I hate Duke, my wife is a big fan. Coach K can not be replaced. I can even see that. You can still go to Duke but it won't be the same without him. They will not be able to maintain their same level of excellence.

I for one hope the Duke brand somewhat leaves with Coach K.....Probably not, but I cant see them recruiting quite as well without him....Am I wrong?
I figure they have a 2-3 year grace period to figure out what they are without them before the Duke mystique takes a hit. Old timers will remember, but recruits will want the latest thing.

100% very few similar types in the NCAA as a whole recently either. Pruit would be our closest but obviously not in the same stratosphere. My point being was all of our recent success has been tied to having that kind of presence in the middle for offense/defense. Showing that we can adjust and still be successful without a generational center talent will be key for future success and big man recruiting. I'm confident(knock on wood) that we'll be able to do that.
