Our Number 1 option is a high 3 star recruit? Meh. I trust Underwood and Staff but that's super underwhelming. Guess they're worried about "recruiting over" the 2022 class or scaring away 2024. So 2023 will be a fairly nothing class?
We could always use an enforcer that is capable of double doubles. He reminds me of a certain player in the late 80's on a hated rival that came from Springfield Lanphier HS.

I will personally take every 6’8 athlete that plays incredibly hard, defends well, and impacts the game without needing to score. Every loaded roster needs multi-year role players

Ed Horton, good call.

Hansberry has more offensive tools/versatility than Horton did though.

You're certainly correct, and he's a bit faster down the court. :D

Just can't forget that certain game where the man put down a 26/17 on us. National TV #9 vs #2 on 02-06-89. Intense game where the refs were heavily influenced by the home crowd.

Supposedly he was headed for C-U. I was attending Lou's basketball camp that summer when his younger brother got busted and sent home for robbing other campers rooms. I assume that hurt our relationaship with Ed.

Hi All,

Looks like you guys are looking at his evaluation from back when he was a freshman. Here is the evaluation that was published earlier this month, equipped with 70+ film clips: Player Evaluation.

Enjoy, cause the kid can really play.
That's a lot of words...

I scrolled to the bottom and read:

Coachability

  • “One of the most coachable players I’ve ever been around” (Mount St. Joseph Assistant Coach, Jordon Griffin).
  • A student of the game
  • One of the first to arrive in the gym and one of the last to leave
    • Gets in extra conditioning and works on flexibility after workouts
  • A leader on the court
  • Outstanding executor of game plans on both ends
  • High character

Definitely a Brad type of #everydayguy

Not one bit. I think Lou wanted Big Ed to be a post player. He saw himself more in the mold of Bernard King. From what I remember, that took Illinois out of the running. (Horton was a great athlete in high school but certainly bulked up in college.)

He actually had a pretty solid career with Iowa. His Lanphier teammate, Kevin Gamble, turned out to be the better player of the two and nearly made an NBA All-Star game with the Boston Celtics. Great guy, too.

Looks like the type of guy who can play small ball center.

Hmmmmm, I thought there were complications about the number of scholarships available. Something along the lines of having only 2 available and thinking we would get Ben Wilson and Lowell Hamilton instead, or wanting him to redshirt.

The way I remember the story, Horton wanted to come to Illinois, but he also wanted to play with Gamble. Henson wasn't sold on Gamble and wouldn't offer him a scholarship. Gamble committed to Iowa and Horton went also.
