Just spit-balling here...If a couple of transfers announce a commitment to Illinois today, a current player who is worried about playing time still has until Sunday to enter their name into the portal (and have immediate eligibility). However, if the transfers announce after Sunday, current players can still transfer, but they would have to get a waiver to play immediately. Any chance this is the reason we haven't seen any movement yet?
That seems way more devious than what we know of BU. Besides, do you really want that player to be forced to be on the team...seems toxic.

I know the NCAA is considered "evil" and all, but who knows what is right and just. Remember when the NCAA started none of this was predatory. Athletic scholarships to cover tuition along with room and board, for playing a sport, seems fair to me. There weren't billion dollar TV deals for College Football and March Madness.. that stuff came later and the old way no longer made sense. Giving players a share of the cut seems fair to me.. but like this? Legalized bagman like Ruiz just engaging in a blatant pay-to-play? It's all very dirty. I would prefer if the players be allowed to unionize and collectively bargain as a unit to bring some semblance and order to the whole mess. Players should be allowed compensation, but the way it's going about it needs to change. This situation with Wong and Miami feels like a straw that breaks the camel's back for a need for some common-sense reform to work something out that is fair to the players but not the wild wild west.

Who are Illinois's biggest bagmen anyways? I'm happy to contribute what I can for the Illini Basketball cause, but would prefer to not be engaging in these Ruiz-like shenanigans and players holding teams hostage and the like.
I mean you say it hasn't always been predatory but the whole "student athlete" designation was invented by the NCAA in the 50s, not for some noble idea of amateur sportsmanship, but to avoid having to pay workman's comp to injured players (particularly death benefits for a college football player who died of a head injury sustained while playing). Athletic scholarships may have been sufficient compensation once, but with the money flowing in the sport now it's simply not.

What about the same gifs posted over and over again as though they are somehow still funny or clever?

The above says it all for me..........Walken on Sunshine..........................yep...................yep yep........................................The daily recruiting threads has , for me , threw back the veil on who is a glass half empty or a glass half full Illini fanatic..........the redundancy of posts to a particular subject matter pertaining to the Illini after a while reveals hidden layers of emotions that are tied to certain posters and of a negative nature........

Hey , if being negative about the beloved is your thing , then it's your right to post that drivel until Dan thinks otherwise...........I prefer to tout the positives and word the negative into a positive feedback frame of mind , to minimize the pain in my brain......I come here to fellowship with my friends and learn more about the new posters and how they feel.......It's a joy and a privilege to be able to post my thoughts with my bros and get ideas from their thoughts...............

my glass half full vision is fueled by the # 8 recruiting class coming in this year and what can happen through the transfer portal to improve our team......
I am truly excited about a new O & B blood transfusion of new plasma into the veins of the Illini...........A new flow......a new pace.........a new group of leaders evolving before our eyes.........................Plenty of time to fill in the roster and snag some 2023 recruits and keep nurturing the 2024 recruits already committed ...............................................Yes , the future is bright and if my trusted "" insiders "" post something , I will believe them regardless of the outcome....

You see , when I trust someone and their opinion , info or whatever , I do my due diligence but over the course of time , my trusted bros have been honest and true in their thoughts given to us .....For anyone to NOT appreciate their posts , much less believe them , then that is the epitome of glass half empty.........never have I ever thought of their info and posts as nothing but positive.............

You could call it GOSSIP I guess......sharing the gossip over the backyard fence with other cronies and probably is a good description of it ........

The posts about an insiders list of excuses for misses is not needed here in my humble opinion..........we are all here for valid reasons of insane fandom for the Illini and should be on the same side and yes disagreements are likely but they have been on the rise lately and that worries me.......but my glass half full mentality realizes the increase is out of my control and that soothe's my inner being.........

Now , is TODAY the day ??????..................................where are those !#%^((&^##%&* insiders.........???

We've only got 3 guys left that played meaningful minutes. We've only brought in 4 Fr and 1 transfer, meaning we've only currently got 9 scholarship players, only 2 of them post players that have any chance to see the floor. There are plenty of minutes available. If you're leaving because of opportunity, you are no competitor and no one I want on my team.
That's exactly how I feel - if one of the 3 returning players that saw any meaningful playing time don't want to compete with 4 freshman (none of which are bigs) or an experienced transfer or two, they are in the wrong place to begin with. I highly doubt we see more movement out for playing time purposes - CoHawk, RJ and Goode all have a unique role that none of the transfers in will completely replace

Gross oversimplification. Sure, there's greed involved. To varying degrees, by individual. But to say that the school and winning don't matter...hell, no.

A rebalancing of the power and money was long overdue. Are things perfect? Hell, no.
It also pretends that there wasn't an entire infrastructure for shoe companies to steer kids to certain schools for profit.

How many teenagers committed to schools without ever visiting them in the old system? How many schools were blatantly caught paying players and were back in the championship 2 years later?

IL appears to be adjusting quite well to the new normal and hopefully we hear some good news soon.

Going OT, which is, of course, my specialty, anyone of a certain age (like me) questioning the value of communication via GIFs and texting should spend some time reading and listening to linguist John McWhorter. It will help rewire your brain to the present day. And for those young'uns among us, don't scoff/roll ur eyz: you'll be here sooner than you think ;)

You can certainly be optimistic, but by appearances to date we aren't adjusting. That could be admin, coaching, or alumni.

Granted, this whole process (outside of the Pack announcement) is very opaque. So perhaps we have adjusted extremely well. But there is nothing you can point to that proves that.

As a cranky man of advancing middle age, I completely get you; however, they're a kind of language, and efficient shortcuts at that. Very useful, IMO. And many of them make me chuckle even having seen (and used) them hundreds of times. Frankly, our threads would be dry and dull w/o them. Go read those of our competitor schools whose sites lack the functionality to insert these.
I'll be sad (or hopefully deep in dementia) the day I stop laughing at the same, childish things. It's a large part of what makes the day go around.

If the $$ sources are smart the process will stay opaque. Making amounts public will only lead to more players like Wong being butt hurt that someone else on the team is getting more than him.

The NCAA needs to change with the times or die with them. Underwood can leave Illinois when/if he wants to make more money. The players need to have that same luxury. It might keep them in college longer which helps the quality of the game.
Then shouldn't we take the degree and classes out of the equation? They haven't picked the college first for school in your scenario. They also failed in doing research on the coaching staff and their abilities to train and develop talent before they came to said campus. Aren't these teenagers who are choosing a school and not a job? Big difference...a coach is the teacher. My 6th grader shouldn't have all the same privileges as his instructors if he makes them look good, should he????
