The crazy thing is I watched BBV make 3 straight 3s in his first ever game here. That was 3 years ago at this point, and we haven't seen anything since that makes me believe he can shoot, but I still hesitate to view him as a low post only big.
Agree. My recollection is that BBV had more of an outside game that an inside game when he first got to Champaign.

BBV next season > Omar this past season

To be honest I though BBV this past season > Omar this past season.

Hard for Omar to be impactful when he couldn't stay on the floor. Verdonk gives a much more rounded game with obviously less athleticism than Omar. And I remember watching the guy in warmups his freshman year and he was a 3 point machine. He's gotten bigger/stronger since then, but you'd have to think that shooting stroke is still in there.

Hot take, but Hawkins has NBA potential written all over him and could be a first team All-Big Ten guy even next year if he makes a big offseason jump. As you said, it’s all up to him; his build and raw talent is there.
Two things he has to do:
Improve three point shot
Realize that he's either taller or quicker than 90% of the dudes guarding him. Either rise up, post up, or blow by.

I'm not expecting a Johnny Davis like jump but I am kind of expecting something like 13 and 7.

Pre-ACL tear, but true dynamic 3 level scorer. If you want to see Skyy videos, I've never seen a recruit with more vids out there.

The thing I like, given that he isn’t that tall is his solid build in the legs and hips to withstand physicality. AC struggled with the blatant hip checks and would spend too much time telling the unsympathetic refs.

Kofi, Dain, CoHawk, Goode, RJ, Ty, Podz, Harris, Epps, Skyy.
That’s 10 deep…(with an assumption we get Skyy and Kofi stays).
Still have BBV and Lieb on the roster.
That’s 12 of the 13…..
We know that TSJ is a high priority. That’s 13.
That can only occur if Grandi and/or Hutch do not return.

The 3 incoming aren’t likely to re-open their recruiting.
All this talk about bringing in another big…..to fill whose scholly?
With the current “likelihood” of whose staying and who’s already committed, we have perhaps one spot after Skyy.
Brad also isn’t playing 11, 12, or 13 deep next year.
These guys aren’t entering the portal to be number 11, 12, or 13 on the depth chart.

I for one will be thrilled to have this top 11 Kofi, Dain, CoHawk, Goode, RJ, Ty, Podz, Harris, Epps, Sky and TSJ.
Truthfully, I think it’s a BT Championship caliber team with a shot at a long run in the tourney.

minor quibble: a legit shot

Agreed. Any time you can't play your top 3 players at the same time it's not great roster management. In my opinion obviously.
When you recruit two players at same position two classes apart — the older a high 3 star and the younger a mid to low 3* — and two years after the latter arrived they turn out to be 2 of your top 3 players, that has little to do with roster management and plenty to do with player assessment and development.

If this is how the roster shakes out; I’d expect us to lose more to the portal. Just not enough playing time to go around.

kinda like coleman hawkins?
Coleman Hawkins attempted 60 3 pg shots in 2022 or ~ 2 per game. He hit on 28%.

Roger Powell shot 39% from 3 his senior year (only 1.3 attempts per game)
Jack Ingram shot 39% from 3 his senior year (only 0.6 attempts per game).
DaMonte shot 33% from three in 2022, 55 % in 2021
Grandison shot 42% and 41% from 3

It's definitely one area he needs to improve on. These days, you need a 4 that is a solid outside shooter.

Yeah....as a sophomore. What's your point?

I like the potential of the roster next season, but I wonder about less experienced guard play. Maybe by the end of the year, they’ll have it.

I like Hawk, but don’t see him first team All-BIG next year. If he sticks around the next year, he could make an All-BIG team of some sort. Hope I’m wrong and am rooting for him. Now RJ on the other hand.

I think the need for Hawkins to vastly improve his outside shot is a bit over-blown. Houston was daring him to shoot, but he was on the court with DMW, Kofi, and Curbelo quite a bit in that game. None of those dudes wanted to shoot. If he is out there with some combination of RJ, Goode, Podz, TSJ, & freshman PG to be named the ball will find a shooter before the defense can recover from the Kofi double/triple team.

That said, if he wants to get to the NBA the three is absolutely imperative. I think he can be an effective player at this level w/o making a huge leap outside.

That’s the point though.. IF Kofi returns, then Dainja will be the backup and BBV would be the 3rd big. Why would we try to push out BBV and try and get someone else to be the 3rd big? There is no way a non-limited player will transfer here to be a 3rd big. So why push out BBV?
Thank you

Really like what Segu could bring to this team next year. I don't think he would put up big numbers but I think he's the answer at PG for allowing the growing pains at PG to be minimized. 2.2 A:TO ratio and 38% from 3.
