posting this here , as it makes the most sense

I vividly recall the days when the key to a successful recruiting year often included getting the best player out of Simeon.
We have had some really great ones out of there. For various reasons, those days are basically over.
Those days are over because the CPA tightened the rules on attending any school you wanted to within the system based on the availability of a particluar offered curriculum or even a single class. Those coaches figured out how to take advantage of a system that was intended to help students academicaly.

I don't think its a committable offer personally. I could be wrong, we'll see. Pence kid had an ILL offer around same time period and he is a bigger stronger kid than Certa. Big difference battling Prairie Central and St. Joe Ogden vs battling B10 athletes. Kid can really play but ILL is bringing in some elite level guards that to me are way tougher.
Kind of like Brian Cardinal?

I don't care how tough you are if you can't shoot. We are shooting over 25 3 pters a game, and we are shooting 31.7%. That's quite frankly pathetic. Our best shooter from 3 is Mayer at 38.1%, #2 is Epps at 33.3%. That's pretty terrible.

We need shooters. I don't care how high you can jump, how fast you can run, or how many ppg you're scoring. We need someone that can shoot over 40% from 3 against Big Ten competition. If Certa can do that, I say sign him up immediately. He would be a specialist at Illinois, no one would expect him to be a lead guard, but we need that specialty in the worst way.

The NBA was a “big man’s league” for most of its existence up to that point (not many successful teams built around a shooting guard), and the prior year Portland had drafted a player similar to Jordan in Clyde Drexler, so one can understand the thinking in selecting Bowie at that time. Obviously in hindsight it was a mistake.
If Kofi was around then he would have been an easy lottery pick.

Paxton Warden is right there on the bench. 42% from three in high school.

LOL we can all cherry pick one kid in a 30 year span that made it at that level. Not many folks were clamoring for him to become an Illini, he got pushed around in HS but anytime he did he could shoot it well enough to make folks pay. Cardinal put in so much work, he was also 6'8 and filled out into a really nice size guy - completely different type of player than anyone we are discussing. Not saying the kid can't make it, but when you compare Epps, Harris, Mayer, TJS and Certa.....one of those doesn't seem to fit with the others. With that said, the kid is a Jr - hope he makes it.

Don't disagree at all, you also have to defend B10 guards and do other things than just be a shooter. The fact is he is shooting really well, but he certainly is not doing it against 6-5 B10 caliber athletic guards either. I just don't see it, hell just last week Pence put 41 on him and BCC and Certa wasn't the best player on the floor.

Quite a few national HS teams are interested in Morez ... Rita gonna look a heck of a lot different next year ... Have heard all 3 could wind up leaving ...
I often wonder about how those deals happen. Is it a nice house and job for parents? NIL-esq deals? Or just “Mom and/or Dad, I really want to move 1000 miles away and play for a different team next season.”

Ha! Yes it is, I did think there would be others from that exact town on the board. When people ask where I’m from, I start with Pontiac, and then move up or down (Fairbury or Bloomington) depending on if the answer is yes or no.

Not to start this again, but PC class of ‘99.
I lived in Fairbury one year. I was teaching at Ford Central in Piper City. That was back in the late 80's.

I like the one he basically dunks over James Brown.

The kid is a monster and looks way bigger than he did last year. And still has another year to fill out his frame. But he looks BIG ready right now.,
I know it's risky to read too much into highlight clips, but based on these clips MJ seems to simply play with a much higher running motor than JB.

I have to imagine they have better facilities, better coaches (I'm sure there are exceptions), fewer distractions, more academic support, and better competition. When you are that caliber of athlete, the NBA isn't just a pipedream. If you want to give yourself the best shot at your dream, you may have to go the extra 1000 miles...

Looks both taller and heavier. I'm usually skeptical about listed heights, but he might legitimately be 6'9.
