JMO - I would love to see lineup of Goode, Rogers, Dainja, Harris and one of new players at PG

It would only have one shooter Goode but it would play great defense, rebound well and could score inside.

We might be surprised how much freshman Hansberry, DGS, and Moretti can help.

graduate transfers - Domask and Harmon could provide maturity and solid scoring. I am more optimistic about Domask since SIU is better program.

I hope Coleman comes back for senior year but will not be heartbroken if he goes NBA. Good character, hard worker, steady improvement. Drove me crazy last year with his sloppy passes and crazy 3 pointer attempts. At his current skill level I don't think he is NBA level. It is hard to improve while in NBA - look how Ayo plateaued his 2nd year. Better to come back and be like Brian Cook. 20 ppg/10 rbg all american.

TSJ was nice addition last year but flawed game. Cannot create his own jump shot. Drives to hoop but does not elevate in lane and his shot is easily blocked. He has already played 4 years in college so he may not be able to improve further. I think its time to see what the kids can do.

Time warp back to last year. I think Brad should have taken TSJ or MM but not both. We would have been better team by end of year and better positioned for 2024 playing the kids. Also may not have lost RJ, Jayden and Skyy to portal.

I think we are on the same page. The Underwood Era has been an emotional roller coaster ... on one hand, during our BTT run in 2021 on the way to a #1 seed, that MIGHT have been the best any Illini team has looked in history for a short stretch other than 1989, 2005 and maybe a few select other teams. I know that sounds hyperbolic, but we honestly looked unstoppable. Then the Loyola gut punch absolutely devastated our fan base while we felt like we just got back on top of the mountain. The Kofi transfer drama plus the shaky start to 2021-22 had us down in the dumps, and then we fought back to win our first Big Ten championship in 17 years, avenging the screw job from the prior year (and let's not forget the emotions just during that one day of watching Nebraska squeak out a win in Madison and then winning an all-time classic vs. Iowa!). Then the drama of seeming like this past season was going to be a rebuilding year only to RELOAD with a vengeance, look AMAZING in November and early December, come crashing down circa the Skyy departure and then pretty much go up-and-down-etc. for the rest of the year.

We have been through a lot just in the last three seasons, and that isn't even looking at the shltshow that was COVID and the rebuilding years before that. It's hard to keep perspective, but looking at our lack of recent NCAAT success another way ... we haven't made it back to where we were circa 2006 yet, and we cannot hold Underwood the standard like we have. He's in the MIDDLE of building up our program again. The beginning ended when we were "back" in 2021, and we are now in the middle part where we need to keep recruiting up and keep getting back to the NCAAs and keep giving it our best shot. He has us back in the conversation where we will almost always be a threat to be a top 25 team the following year depending on transfer pickups ... that is about as good as you can ask for in this new college hoops world!
I won't be sold on BU being an elite coach until we contend for another BTT and get to an Elite 8. He has the financial resources to afford top tier assistants and players, so there is no reason we can't be a perennial top 25 team. I'm thrilled we got to enjoy the Kofi years, and I want to see whether BU can be more than a .500 coach in conference play without Kofi. He has earned that chance, but he has yet to make it happen. We were a popular pick to win the Natty in 2021 and we completely messed the bed, and you just can't ignore that when evaluating his record. I disagree that it's enough to be considered a threat to be a top 25 team; given our resources and with the right coaching it should be a given.

The way people engage in Ayo erasure in order to make arguments against BU drives me up a wall.

Lieb represents one end of the spectrum, where I root for a guy who leaves to be happy and succeed. The other end...well, you get one guess after who did what once this season was officially over.
I hope he'll be happy and finds what he's looking for in basketball success, and on positive note it opens up a scholarship that hopefully allows us to upgrade the center position to backup Dain. On a negative note, I thought he had already obtained his undergrad degree, and he apparently hasn't. Prioritizing an opportunity for playing time over that degree from Illinois vs ISU is short sighted for a guy who is not going to earn his living playing basketball.

I don't really love the QG add assuming Hawkings comes back. He feels redundant with some of our other pieces. Seems like Hansberry will never see the floor as well, and there were talks of him possibly being a contributor right away not that long ago.
Think of him as an insurance policy. We all buy it for a reason. Redundancy isn't a bad thing, especially since Dain spent a lot iof time on the bench because he was foul prone a lot of times last year

Dainja, Goode, Domask, Hansberry, Harmon in rotation.

Depth and talent level wouldn't be the problems.

Getting our guys out of the draft remains a big if on all three of the depth, talent, and continuity fronts.
In this scenario, Harris would be the 11th man, which is wild. Depth and talent level wouldn't be the problem, indeed. As always, fascinated to see how this thing shakes out.

At some point does the number of scholarships become less important? Why can’t an amount equal to the scholarship plus taxes be added into the NIL payment in addition to the agreed NIL payment, freeing up one of the 13 scholarships.

The risk of developing young players are much higher these days. See Skyy and Epps. Patience won't necessarily lead to success anymore.
I would argue that developing young players and having patience (ie allowing for some time in the system together) will absolutely still lead to success...as much as it ever did, at least.

The trick is retaining said young players long enough to reap the rewards. Not easy in this climate as I said in my original post.

However, throwing a new mix of transfers and freshman together every summer is also not without its risks. See last year.

Guards: PG TBD, Shannon
Harris
Moretti - reported as a multi-year project
DGL - reported as likely not be ready this year (general FR issues & Coleman no FR PG)

So is Harris getting 15m/game as the backup for Shannon and PG TBD, or did I miss someone? Another portal TBD?
