Whitmore was outside of the top 100 when we offered and ended up as a bonafide 5*, potential lottery pick and Amani’s best offer was like Penn State before we offered. He ended the summer with offers from Auburn, Oregon, WVU, Maryland, probably more I’m forgetting.

I’d classify them both as very very good early evals
So basically early-eval means before other “top” programs get involved. Fair enough. I wasn’t disputing the description necessarily, just seemed a bit strange that a player would have double digit (or near) offers and BU and staff would be credited with being in there early. I guess I was just thinking the narrative meant being first or one of first teams involved with a player rather than just before blue bloods. I mean Maryland offered Cam nearly a year before Illinois did. And Penn St and LSU both offered Cam and Amani before the Illini. I know MD and PSU’s early involvement has something to do with geography, but then so did Illinois’s with Chester.

Again, I’m not disputing BU and staff’s prowess in player evaluation or recruiting. I think we all know they are doing an incredible job. Was just kind of wondering if the early-eval narrative was really accurate since obviously there were other coaching staffs who saw that same potential in the two players. But I see now the narrative isn’t necessarily built around being first or first couple teams involved, but being early enough to build some kind of foundation with the recruit that can withstand the blue blood’s arrival. Thanks.

That's been an incredibly stupid and shortsighted move practically every time we've done it, but whatever.

True, but we don't know what the staff's evaluation is --it's pretty clear that the top-100 rankings on the internet is not how the staff would prioritize guys. The trend on the recruiting front is pretty amazing. Feels like everything is headed in the right direction, whether it's fan and booster support, hitting the portal, roster construction, or high school recruiting. Oh, and undoubtedly the most important factor: Winning.

Staff really has Nojus on slow play. It's surprising since I thought he had a good Summer and a good FIBA. Xavier and Ole Miss have jumped in.
What/who are they waiting on and where is he as far as his commitment? Is he ready to pop?

Commits before senior year seem to have lost their value as so many kids re-open their recruitment / decommit prior to signing day.

Not jumping at first player willing to commit but rather seeing how they develop during summer AAU and their senior year just makes sense for borderline recruits. You can make an offer but not have it be commitable. Good example is local kid Ty Pence (St Joseph Odgen class A school) who they recruited and offered but ended up at Illinois State. He got the glamor of an Illinois offer but probably ended at right level.

It appears Brad and team has the MOJO to jump in late and still win quality recruits - just like the blue bloods. Its nice to know we are systematically scouting and identifying a large number of potential recuits so we have backup plan for backup plan or large sales funnel. It seems like Weber and Groce would scout a lot fewer players and if they could not sign who they wanted would get desperate and have to take real long shots.

Let's not be naive here, the most important factor....NIL$.

Glad to see we are agressive in NIL without being crazy like Miami or Texas A&M.

I think at end of day the biggest differences will be:

1. more successful non P5 players transfer to P5 so they can get some NIL
2. schools that were cheating in past (KanXXS DuXX, KenXXX, MemXXX cough cough) will lose their competetive advantage

Any school who wants to be top 20 will have to set up a strong NIL program. Payments will eventually be similar at most Top 50 schools so it recruits will go back to choosing on coach, program, school.

Every school cheated in the past. Except maybe Northwestern

We'll see. Particularly in basketball there is a pretty dramatic gradient in terms of how much fans (aka the money) care about basketball and basketball recruiting.

And then from a rational economic perspective, Michigan State's first five star is worth more to MSU than Duke's fifth five star is worth to Duke. Not everybody's marginal value is going to be the same for every school.

And I think the advantage to those that are able to be organized and thorough in the way they set their NIL machine up will persist for quite awhile assuming the rules stay the same.

Luckily we are ahead of the curve on that last part. For once.

Prof Gotheil Econ 101 Lincoln Hall auditorium held 700 students - one of my favorite classes in 1980. I can see you were paying attention!
