Transferring is light years different. Really can't compare.
Agree. Back then you'd never have Plummer in the portal, and you'd never have Miller in the portal. We'll be fine. I'm not fretting. Just saying don't expect we'll get a replacement for Kofi in the portal. Just my opinion, but I think it's far more likely Payne starts after Kofi leaves and we use the portal as a stopgap for depth.

Don't forget though we'd have multiple successful years to show to recruits! They will see that they are coming to a powerhouse and continuing a legacy that was revamped by Ayo and Kofi and others like Damonte and Trent! And continuing with Curbelo and other stars waiting to show off this year!

Florida State has consecutive years of top 5 picks and posters here say Hamilton had nothing to do with it when Corhen commits but we’re supposed to use a second round pick and a guy who was forced to come back because he couldn’t be selected at all as a recruiting tool. Time to look in the mirror where we are at (which I personally am thrilled about by the way).

A hallmark of VG (and better) teams is having at least a couple of Swiss Army knife, complementary players that are flat out ballers. It appears that Rodgers is that, big time.

Thing that stood out to me is he can pass and is a basketball player. However, not sure how good the competition is he’s playing against, so not sure how good a basketball player he is. I don’t know what Garza looked like at this age, but other than seeming to lack quickness, I see very little comparison between the two them. Wouldn’t be a bad project (looks more advanced to me than Lieb did), but I’d be a little worried if they don’t bring in another big too — either from HS or portal.

The very first thing I noticed was his court vision / passing. If Chester is willing to offer, I am more than willing to watch him play for the Illini.

Surprised that there isn't more being discussed about this visit. I know he is a '23, but he would be a great way to start the next class!
If fans thought there's a a decent chance he'll pull the trigger, then, yes, there'd be a lot more excitement. Plus, his visit coincides with two senior visits.

Updated 247 rankings this morning. Epps 60, Harris 98.

Of note: Casey down to 112. Woof. Got a feeling he will end up at DePaul.
Also of note:
Epps down 4 to 60
Harris down 10 to 98
Ty Rodgers up 2 to 63
Oweh up 26 to 76
Whitemore up 6 to 21
Huff up 5 to 88
Casey down 59 to 112

Maybe in wrong but I think the excitement should start now to see how special Illini nation is. Starts the recruitment off right in the kids eyes!

Joel I usually agree with a lot of what you say and maybe we kinda do on this one. I really feel like DMW was a hard working athletic person playing basketball, and feel Rogers is a basketball player with the game figured out and is athletic tho not unbelievable athleticism.

DMW was a beast (as a HS senior), then he wrecked his knee. I think that really hindered him, especially with respect to his confidence offensively. Rodgers seems to have a very similar dawg factor and that's really compelling.

Mike Shaw 2.0
I’d like to pause here and just acknowledge what an improvement we have had in recruiting compared to 6-7 years ago. No longer are we identifying a highly ranked in prospect as an underclasssman and holding our breaths, hoping he is the white knight who will finally turn the program around. And then, either falling into despair when he inevitably goes elsewhere or if he drops precipitously in the rankings, talking ourselves into how he can still be the savior.

I feel like the program is in great hands right now and both our floor and our ceiling have been raised significantly. Staff IDs kids who fit culturally and skills wise and land a fair number of them. Maybe every class doesn’t have an Ayo or Kofi, but we continue to stack classes with top 100 talent, and, especially recently, lengthy shooters. No matter who we wind up getting I think we will be fine, it’s just a matter of how fine. Pretty refreshing!
