I don't think Podz leaving is a big deal. Wish him well but he was never going to do much at Illinois. Illinois can now sign a veteran point guard that will allow Clark and Epps to develop a bit.
If we add a couple guards from the Portal, it's not a big deal. If we're unable to get anyone (which seems unlikely given the number of players in the portal), it's a big deal.

Also, at this point, saying he was never going to do much at Illinois is ridiculous. He may have developed into a decent player. He's a good shooter and that is a nice skill.

Plus, he had to go against our starters everyday in practice. Had to make him better even if not getting playing time.

Boy, if TSJ is out because he knows Kofi is out, THAT will be a really tough momentum swing….
Why is everyone keep saying TSJ is out? Did I miss something? (So many post threads and pages these days)

Did someone mention him as a reclass to 2023 possibility?
I heard it, too. If Skyy truly wants to play with ZZ in college and he only plans to play two years, then reclass to 2023 has to happen.

How different is it really compared to coaches hopping from one job to another? Heck even comparing it job hopping for the rest of us. Most people do it because they are unhappy in their current situation or want to be compensated more fairly. How is that different than kids leaving because of not liking coaches (management/coworkers/job duties) or wanting more playing time (money/benefits). I’d argue it’s actually healthier to challenge authority/norms and move on if your ideologies don’t match up, rather than sticking around and putting up with crap.

I’d say a freer market for college athletes to transfer sets them up better for the real world rather than being chained to a school. It’s a tale as old as time—older generations bucking change from younger ones because of some antiquated philosophies. Just because they are young adults shouldn’t mean they don’t get the same privileges as their coaches and peers in the real world.

Oh and it’s not like players aren’t committed to staying at a school that doesn’t give them major minutes. College athletes are going to be just fine.
It’s massively different. Do 40% of coaches walk away from their jobs every year with no penalties? If someone is job hopping every year, the employer is not the problem.

The transfer rules are here to stay but false equivalencies don’t support the argument for or against.

TL;DR: Someone commented that he'd be very surprised if TSJ came to Illinois. Multiple insiders "liked" that comment and haven't said anything since to explain why they liked it, despite many people asking them.
Well, I'd be very surprised if TSJ didn't come to Illinois.

Now just need the insiders to like this post and then...

FWIW regarding Shannon, I asked around and a couple Kentucky fans believe they are in the lead for Shannon. One cited that he believes admissions is holding Illinois and Michigan back, but I was under the belief that admissions won’t likely be an issue for Illinois. The other cited that since Sharpe is leaving, Shannon would be guaranteed playing time. I can certainly believe that Kentucky may be the favorite right now but my doubt from their perspective is that they are bringing in Chris Livingston and and Cason Wallace, 2 top 10 prospects who are a SF/SG and SG respectively. To sum up, Kentucky may or may not be in the lead for Shannon at the moment, his recruitment has been pretty quiet so far.

Freedom is a good thing. It was a long time coming to the college ball world. But it’s here and everyone will benefit in the long run.

Given the many players that will enter The Portal each year for various reasons after their freshman year and later... it’s time to ask a question: How do these guys real feel in the privacy of their own thoughts about their first year (or years) at the 'old' school? Probably get as many answers as there are players, but here are a few ideas...

1. ‘It was a mistake for me to choose (fill in the blank). I should have gone to (fill in the blank). It would have been better for me.”

2. ‘I’m glad I went to (fill in the blank). I got to learn from the coaches and my teammates and that will help me now as I begin my new career at (fill in the blank).

3. ‘That coach at (fill in the blank) just didn’t appreciate me. I should have gotten way more minutes. He made a big mistake.’

4. ‘That coach at (fill in the blank) taught me something. I didn’t show him enough. I’m gonna use that as motivation at (fill in the blank) and become a better player.’

5. 'I'm not sure if I'm making the right move but I've got to try something else. I wish I were more confident about this.'

6. 'I'm not sure if I'm making the right move but I've got to try something else. I have faith in myself to succeed anywhere.'

I hope the exit interview process is an extensive one for both player and coaching staff. Both sides will benefit going forward if everyone gets a better understanding of the dynamics of our new Transfer Portal Era ball experience. If we look deeper into this, we can learn a lot and make the system and the game itself better for everyone involved including the fans of the game.

Thanks a lot for repeating. TSJ is somebody nice to have but we could probably find a replacement from the portal if he changes his mind.

I’d prefer the staff to focus on and invest in CH’s development, given the high praise on his ceiling. The kid was a risk to leave. Loyalty is a two way street.
We must have depth. Players get hurt which is so very clear after this season. We need more that one player at the 4 spot with some size to defend and rebound, and hopefully shoot the three ball around at least 33 percent. Players need to understand that good quality teams need to have depth with skills mentioned about to play the 4 especially with Kofi on the floor we need a 4 that can shoot and do all those things. Coleman did shoot it a better last season towards the end of the year but still must improve on his 29percent overall. If Jake leaves we need a stretch 4 and hopefully with more size that Jake because he is more if a 3 to me.

I'm not trying to say he *can't* start. I'm saying I think Coleman Hawkins will be better than Ben Vander Plas next season and will start if they're on the same roster.

Agreed competition can be a good thing. Coleman definitely struggled at times, but he was also our best non-Kofi player down the stretch last year, IMO.

Either way, I don’t see the downside in having 2 stretch 4 options, especially now that Podz opened another scholarship spot (assuming we get a solid guard out of the portal). We’ve essentially had 0 consistently reliable stretch 4 options the past 3 seasons with Damonte, Coleman (finding his footing at the end) and Jake awkwardly guarding opposing teams’ 4’s. I for one wouldn’t mind having interchangeable options at the 4 when we face the EJ Liddells and Keegan Murrays of the world.

I agree with this. In reality DMW and Jake played out of position when at the 4. Coleman was trending in the right direction towards the later part of the year and needs to continue to do so to be called a stretch 4. If Goode keeps getting stronger he could be ok in that role against smaller teams It would be great to have Hawk or a portal transfer start and shoot it around 38 percent or better. With some hard work from Hawk even if he improves 6 percent over last year like he did the year prior and got to 35 percent that could have a massive impact for him, Kofi, and really space the floor with our incoming shooters.

Nah, the insiders have not said anything concrete but they have made several posts that indicate the rumor has legs. They have not said whether we are totally out of it or if it's just a muddier outlook now than it was before, but it was enough that we've been able to determine we do not seem to be in the driver's seat any longer.

Muddier....That is a good word.

I'm sorry for him that he had so much going on in his personal life (don't wish that upon anybody, particularly a young college kid), but it's always a red flag when a player sits or leaves a team and the team goes on to play much better basketball.
I think that's completely unfair. Carolina had a new head coach, mostly new coaching staff and six new players. At the beginning of the season, I was shocked at how bad they were, especially with Manek. As the season progressed, their play lived up to the talent. I think they just needed time to gel.
