St John’s is a team that’s usually hardly relevant to Illinois, so I’ll take it. I wish AJ well and hope we never play him.

I think he wanted to play with Kofi, saw this headline, and thought he transferred:

I just now realized you guys are not the same person.

Interesting.... almost like he didn't get the offers he was hoping for. Seems like he had a pretty quiet summer after a fairly strong spring
Not sure what offers he was hoping for, but according to 24/7 timeline prior to decommitting from Illinois his offers were Iona, Chicago St., Austin Peay, IUPUI, Va Tech and Ole Miss. After he picked up offers from LSU, OK, OK St, South Carolina, Iowa, ASU, GCU, Miami, Kansas and St. John’s. So if his goal was to get offers from schools that stacked up better to Illinois in order to make an informed decision rather than just taking best offer that he had, goal achieved. According to TwitterVerse, it sounds like Illini cooled on him (have no idea if true), and if that is only because of decommit possibly he wishes he hadn’t. But I can’t really fault him for wanting to explore other options that weren’t there initially. Wish him the best of luck.

I think the decommit was real soon after Orlando/chin left. After the big spring, assumed he was hoping Kentucky would get interested (probably just like any other kid), and with the asst coach connection. But just speculation on my part.

Mac Irvin Fire key for Illini in 2023 (JJ got offered ny North Carolina this week)
Woodcocked again! Disagree with the premise of this article. FWIW, I wouldn't be surprised if our '23 class contains no MIF players. And I'd be very surprised if that class isn't very good.

I agree with this. Brad talks about the culture they have built. I would doubt that they didn't do their homework before offering and then taking Bass.

As far as I am concerned, Bass is an Illini until he isn't and I would guess the coaching staff feels the same. I can't see them running the young man off. What I can see is him seeing them recruit over him and he decides to leave for potentially more playing time. But that is true of every player on our roster.
A team with a strong culture can also withstand a player or two that might not meet the normal mold of the person they want.

Question though whether the juice is worth the squeeze. Borderline 5 star probably worth the gamble. I don’t know if there are questions about his attitude per se but seems like Casey is in the “maybe” category despite still being too 50ish. Bass is a 3/4 star borderline top 100 at a position where we have 3 incoming frosh plus another 2022 commit (Harris). Not sure you take a chance on a kid of that skill level given where our program is at.
