Perrin sounds intelligent and with a good attitude. He'll work hard with Fletcher and add muscle mass and strength. That's super important for a skinny kid who's only 17. There is the chance he'll even grow another inch or two. There's a lot to like with this guy. Important to be sure he's fully vaccinated, or he'll suffer the Djokovic fate.

This is after watching a bit of tape today -- take it for what you will.

I suspect he will need a year of seasoning.
- He knows where the basket is. Most of the points seem to be at the rim. He had a big height advantage in most of the tape I saw.
- His stated goal is to become a good outside shooter.
- He moves okay.
- Fouls are an issue. He finishes many games w/4 fouls on ~28m of play.
- He brings the ball down low on rebounds (waist height).
- His "power dribble" is really loose. Turnovers waiting to happen in the Big10.
- He hesitates before most passes out of the post and telegraphs them. (turnover concern?)
- Fletch has some work to do. (He is 17, and grew 6" in the last few years.)

None of the tape showed him on defense. There was not enough tape to get a feel of how he moves on offense when he isn't the #1 target.
Yeah, I haven't found much tape to watch. I think you see his potential in what little there is. And his offer sheet makes me confident.

We have 8 new players coming in and all should make a contribution sooner rather than later. Hard to imagine that any team in the country can top that. Can we start the season now?

I vote for a summer league with the rookies.

Will Perrin really wear #25, or was that just a Tipton Edits sort of thing?

Nobody is going to want to play us this year. We are too tall too quick too bouncy too deep and have too many shooters. The beginning of the season might be a bit frustrating with all the new players, but the wave after wave of players is going to really pay off as the season moves forward. Perrin is the perfect last piece.

I'm not going to check rosters, but perhaps KY, Duke, UNC, ARIZ, Ohio St, Texas Tech, KS, UCLA, Texas, Baylor and the Zags?
Yes, there are teams more talented than us, some of them way more (though as FinallyMade posted OSU probably doesn't belong on that list).

It's one thing to like what we have and how BU and staff have reloaded. But let's not act like we're the only team with talented players.

I agree, but keep in mind it's only June. Loyalty hype train hasn't even left the station yet.

Welcome aboard Zacharie Perrin ! The write up on ESPN is definitely worth a read. He's only 17 and seems to have such a great attitude in the quotes I put in bold. Sorry if already posted.

Zacharie Perrin, a top international basketball prospect, has committed to the University of Illinois, he told ESPN on Tuesday.

"Coach Underwood and Coach Alexander came up with a very detailed plan for how to take my skillset and body to the next level," Perrin said via text. "They analyzed my film, figured out my strengths and weaknesses, and laid out a plan that made a lot of sense. They are a winning program, coming off back-to-back Big Ten championships. They are also a team that needed a rotation big, so there is a chance I can help them right away."

The 6-foot-11, 220 pound, 17-year-old Perrin is considered one of the most promising European prospects committing to the college route in the class of 2022. A late bloomer who stood only 6-foot-4 in 2019, he was almost a complete unknown before earning a surprise place on the French U18 national team at last summer's European Championship as a 16-year-old, where he emerged as one of the team's best scorers and rebounders.

Perrin was named MVP of the Adidas Next Generation qualifying tournament in Patras, Greece this past April, after posting 17.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in 31 minutes per game. He was later called up to the Next Generation All-Star Team at the Euroleague Final Four in Belgrade, Serbia, in May, posting 10 points and 5.8 rebounds in 23 minutes per game. He spent this past season playing for Antibes in the French Espoirs Pro B league, where he was named MVP after posting 21.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals in 30 minutes per game, converting 68% of his 2-point attempts and 26% of his 3-point attempts in 24 games.

"I didn't consider college until very late in the process since I was focused on going pro with Antibes," Perrin said. "UCLA, Texas, Florida, Memphis and BYU all recruited me, but the facilities, staff and the overall level of the Big Ten made it difficult to pass up Illinois. Once college programs started to present their projects, it became clear to me that's what I wanted to do. I didn't have a ton of European options outside of Antibes because of French league regulations."

Perrin, who doesn't turn 18 until the end of August, will be one the youngest players in college basketball next season. He plans on enrolling at Illinois at the conclusion of the FIBA U18 European Championship, which will be held in Izmir, Turkey the first week of August. The lefty Perrin caught the eye of international scouts and college coaches with his size, wingspan, frame, fluidity, touch and scoring instincts, playing with a level of confidence offensively that belies his lack of experience.

"My goal is to first and foremost become a better basketball player. I am only 17 years old, and still need a lot of development physically. There isn't a better place to gain strength than college. I will also focus on becoming a very good outside shooter. I think I can become a very tough mismatch both at the 4 with my size and at the 5 with my shooting and quickness. Hopefully it gets me to a high level of professional basketball in a few years."

Vive la Illinois! :chief: :illinois: :ah:
Wondering if this kid attended and graduated from HS?? Not sure how the education system is set up in France or what the admissions requirements are for foreign students at the UI...but not turning 18 until August this year would make him an early HS graduate in this country...thinking Fletch could really help a kid of this age develop physically....could be a beast in a couple years!

Michigan gets a commitment from Lebanese forward Youssef Khayat and then the very next day, we get the commitment from French forward Zacharie Perrin. For 2 teams that have had a rekindled rivalry over the last few years, perhaps the growth and success of these 2 forwards will mirror the success of our Illini and the Wolverines. my birthday is also in late august (class cutoff was sept 1) so i technically graduated high school and even started college classes before i turned 18. that was 20 years ago but math still checks out depending on the class cutoff date.

In the U.S., the regular cutoff is typically around August 31st. Hundreds of thousands of kids who turn 18 in August start college every year.
