Big Jack

Decatur
Assuming TSJ moves on we will have 1.5 guys on the roster next year that can actually shoot a basketball. Goode can, Epps sometimes. BU and staff need to get out there and bring in at least a couple of guys that can shoot. We are just too easy to defend.
I would love to have Shannon back for another year specially if someone can teach him how hold onto the dang ball when he drives to the basket.. He has to have smaller hands because you notice he never palms the ball on his dunks its only cupped in his hand.. His handles are no wear near NBA ready IMHO... I do think he unlike Mayer is a team player first and would definitely be a big asset.

I don't know if I could settle for an inferior Timberlake.

This kid looks like a nice player, but quite frankly I'm tired of the covid years. This guy has already played 5 years, and he gets a 6th? He only played 9 games his Fr. year, maybe he got a RS?

since we got little of substance to talk about for a few days, I'm going to throw this out and I hope it hasn't already been discussed. Any chance Coleman comes back? Sounds crazy but I've seen him on the mock drafts anywhere from 35ish to 40's. I think Ayo was similar his sophomore year (I think they are similar in age) and stuck around for the bump in signing bonus. Lot goes into this decision but how much estimated signing bonus would he pass up this year, minus NIL money, to role the dice to move up to 1st round? (Which could be attainable with improved 3 point shooting, etc.) I think a pretty good boost. Let's also throw in, and again, just for sh*ts and grins, he did not partake in senior day festivities and the team would be built around him. I know, I know, means nothing but what else we got to talk about for a few days?

My son played with a sharpshooter in high school that is getting a little high major interest in the portal. Anyone know if we’re looking at Ethan Roberts at all?

Certa is definitely not getting the same love as others, but I know the Illini are HOT on him. Underwood has been to two of his games and has visited his high school an additional time during the school day on a random day back in November. Is that normal for a head coach to do? In addition, Alexander has been to more Central Catholic games this year than I can count. He was there in Springfield for the Supers and I'll bet he'll (and maybe BU) will be present tomorrow since the Illini don't seem to have anything else going on tomorrow. In addition, the fact that Northwestern, Penn State, and Wisconsin are offering him as well suggests this kid isn't a fluke. People who know things know they want him. And I hate to say it but Mildkitties and PSU are better than us right now.

So my assessment from seeing him a few times as well as on Thursday is that he has some work to do, especially on his body, but his first step and ability to penetrate from a still position to full steam is lightning quick, cat-like. The team he played on Thursday did a fantastic job of getting him off his game and preventing him from doing what he likes to do, but even then there was at least one (maybe two) drives into the paint where when he got going I was sold he's elite. He was not able to convert on the one penetration in particular I have in my mind, but the entry into the paint was like a lion on the prowl. Again, the opponent on Thursday disrupted him. He was obviously the focal point of their defensive scheme, and that team was talented for a 2A squad. They did get to the state semis after all. It's not like they were a chump group. Certa was clearly nervous or unsettled in the early going, and his team seemed to be excelling at the Illinois offensive set - one guy dribble the ball beyond the arc and four guys watch, so he wasn't getting a lot of help from others in the first half.

I would guess he had his worst game of the season, yet when it was all said and done he finished with a game high 19. Yes there were free throws, but those count right? We've certainly learned from the Illini this year that those are significant. In addition to Certa's ft's, there were other shots as well, a couple were daggers at pivotal moments, so he rose to the occasion when it mattered most. All in all, a 6'5" guard with elite shooting abilities who's only going to get stronger, who I think will also develop more dribble drive abilities could potentially be a serious weapon in the Illini arsenal. He's also grown 4 inches in the last year. Is he still growing?

Based on how we're going after him, I don't see him going anywhere else, and I think he has a better than average shot at being really good for us. His play this coming summer will be interesting to note. It will give us a better idea if what I'm saying is accurate.
Has Certa played against very good competition this year?

He’s getting keyed on by a Tom Klineschmidt led DePaul prep. Only 2 points midway through the 2nd quarter.

And I said that he hits a 25 footer in transition.

Edit: He’s now got 10 at the half. But I’m not sure he’s an early contributor at the P6 level. Walking up the court a lot. Seems winded even though they play zone defensively. But he’s only a junior, so maybe he can work on his body in the next year.

He plays pretty high level AAU ball.
He plays in 2A of course, but his conference is likely the best in the state. Their schedule was grueling. Did he play d1 guys probably a handful but not a ton they've played good teams though and he's dominated.

Certa ended up with 18/6 against a DePaul team that played several higher schools, but unless he was deferring to seniors playing their last game, I didn’t love his body language as this game got out of hand.

Well, apparently BU would like Certa on our team but not Harding... Just based on scholarships that have been offered. YIKES!!

I was wondering about Timberlake as he seems to be a solid veteran PG to help us manage next year. He has good numbers from Towson.

Moretti is better than Harding.
Anybody else watching this game right now, Moline/Benet? My thoughts about Harding being a wizard who is going to torch us in the future are only being justified from what I'm seeing right now. Moretti would have be too D4MN good to be better than Harding.

Harding at Iowa and Fears at MSU could be a double nightmare. BU has done a nice job of attracting quality point guards here...but hasn't been successful in developing them and keeping them here. 😠

They play the local Bloomington Normal schools which are much bigger than them and some catholic schools that are bigger than them. DePaul Prep played a much much tougher schedule than them though.

My guess would be the only D1 guy Certa played was Ty Pence, but they went zone against him. Probably should have tried something else because Pence went for 41. I think Certa had around 30 himself in that game, a loss.

Certa is a unanimous 1st team all stater by both the coaches and media, which is impressive for a Jr. You can clearly see the kid can shoot, but 2 things concern me about him. His percentage was under 37% for the year from 3. Yes he took a ton of them, so surely he took some bad shots because his team looked to him to score, but shooting won't get easier in the Big Ten. The other thing is, even though he scored 18 today, he couldn't get open and he couldn't defend DePaul Prep.

He's got a year to improve, but I'm with those that say, he still has some to prove in the summer. Right now I think he is a straight up specialist. I don't think he can defend a Big Ten wing. Something I question is, if the staff is interested in Certa, why weren't they interested in Asa Thomas? Thomas is taller at 6'7", was a 2nd team all state guy in class 3A and also a 3 pt guy. My guess would be it's a simple as they didn't feel the need for 3 pt shooting at this time last year and now it's too late.

Certa is a perfect sleeper.
