Orrrrrr we just took Mayer instead
Think we got a guy that fits our new system better. Sure, if Nance wanted to come, I would have welcomed him with open arms. However, I have watched both players and Mayer is MUCH more familiar with how to run and gun. Not saying Nance can't, but Matt has done it every day at Baylor. I still go back to the knowledge that Mayer was the first recruit BU went after at OSU. Tim Anderson was involved in this recruitment, too. This staff has proven that they can Big Boy recruit. Anyone that says otherwise hasn't watched college basketball long enough.

Just wondering. Terry Gannon, my favorite announcer, played basketball at Joliet Catholic, I think; then played on '83 NC State championship team under Coach Valvano. How did Illinois miss him? One that got away. You can't win them all, I guess.

Can confirm that TG (who I also like quite a bit as an announcer) attended Joliet Catholic. He was (maybe) 6'1", and was more of what today would be a "lead guard" - did all of the scoring on a pretty mediocre team. I don't think he had shown true PG skills at that point, and I don't think it was much of a recruiting miss - we had Derek Harper and landed Bruce Douglas. And that's not to knock at all his career at NC State, he was an important role player on a championship team.

Went to the Illini Tailgate in Peoria last night. Was an awesome time. Brad touched on the same things that had been listed in this thread before.

One thing that he did say was that he was in favor of NIL and that we are benefitting from it.

He asked who all was at the Iowa game and were on the court after the game. Some people raised their hands. After that he asked if we wanted to get back there again. Everyone obviously shook their head yes. He said NIL is how we do it and that its a new day in college sports. Said that they were going to most likely bring on more staff to help with it. Said agents are hiring kids in 9-10th grade now and you speak with them instead of the prospect.

Just an interesting tid bit.

This is awesome. Complete buy-in from the coach(es) is necessary to maintain a high level in today's environment. Brad gets it.

If Nance wants to go elsewhere, that's his choice. You guys act like BU and co haven't thought of that possibility in the construction of our team.

For Pete's sake.
Clever +1.

Anyone notice how one of our *starters* ending up transferring to Duke? The crisis in confidence here sometimes makes the mind reel...

Besides, Underwood survived each and every ultimatum that he be fired here. And he's not too shabby as a recruiter.

I'm just hoping he puts 7'8" kindergartener Dee Dee Megadoodoo on his radar before Tom Izzo finds out and snags the #1 spot in the NCAA 2035 pre-season rankings.

I looked back at the 1983 recruiting thread and found nothing. Must not have been interested or its buried deep below the 22-23 recruiting thread...

Over the table is a helluva lot better than under. WRT Illinois, NIL puts us on a much leveler playing field, no doubt about it. With our fanbase and intensity we can wield very attractive packages. And that top prospects are getting agent advisors now is a great, as those guys are generally analytical and much more analytical than a typical player's camp.

Am very comfortable that Whitman is on top of this development and he recognizes how critically important it is.

Was told they’re hosting Haugh for an OV next week … Talked to some people I know who were at the recent UA camp and they said some great things about Haugh. One told me he reminds him of Giorgi a little bit …

I have no idea about the Giorgi comp (based on very limited clips). Don't see it, but that's good. What I do see, is a Mayer type, very versatile and skilled. ~90% a futures play, but that's ok. Get him in the program and Fletch him up.

If it works for basketball there’s no reason it can’t work for football too. Just might take awhile longer.

He was more talking about the passing, type of kid and body type coming in … Fletch had Giorgi pretty shredded very quickly and Haugh is in a similar mold 🤷🏻‍♂️

Everyone I talked to was really impressed with the passing which is something we all know Brad is a big fan of.

In all seriousness though, we haven’t heard a lot from you lately. Must be busy with team activities. ;)

He’s been to busy giving the team buckets … 😉

Obviously we took advantages of NIL. I am just curious 🤨 why we have not heard much news about the endorsement and real amount. Did I miss something or we are waiting for the deal being inked?

I’m not sure what you information you are expecting. There is no requirement to report to anyone other than IRS that I have heard about. I’m also not sure what the advantage to anyone would be to disclose these deals. Some of the big ones have gotten out, but most are being done quietly and I expect that’s how it will stay.

I thought about this and maybe that's what I am missing. However I think the purpose of NIL and some of them are for endorsement. So it would benefit the business to disclose them and they do. On the other hand, if it were boosters simply opening up the pocket for recruitment, there's no need to disclose them. And to think about it, it's probably better off not to disclose the amount to create pressure for future recruitment that you have to "up your game."
