This is right. Sergio was definitely an IU lean. One of my fraternity brothers ran into Griffin and McLain on their recruiting trip at Brinkley Hall. He was also a Peoria guy. He talked to them about Peoria and Champaign for over an hour. He thought nothing of it. They committed and a day or two later he got a handwritten note at his dorm from Lon Krueger thanking him for everything he did when talking to Sergio and Marcus. He still has the letter.
Hopefully it was signed “Lon Kruger.” :)

Always? Are you one of those guys who believe that Illinois basketball began with the Flying Illini? Take a look at some of Combes' teams or Mills' teams. Plenty of nationally ranked teams that rarely had CPS players.
I should have said in the last 40 years.

Mills coaches during a World War so not so sure what the makeup or quality of basketball was at that time.

Combes won 4 conference championships. First one had Wally Osterkorn from CPS. Second one had Irv Beromos from CPS. Third one had Red Kerr and Irv Beromos. Both stars on the team from CPS. Fourth one had Bob Starnes as a key player. He was CPS.

In the last 40 years the good Illini teams have usually had a key contributor from CPS. Not sure it really matters anymore where you get kids from as long as they are good. For years fans seemed obsessed with “locking up the state” for basketball and football. Recent results in both sports show that is less important compared to quality of players.

Paducah, Ky
Lahn Krueger, longtime CU resident, keeps a pulse on UI sports. No relation to the former Illinois coach of a similar name.

Kruger was a great coach, but objectively that should have been Collins' job, except to the extent that it should have remained Henson's job.

Guenther hired his way out of a mess of his own making with Kruger and Self, I think that's a fair way to describe the scenario.
Wasn't ever going to happen...too soon after the Deon Thomas drama. And it was time for Lou to retire; recruiting had been slipping and it was the right time for a change. Doesn't take away from what he accomplished here
