Based upon his most recent press conference, I think BU made it pretty clear that he only hires ACs he can trust and lean on in every aspect of their job. My personal read is that the idea of hiring an AC to land a single player is offensive to BU. When he hires an AC, he is hiring them to recruit multiple players, develop them, and set them up for success in game-time situations. I think BU is pretty well-rounded as a coach so he demands that from his ACs as well. The feel on this board is that Bergeron fails to check many of the necessary boxes for serious consideration.

That make sense.. I guess I was looking more small picture. Which would be why I don't make $3 mil a year to make these decisions :hailtotheorange:

Honestly, I think it's a good question. If he knew we were a single piece away from a nearly sure-fire Final Four appearance, would BU be willing to compromise some of his deepest values as a HC? My read is no (for better or worse). I think BU strongly believes there is a right way of doing things, and doing things that way is the best way of sustaining long-term success.

So, yeah, not expecting to see Tre Mitchell don the O&B next year.

Not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with anything you have above. I, personally, would not hire Bergeron. But.....in that same vain.......what are your thoughts on Nick Irvin? Would you hire him at UI? Does he warrant a position at UI based on his abilities as a coach?

If Nick wants to help break down film, prepare game plans, and run clinics as a special assistant, I would be fine with it. I see that as a kind of apprenticeship towards becoming an AC somewhere, and it keeps all of our AC slots open for more experienced candidates.

Appreciate it. A very fair answer.

My only concern.....how would Nick's presence in Champaign go over with the folks at Meanstreets and the Wolves. Maybe we don't care....and we are hitching ourselves solely to MIF. Or, maybe since he wouldn't be a full Asst, we think it wouldn't be a big deal to those programs. I wonder.

Joe Henricksen had interesting comments on Storr. He doesn’t see him as a can’t miss high major guy. He believes there are too many holes in his game, but I don’t recall him specifying what those were. Surprising with all his recent offers. My only point is he may be more replaceable than we thought.

I read that and thought the opposite - maybe the “holes” are enough to keep the blue bloods away. I love what I see and think we can coach most of the rest.

I hope your description of Underwood is accurate. I like people who have a blueprint and won’t sacrifice the process for the short term. I believe this translates into long term success.

Hamilton wants no part of Bergeron on his staff. Just like BU, Wade, and Beard.

Tre is a good player, but Bergeron is acting like he's bringing Emoni Bates or Cade Cunningham. A couple of coaches on Tre's list would laugh at Bergeron if he even asked for an AC spot.

“The damage we could do” is a pretty good way to phrase it when you look at it from the other side.

It is the sort of “ethical” decision that opens up discussions with other recruits for years to come. “You gave Tre’s guy a job, why can’t you buy my mum a house/me a car?” The locker room dynamic of such a public display of favor to one recruit over others.

What if Tre doesn’t fit well with our roster and doesn’t perform as expected? Or possibly worse what if he excels and is gone after just 1 season? Then you’re stuck with a coach on your staff who you may not fully trust, who might not be the best guy for the team, and who may not have any connections or ability to land you another recruit after Tre.

If AJ Storr decommitted after an AC left, it’s a clear sign that our recruits value the entire coaching staff, and not just Underwood when deciding if they want to play at Illinois.

Depends on the extent of his connections and if it would help us land multiple top 100 players over the next 3-4 years. If he’s just good for 1 recruit (even a Top 30 caliber guy) it’s not worth it.
