Joel Goodson

respect my decision™
Moretti: not a chucker, not a practitioner of hero ball, excellent distributor and high hoops IQ. Good mid-range shooter, good floater touch and pretty darn deadly bomber (42.9% from beyond the arc in recent international tourney). Love his pedigree too. I think he'll acclimate quickly. As others have mentioned, I think D will be his biggest challenge.

Agreed, and as with a lot of freshman, adapting to a more physical style of play / getting stronger, along with his D, will determine his early playing time.

Based on his highlights, this looks like a very good and much needed get for us. Kid seems to have outstanding vision and passing ability and I really like his pull-up midrange game. On the offensive side he is extremely visible on the court, captains the team, and shows exceptional instinct. The one major concern I have watching him play are that it looks like he's going to need a decent amount of work on the defensive side of the ball as he plays pretty far off the guy he is defending and is a bit passive on that end of the floor, though he does a decent job of lurking the passing lanes for quick steals and transition. Also wonder from those in the know how his speed looks like it will stack up against B10 guards. It could be the videos but it looks like he might be average to very slightly below average speed compared to other B10 point guards.

All said, this kid looks like a savant on the offensive end so if we can get him serviceable on the defensive end, kid will be truly phenomenal. Tremendous job by the Illini staff.
The thing is we will have four 6'2"ish guards on the roster by next season and none of them seems NBA bound soon. They will probably have to beat each other for the minutes but I guess that's a good problem to have these days.

Sorry if I missed this in the past, but I see (ESPN Top 100) that Matas Buzelis is from IL and not currently committed anywhere. Any interest from each side or....?

But he yells at his players too much and is mean!

Some researcher who is a sports buff should do a real study on personality types of coaches and team performance and if there is some secret sauce to being a top-success-level coach. Or conversely, if there are personality types that pretty much guarantee failure.

I would imagine that some mix of tough love along with love for this squad would be a high finisher in such a study for those coaches who succeed at the highest level.

Hello! Coach that wears Orange a lot...

Not a researcher, but I have been coached and have coached a lot of youths. I would think good coach personalities would include honest assessment/communication, providing the means to help/teach palyers to improve on their weakness (and enhance strengths), point out the mistakes without humiliating the player. If a coach screams at a player and the player agrees they deserved it, then that can work. I never screamed at a kid, but I certainly let them know if a I thought they were not even trying to apply what we practiced/worked on. From my experience the guys that were not good coaches were the ones that did not know how to communicate with their players. Some type of connection is essential.

You’ve highlighted what boils down to the importance of honesty and mutual respect – from player to coach and from coach to player. (And both coach and player to the Program and history of the Institution).

It’s astounding (or not) just how far mutual respect goes in this Life. In all relationships and places.

Perhaps some players who leave the program did not adapt well to the ‘Illini Way’ (of this manifestation of 'respect'). Maybe they believed they were being criticized (unfairly) instead of actually being respected with a certain kind of tough love. Thus – as you point out – the essential importance of communication.

That kind of 'Common Purpose' is a necessary quality. Can't have competing agendas.

I also learned that applied in a professional environment as well. A least for me.

True. I'm not in education but am very good friends with many who are both teachers and administrators. When you are with them that's all they talk about. One recurring statement I've heard a multitude of times is, "If you're going to be a teacher you'd better love kids. If you don't, they will know it in a heartbeat and you will be a failure regardless of how smart or well prepared you are." I'm guessing the same hold true for coaches. I believe the players all love BU because they know he loves them.

Another statement we heard as we approached our working life: “Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life.”

And with Coaches... not only do they have to love young people and the sports they play... but Coaches have to also be the Good Parent – the Good Dad or Mom and the Good Psychologist (when to offer the sympathetic shoulder) and the Teacher/Educator (life lessons, setting a good example). And all the while WINNING GAMES and outsmarting the opposition who are trying to do the same to you and staying one step ahead of the arm-chair critics who are always at the ready to criticize you and what you're doing.

Oh... and also be sure to be a Media Star that is always charming and personable in front of the microphone. And when out in public and away from the Arena.

Other than that... this Coaching gig is easy!

If you can't see the difference in length, and particularly athleticism, go see an optometrist, stat.
I read his post as more of a comment on Moretti's height, to which I do not agree. This year we have more length and versatility than we've had in a long time, so it can't be that, right?!
