BU is absolutely about winning a National Championship at Illinois and that's what they're telling recruits.
I wrote the “don’t have to win a NC at Illinois” thing tongue in cheek. Of course BU is about winning a NC and is selling that to recruits — as well as development I’m sure. Thankfully talent is starting to listen.

All due respect you may be right but I think being a part of building something at Illinois would be more appealing than getting on the bandwagon at Duke and our alumni base and real fans not bandwagon fans dwarfs theirs
There is no loyalty with most Illinois high school players with the state. Michigan/Ohio St./Indiana the kids have it. Thats what makes it almost impossible to get into Kentucky/Ohio/North Carolina for kids. At least the ones that are 4/5 stars!

Why would there by "loyalty"? What are they being loyal to? That they happen to live within the state boundaries? It's a ridiculous notion.

That said, there are still some kids who want to stay close to home.

This is a chicken or an egg issue. Those kids are hard to grab b/c they have successful, prestigious schools in their states. In our lifetime tOSU won a natty with IN and NC players, UVA one with NC and IN, Nova with IL and OH players. All 3 of those programs were also bad at some point near those championships and had to earn their ability (with Ws) to sell themselves.

I think UI's current philosophy of going anywhere to identify talent and selling to (but not relying on) IL talent is the way you have to win until IL becomes an elite program again.

The last year UNC got the #1 player from the State of North Carolina? 2014. That includes missing on Brandon Ingram, Dennis Smith, Devan Dotson, Patrick Williams, Isaiah Todd (went pro), and Bam Adebayo. Ohio State has done much better but still only three times since 2014. UK hasn't snagged one but their state rarely has someone worth prioritizing (for them).

No state gives much loyalty to their in-state school. We just complain about the State of Illinois because their our state. The priority is and should be on national recruiting.

Loyalty is not quite the right term.

But there is something said about going to your local school to play.

It is not a ridiculous notion at all

Watch the Video from this weekend. Jake Fiegen 2023 from New Trier His first shot is half court. Makes it and walks away like he makes that shot all the time!? Tell me what you think....

I love this site and am immensely grateful for everyone on it I mean no disrespect to anyone but I don’t and can’t believe I’m the only out there that sees what a sleeping giant this university’s basketball program is

ugh, so wrong. There's been a parade of elite Indiana preps leaving their state for decades, even when Knight was running the show. This notion of state loyalty is a tilting at windmills exercise. Kids choose programs. Obviously, great recruiters help. But it's hella easier to sell a kid on a Porsche-level program than a Chevy. Not rocket science.

Underwood is moving the program in the right direction, at a VG clip. One more thing: at the end of the day, who cares where the kids are from? I'm gonna pull just as hard for out of state kids as Illinois preps.

That kind of rationality just isn't going to fly around here. We need more players from IL.

I believe all of our players should come from Illinois. Preferably within a 30min radius of Champaign.

That's simply not going to be realistic in this day and age. Too many hands in the Chicago pot and simply not enough talent downstate to be an elite national program. Not gonna get them all in state so combing the rest of the country and the world is what needs to happen. Luckily BU and Co are already doing that.
