You’re going way back. Lol. 10 years before Magic, there was 6-5 point guard Pete Maravich. Best ballhandler and passer in my time as a fan. Ask Larry Bird about him. Oh, and he is still college basketball’s all time leading scoring despite only getting 24 regular season games, only three seasons, no shot clock, no three point line, one free throw on common fouls. 44.5 for his career. Never played a minute at center at 6-5. Lol
Heck, Illinois’ centers in the 60s were guys like 6-10 Skip Thoren. In the 50s, all time Illini great Red Kerr was 6-10 and went on the be an NBA all star.
There was a noticeable difference in style of play in the 50s and 60s. By the mid-60s, the game was more of the modern game we know. Rick Mount, a 6-4 guard from Purdue, is still the best shooter not named Curry that I’ve seen. Any angle, any distance for him. Heck, 7-2 Kareem played college in the 60s and was still a force in the NBA when Magic, Bird and Jordan came along.
combes , thank you for those words about Pistol Pete M. and Rick Mount......................Pistol Pete was a magician right in front of you ......No boxes or curtains , but his sleight of hand with the basketball had me asking myself "" How in the h*ll did he do that ""........I hated the Southeastern Conference because of Kentucky but I would watch it when it was on Saturday afternoon's just to watch Pete.......,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I watched a Bio video on Pete and it brought home to me the pressure he had on his shoulders...........44.5 ppg................wow...............think about that with , as combes stated , no 3 pter's and the FT deal..............
Unreal , just like Rick Mount's shooting ability.............The dude would get the ball and weave his way down the sidelines till he was close to the true corner shot , do a fake on the defender , turn his back to the defender , then turn around and shoot as he was falling out of bounds and was NEAR a dead eye dick there probably over 80 % on that shot for a career.................cross halfcourt and he was in range and usually made it ........Had a lot of 50 + point games ...I don't remember if he did against us and too buzzed right now to look...................Put it this way he could have been a millionaire just shooting horse across the nation.............................
BTW , I went to the dispensary earlier today and got some "" Popcorn Heady Betty "" flower..............WOW , it's good.......It really really is...............
