That just isn't the case ... Payne wasn't ahead of Dainja and likely BBV.

Agree. I really liked Payne and his potential. He had a few unbelievable blocks, most notably on Mulchahy and McGowens, but ultimately I don’t think he was a fit for what he needed from that position. We need someone who can body up other bigs, rebound, and rotate to be in the right position at the right time. If we had a freak athlete like Payne who could do all of that, we would really have something.

For better or worse, his instincts just seem to be to hunt blocks, which frequently left him out of position resulting in a lack of rebounding and racking up fouls. I don’t think it was necessarily selfishness…if you are that elite at something your tendency is going to be to want to do it as much as possible, particularly with the speed of a basketball game where you generally don’t have time to think. Although nowhere near Payne athletically, BBV seemed to understand our principles much better and was more often than not in the right place at the right time.

I don’t know anything about Jacksonville but I hope their system plays more to Paynes Strengths and he can be a free safety type help defender. But I’m going to take it a a good sign on Dainja that Payne didn’t see a great opportunity here. I wish him well.

I’ll be shocked is Kofi does not return to Illinois.

He will break records next year and solidify himself as possibly the greatest to ever play for the Illini.
I would've agreed three weeks ago. But I read an article recently where he was quoted as saying he didn't care if he went un-drafted and his coach was coaching to win games, not prepare him for the NBA. It also talked about the NIL helping make him more comfortable. But it sounded like a guy wanting to try and make it to the bigs.

How many different movies have a shot of Denzel saying "Boom!" or do that same kind of dramatic moment? He MUST know that he's all kinds of memes, and especially useful on sports message boards, right? I'd expect that by now, the "Boom" moment would be written into every movie he's in, sort of like the pithy one-liner was written into all Ahnold movies.

I'd love for Kofi to return and I know we'd be a great team with him, but I also have hope that we can still have a great team without him. I love everything this staff is doing from roster construction, recruiting, transfers, etc.

I really don’t care at this time what Kofi does. I’m pretty sure BU and Staff are fully prepared to act if he decides to enter the Draft and I’m sure it will be a good addition.

Did I miss this article with those quotes?

“I don’t care if I go un-drafted,” Cockburn said. “I know when I get my opportunity I am going to show people that I belong there. Ayo went out and he did it and people realize now that he was really a lottery pick. I have that spirit, I’m a real hard worker, I’m focused, I’m dedicated at the end of the day that is going to pay off, it’s gonna show.”

“My coach (Brad Underwood) is not coaching me in college basketball to send me to the next level, he is coaching me to win basketball games here,” Cockburn said. “In the future I will have the opportunity to show people what I am capable of doing– that I am capable of playing at the next level.”

What would be the benefit for Kofi to transfer at this point to another school and not enter NBA Draft?
The NIL money is very nice at U of I right now so why would he go anywhere other then Illinois if he stays for another year in CBB?
My pure guess is that it costs nothing for other schools to throw around ridiculous NIL numbers, with no accountability to back them up. If another team can convince Kofi to enter the transfer portal again, they've already accomplished their goal of weakening next year's Illinois team. All it takes is for one person to suggest to Kofi (or one of his people) that Illinois is lowballing him (you're a two-time all-american, on the shortlist for NPOY again, you're worth so much more than what they've offered you), and the trap is set. Before he enters the portal, try to get Illinois to bid against themselves. After he enters the portal, just explain to him that the numbers didn't quite work out as expected. It's an easy game.
