I take it you speak from a position of experience having been a collegiate athlete?

Also, tell me why Joe Sophomore is able to start a t-shirt business and sell t-shirts while in school but Giorgi has to end his collegiate athletics career to be able to do the exact same thing? What's the difference?
That’s a different take.

Getting paid by the school is different than being able to earn money outside the school. Soon the Giorgi example will be allowed.

(sorry illininutt, love your posts and wish you a speedy recovery!)
Maybe let’s stop using the get off my lawn gif every time we don’t like someone expressing a view that many others have. It’s effing insulting. If y’all want to talk for endless pages about NIL, maybe create a thread for it instead of clogging up the recruiting thread.

I come on here to find out about recruiting....what I get is arguments about players getting paid. I want names/how many stars/if Kentucky is their dream school and if they are a banger. Loyalty should start a new column FOR SOME PEOPLE called: WHO CARES! People can then take their "players get paid" talk there. I'm 72 and just had triple by-pass...I don't have time to read about who gets paid what! I want names/how many stars......

With all due respect, it wasn't what he said, but the way he said it. HE was the one who "insulted" those expressing a view about NIL's. I actually think his actual idea about starting a new thread for NIL's (albeit, not calling it "WHO CARES") was a pretty good one.

I couldn't think of a more grossly inaccurate analogy. A kid spends years developing his skills, most of them are playing both in high school and hitting the road for the AAU circuit, and you say it's a luck? And you want the millions/billions they generate from their work and effort, none of that should go to them, but instead to the beauracrats who run the sport? I have a hard time understanding how someone thinks they're entitled to distributing money that way. The free market certainly disagrees.
There seems to be no shortage of supply of athletes willing to take the deal; play sports get a free education, personal training, etc.

Plus if they don’t play professionally, the experience gained in college athletics is very translatable to the professional world. If I see a resume from someone that played college sports, they immediately stand out. The discipline, time management, grit, etc. required to be in school plus play sports it a great skill set.

Free education?

College cheerleaders, since they are not sanctioned by the NCAA, can monetize their Instagram accounts and make 6 figures from it without penalty while still competing and attending school.

NCAA athletes who have done that have been penalized with ineligibility or forced to quit their sport.

It's an antiquated, unfair system. It won't be simple, but change is needed.

If this 'adult' is of the ability to make money off of his/her likeness out HS, then no law stopping them from heading to a different country to make that money. I mean, they are adults after all

So your position is that the US doesn't need or want young individuals with talents that could warrant large paychecks based on the revenue they contribute to generating?

A curious position.

I'm guessing it's going to go quiet on here for a few hours while everybody is out searching for Instagram accounts (or in my case, trying to figure out what Instagram is.)

A student who receives a full academic scholarship to U of I can still work on the side as an intern or even full-time employee without losing his/her scholarship or opportunity to attend school. Why would an athlete not have the option to also earn money while on scholarship?
No matter what rules the NCAA applies...athletic departments and boosters will find a way to work around those rules to gain an advantage
Back in the 60's Dick Butkus probably had a job guarding Memorial Stadium for $10 bucks an hour...the going rate. However...UCLA got Lew Alcindor a job that any student could have had....film editor at probably $500-$1000 an hour....the going rate in Hollywood. Advantage-UCLA.

These figures may be off but it's what my aging memory recalls.

Many of us here suffer the insufferable guy without resorting to personal attacks.

Yes it should. It should be either or IMO. Does the science major get to keep all the money he or she makes on important discoveries they make while in college? No they don’t. They pay they own way and the school still gets the bulk of the profits so why are athletes supposed to be treated so different?

That's not at all how research works, but okay.

If a scientific researcher at a university makes a patentable discovery or invention, they actually often do get a substantial portion of the IP rights. Many spin it out into small companies and the students involved often get a stake in that, too. Oh, and those students aren't paying their own way, either. They're generally covered by research assistantships via grant money.
