Nance isn't coming here since we took Mayer time to quit beating this poor horse and move on.. Not happening period end of story.. Nance only wants to be a 4 and not a 5 so he will end up at UNC most likely.

I want to see Lieb get the extra minutes at the 5. Is he able? I think it is possible if not bring in Butz..

To me it all depends on how effective Hawk will be defending the 5. If he can defend, then splitting the time with Dain works fine and we only need an emergency backup. Would rather see a developmental freshman athlete like a young Hawk or Dain. If not available you plug the hole however you can. Just needs to be better than Lieb. Would have liked to hear that Lieb is capable but not hearing that from the insiders.

Re: Nance/Butz I think a lot of the argument stems from a lack of clarity on what role we are trying to fill.

IMO, for the 5 right now we have the long, athletic stretch 5 (CH) and the more physical, traditional 5 (DD) already on the roster. We don’t have the BBV/Omar “spot” 5 position filled. Lieb doesn’t seem capable of filling that role at this point.

So to to me, Nance would fill a role we already have and we would essentially be replacing CH. Stats suggest this would probably be an upgrade and, if nothing else, Nance seems more consistent than CH, but he’s also 2 years older. I don’t know if either CH or DD would be happy to be relegated to the “spot” role and may leave and/or sulk on the bench so that role likely won’t be filled anyway.

So to me the question on Butz v Nace is really whether you would rather upgrade your stretch 5 role or fill your spot role. I think Butz fills more of a need and for that reason is my preference. I understand how an upgrade looks attractive but I actually think the roster is more complete with Butz. JMHO.
And to be clear, it's not that I'm really sold on Butz as that patch, but it is getting late. Nevertheless, he has transferred once already. Maybe he has the wrong attitude above the neck. That's all a decision for BU. If he has the right attitude and fire, put him in there for backup D against the bigs, keep those bigs off the boards, and endlessly practice free throws with a shot doctor.

BBV was actually the ideal spot 5 IMO because you knew you could put him out there for short stretches and not get abused in the post or on the boards. Butz seems capable of at least not being dominated in spot minutes. I think that’s all we need.

I wonder which Mac Irvin Fire player Hurley has his sights set on? Tbh it’s difficult to sustain an AC pool of guys that are simply AAU coaches of prospective recruits.
JJ Taylor would be my guess. Maybe Dai Dai Ames.

Irvin, while skeezy, has connections to the Fire and Kenwood, which is becoming the top basketball school in Chicago. To me this actually hurts Missouri. We have a very strong connection with Meanstreets. I'm think Streets is not a huge Irvin fan, so don't think ASU will now be able to get into Meanstreets. However, Gates at Missou has connections to the Fire and needs Chicago recruits. This would make it harder.

Question for Insiders: If Lieb is not going to be useful for Illinois, is he going to graduate in three years with his business degree and transfer to get two years of playing in a smaller conference? Gotta think he could find playing time in a conference where he would be the biggest guy on the court. Would be nice to free up that roster spot for next year, even if for another development type guy.

Or is he still potentially going to be playable in the next two years?

Absolutely. And that would be the ideal scenario for us. I see no problem with Dainja and Hawk playing the 5 and selling Nance on being the 4. That doesn't mean he''d never play the 5. But I think you could legtimately promise him most of his time would be at PF.

IMO the staff should not give up on getting him.
Agree 100%.

It's always seemed like BU has been willing to take flyers on guys to fill scholarships. I can't think of a single one that's really worked out long term and most of them (Kane, Greg E., Vesel...) have transferred out after a year or two so there's been no long term impact. It seems like Lieb is a guy that's probably not going to contribute but is going to use a scholarship for four years. We're seeing a little bit of that crunch now where we probably would have liked to take two more impact guys and leave a scholarship open, but can't. Any chance BU rethinks his recruiting strategy when it comes to filling the end of the roster with four year long shot developmental guys?

Very impressed with Dain's handles. I thought I saw where Butz put up 24 on N.W while at Depaul. I wonder if that was against Pete.
Anyway, looking forward to this season. What an off season it has been thus far. Going to be fun to watch this year.

Man, there's no way you can compare Underwood's recruitment strategy when we were triage mode versus where we are now.
