How much milage can Underwood get using a second round draft choice as his signature recruit? If he signs Taylor and JJ becomes a one and done and a lottery pick, then Underwood has something to crow about. And Gill's career has been over before most of today's high school players began following the NBA. Tim Anderson's work at Ground Zero is more pertinent to today's high school recruits than Gill's NBA career.
It's less where Ayo fell in the draft and more his brand across the state. Guys know who he is and he has credibility. If he can continue to be a key member on an NBA rotation, no one cares where he was drafted. It becomes "how was he developed?" Draymond Green was drafted 35th in the second round. I'm sure MSU drops his name a good amount

Also regardless of Gill's NBA career being over, he's a basketball analyst. Him talking about the Illini on tv is great. He's plugged in with the basketball community in Chicago. You need people like that

Griffith's mom decided where her son was going to play.
I think they were talking about Rashard Griffith, but maybe his mom helped him decide where to play also. Maybe my sarcasm meter isn't working though.

Being a Cousy award winner as top point guard might carry a little weight though.

I think he knew this. Just prior to that time, Sonny Cox really was the strongest influence on his players. The Griffith recruitment was definitely not controlled by Sonny Cox.

Gill is an TV analyst for the Bulls and he talks about Illinois frequently. That definitely helps us. And every kid within 200 miles of Chicago knows Ayo played for Illinois. That helps us also. Sure if you sign a one-and-done high draft pick, that help too.

Yes, of course your assistant coach's connections are extremely important. But you take whatever help you can get.

Illini are in strong recruiting position in B10. Michigan and Ohio State are only real competitors and they cannot sign everybody. MSU and Purdue play ugly ball (thank goodness Weber is gone). Wisconsin has huge team chemistry problem. Iowa was the Luke Garza show. Indiana may be better but Woodson was not a home run hire. Duke UNC are trending down. Kentucky had bad year - the fact they are stealing coaches from Illinois shows how far they have fallen. Self was badly hurt by Addidas scandal. The new rock star coaches seem to be Chris Beard at TX, Nate Oates at Alabama, Mark Few at Gonzaga and Jay Wright at Villanova. We can go head to head with these guys!

MSU has been to two final-fours in the last 6 years, too early to say we have passed them just because they have an off year when they were without an adequate point guard. Hope we can beat them for Rogers!!

Calillini

Now appearing in Tampa
I don't recall Miles Leonard but I do wonder how Myers Leonard would have looked playing for this coaching staff.
Interesting observation by Nuke.

Myers averaged 8 minutes and 2 points per games as a freshman, then goes number 11 in the draft after his sophomore year. Ayo averaged 32 mpg and 13,8 ppg as a freshman, but was drafted number 38 after his junior year.

Without delving into mitigating circumstances, it seems that based on subsequent NBA draft position, Myers was under utilized his freshman year

On the other hand, based on Ayo’s recent interview, Underwood and his staff seems to have more properly developed Ayo.
