I think, for most, it’s less about his performance last year, which was inconsistent to say the least, and more about his potential over the next few years based on his height and athleticism.

Will that potential be realized? Hard to say. But I hope so.

He is certainly better than average but the does not make him very athletic. NBA guys that are 6'10" and can move laterally, are very fast, have awesome hand eye coordination and can jump out of the gym are very athletic. Honestly that's one reason the B10 as a whole has struggled at times. Elite bigs that athletic have played elsewhere. He is a good athlete much like Brian Cook with out the shooting ability thus far. Hawk can't create his own shot just yet like NBA athletes can. He is a good athlete and can be a very effective college player.
My very simple comparison....he's a very intent hard working colt growing into a Horse!

Just while we are talking about Coleman... I don't know when this actually happened, but I noticed this week that he has officially hit the big-time... Google suggests him before the jazz legend.

I saw Harper play at Illinois. He was the fastest player with the ball I’d ever seen.
Harper was fast and quick....great player and one of my favorites. But I saw John Wall play in high school and even then he was at another level. Playing against some of the best teams in the nation at the Bass Pro TOC, he got to the rim virtually any and every time he wanted...with the ball....and finished if he did not get clobbered. I've not seen another comparable player anywhere over 65 yrs. as a hoops fan. Not a good jump shooter then....not sure now.

His flashes are nuts. It's not just oops and offensive rebounds, it's the occasional brilliant pass, the game with four 3s, the blocked shots, and his ability to move laterally at his size defensively (watch what he did to Murray and RHJ in the Iowa and Rutgers games earlier this season, it was remarkable).

I don't know that he's going to put it all together and do everything consistently (still think he'd need to put a bit of weight on too), but if he does, he can be legit incredible, IMO.
Hawk will put it all together when he wants to....which will require him to work harder and practice shooting skills longer than 99% of college players in the land. Few are willing or even understand that and think they are working hard. Don't know if he understands and is willing....but I hope so. He has improved his defensive skills a bit and fouled less in March, but that can also improve. He needs to play for this team to win.

I’m sorry to inform you but Google and Meta know that you are an Illini fan.
Lol, Google definitely knows that but searched on incognito mode in an attempt to get an unbiased search result... but maybe no one likes jazz in my city, I dunno.

Okay, follow up: odds that Segu commits to the Beloved? 50%? 25%? 70%?
I'd like to have him, but he's listed at 6-0 so he's probably under six feet. So what about defense? Also, I think he's a senior so we'd only have him for one year. I'd take that, though. The good thing about his highlight videos is they're actual game sequences, where people are actually playing defense.

Just think it would be great to have the experience, particularly early in the season while Skyy and Epps are getting acclimated. Don’t need him more than a year, maybe just a couple of months as I hope our frosh will surpass him. Depends on what other choices we have but like our wings with a year of practice experience more than no experience at the point.

Andres Feliz was also listed at 6'0" and I would love to create a clone army Andres Felizs (Felizes? Felizi?) and have one on all Illini teams for the rest of eternity

His defense (Segu) does grade out pretty poorly though, and he's a slight 6' (listed at 160, though guessing that's old -- for reference Plummer is listed at 182 and Feliz at 195).
