so there isn't even a pretext anymore that NIL isn't just blatant pay-to-play?

RIP Mid-Majors Forever. I don't even know if Gonzaga will be able to keep up with the big boys (tiny school, small alumni base, etc.) anymore

Transfer Portal, recruiting and NIL all rolled into one. From ESPN:
Miami Hurricanes guard Isaiah Wong will enter the transfer portal on Friday if his name, image and likeness (NIL) compensation isn't increased, his NIL agent, Adam Papas of NEXT Sports Agency, told ESPN on Thursday.

"If Isaiah and his family don't feel that the NIL number meets their expectations they will be entering the transfer portal tomorrow, while maintaining his eligibility in the NBA draft and going through the draft process," Papas said.
Nobody plays for the name on the front anymore. It's all about the name on the back.

I don't know that NIL really changes the pecking order much. At the end of the day, there are only so many spots. The bigger problem for mids is the immediate eligibility. One good season and you look for a better spot. I suppose NIL increases the incentive to move up, so there is that.

I think it's the combo - you can be the star at a Mid Major, but if you transfer, not only can you play right away.. you know the downside risk of being relegated to the bench will at least get you some coin in your pocket, not too bad of a fallback even if it doesn't work out too well basketball wise.

Playing for the name in the front is what allowed student athletes to be profited off of while getting little in return for decades. That system is gone, and that’s okay. Can’t hate on kids for looking out for their best interest, that what the pros would do too.

Gross oversimplification. Sure, there's greed involved. To varying degrees, by individual. But to say that the school and winning don't matter...hell, no.

A rebalancing of the power and money was long overdue. Are things perfect? Hell, no.

I love the Illini, but I didn't go to school there. I attended multiple schools while serving in the military. Always kept rooting for the Illini, and there are some legends that I'll never forget. That said, I attended multiple schools so I could get a piece of paper and a good paying job. While I didn't get the traditional college experience, I did achieve the end goal- I got a job.

I don't blame players trying to max out as much as possible. Kids choose law school, med school, and all sorts of other trades based on the money they'll make once they graduate that school. As much as it sucks to not know who will be playing year to year, I'm not against kids maxing out.

Right?? I'd love to add a player like him but with all the stirring up of TSJ and Nance, I do no think my brain can handle any more players until we get clarity from those two

I’m learning the tricks of the trade for an “insider”.

• post something vague but that implies good news
• don’t post the actual name just in case you are wrong (but hide it under the veil of “not wanting to spoil the moment”)
• tease the people guessing
• when nothing happens point to your original statement saying it wasn’t a lock
• disappear for a little
• if you are right—gloat!
• if wrong- recruiting is fluid/camp issues
• repeat

Since this thread is all about speculation what about Hawkins entering the portal?

I see Antonio Reeves of ISU landed in Kentucky. I'm not surprised that he found a spot in an elite program..that's how good he is.
