I don't know if you realize this, but we, as message board fans, have no say in whether a player is recruited and ultimately signed. I know that's a tough concept, but we definitely do not have a vote in the process. So your complaint is baseless. We aren't running him away.

What we as message board fans are very well positioned to do is wildly speculate and discuss ad nauseum, especially when gossip is involved. Hence, the Bass discussion.
People have feelings. Most people have a hard time disconnecting them from their decisions. Teenagers often have more of an issue with this than adults. If a recruit reads this board, negative posts may have an effect. If you are debating between two teams, and one board is all gushing "we want this guy", and the other is "nah, I'd rather have X", or "this kid is 2nd priority", which way would this push the decision?

  1. Remember when we recruited Giorgi Bezhanishvili? He was ranked in the high 300s and there was a lot of consternation. It didn't seem to hamper his decision to come here, join the team, make a name for himself, and eventually get invited to an NBA summer roster against all odds.
  2. No one here is taking unreasonable potshots at the kid. They're discussing a rumor that the staff cooled on him because he was recruited by the former staff and/or because he has some attitude issues. It's not like anyone is being malicious here.
  3. I doubt recruits spend much time keeping up to date on the message boards for the schools recruiting them. There is anecdotal evidence that they are aware of and perhaps occasionally look anonymously once they are on the team, but doing this for multiple boards for multiple schools recruiting you seems like a stretch. We are not as important as we sometimes like to think.
  4. If a recruit is basing their decision based on what the message board fans are saying as opposed to what the coaching staffs are saying and where they can thrive on the boards, I don't really want that recruit anyway. If the school is the right fit but the loco internet fans aren't believers, come prove them wrong. (This line of reasoning has limits. Actual online abuse should be off limits and absolutely a dealbreaker. This here is not abuse; it's discussion.)

5. A more athletic Larry Bird.

But is it Bassless?

I’ll show myself out.

They also probably count how many of each team's fans like their Instagram and Twitter posts.

Addendum: if a fan board is overtly racist or hateful, maybe, MAYBE, it could have an impact. Outside of that, if a kid is so bothered by what is said about him by a bunch of idiots on a message board (me included), that kid is so soft it has to be the love child of Mark Smith and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Evidently you have not been paying attention to all of the aau events that this young man has played in this summer,he consistently put up 20 plus each game. This young man has clearly outperformed his ranking. I believe you are the one with the screwed up mindset calling this young man scraps. We have won a few games now it has gone to your head!!! How many 5 star players did Baylor have ?

So you've personally talked with Underwood about who he prefers? Unless you're running all over the country seeing AAU games, how do you know who's better? Unless Underwood is posting on here and telling us what is going on with recruiting, I'm not going to get too excited about what is posted about certain players.
Umm... So why exactly are you here then?? :)

Have we all dismissed the idea that Kofi was never leaving? That it was all a PR hype stunt?
He would have definitely left for the NBA if he had heard what he wanted. But once he announced he was withdrawing from the draft, I think it was pretty sure he would come back to Illinois and there was certainly some PR hype ramping up at that point.

Although it's a little surprising to me we haven't seen a big NIL announcement of some kind by now.

Yikes. Your post will probably be deleted but Underwood has changed everything including our expectations. I like Bass and Harris but honestly, I think we can do better. Getting Ayo, Miller, Belo and Kofi showed that through and through and that’s what we should expect. Frazier getting Epps is the caliber of recruiting and player I want.
I don't understand why you lumped Harris in here, unless you believe him to be overrated by recruiting services, and am not sure what expectation-setting Underwood has done to warrant the opinion that "we can do better." Guy is a consensus top 100 recruit and is almost exactly in line with the 3 freshmen that joined the team this year. Going solely by rankings, Epps is a recruit of our caliber at top 70, but Harris is not at top 100?? We've had a total of 4 consensus top 50 recruits across (essentially) 4 recruiting classes for Underwood. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Some interesting comments here…
Why didn’t go after Kofi harder?
Backed off Kofi to go after Duran?
Bates Memphis lean apparently.
College football is more fun when Miami is cheating and college basketball is more fun when Memphis is cheating.

I don't think it's going to happen, but an expanded Big 12 with Memphis, Cincinnati and Houston would be a heck of a fun basketball league to watch.

I believe he wanted to talk to Antigua and get his advice. Entering the transfer portal eliminates the issue of tampering. Then he hyped it up for exposure. Just my opinion.

Their academics are nowhere near good enough for admission to the Big Ten.
