Add Hawkins, Shannon and Dennis to our 2024 rostercast on Torvik and we move from 49th (currently) to 16th.
I really hope we land RayJ Dennis. But I couldn’t help but notice that the DENNIS System is a spot-on description of the portal era.

Like anyone with eyesight, I see Ty is not a prolific jump shooter or FT shooter. But my eyes also tell me he is an extremely efficient and capable scorer who is sorely needed on this team for a myriad of other reasons. Love me some Ty Rodgers anytime but the last minute.

And I do not see any reason he cannot improve at the line if he gets the right coaching in the physics and physiology of the process.

Starters:
PG
TJ
Domask
QG
Hawkins

Bench:
Dain
Harmon
Ty
Goode
Hansberry
Buck

There will only be 3 out of this group who get significant tick … Earn your minutes … There will be competition …

Guys who won’t play meaningful minutes:
DGL
Moretti
Do you have concerns that Hansberry may leave due to lack of PT? Losing 3+ years of Hansberry for a year of QG in win now mode would kill me.

The only stretch against Penn State all year the we looked good was when Coleman played like he was an athletic big man and could shoot over everyone on their team. Once that stopped we lost again.

Wish he played like a big who can go do guard things to take advantage of mismatches. That's his peak. Instead of a guard who sometimes realizes he's really tall and can go inside.

This is exactly who needs to be. He's a stretch 5 that can hit an open 3 and has ball skills. That's what the NBA wants to see him do, not shoot 25' 3 pointers and pass outside when he's 5' from the basket.

It’s possible.

It’s also possible he starts every game and still leaves.

Like Curbelo, Miller, Melendez, Epps, & Skyy.
Obviously. I think the calculus should be to retain young highly-ranked talent even if some leave. We were saying that we are the #1 development program in the country. Outside of Ayo and Kofi, I think that shine is starting to wear off when we keep getting 4/5th year guys that don't improve their draft stock.

Thats essentially our line up from last year that couldn't shoot. QG and Domask are likely to be starters and came here to provide better shooting and passing. I agree with Piper and Warner that they most likely shall with Hawk at the 5 and when Dain comes in Hawk will be getting a rest with Ty in or Hawk at the 4. Ty can still play 25 plus minutes with his versatility and ability support so many roles. Unfortunately shooting isn't one of them. We just need more efficient shooters on the floor next season. Domask, QG, vet PG, and a healthy Goode provide that. Hopefully 2 of them on the floor most of the time.
In my opinion, swap Domask for Ty for the starters. Dain’s skill set will be amplified with a real point guard. He can be a very efficient scorer if he gets the ball in the right spot. I also think CH can best take advantage of his height by coming from the perimeter.

Hawkins would play fewer minutes but have better numbers.

I would have to say this past season was disappointing the way it played out…we did still get 20 and won some HUGE games early.

AND…if that’s a Brad Underwood, down year…I’ll take it.

At this point, it goes without saying…but
I credit him with getting the stench off the program. So much better than the sewer we crawled out of in the Groce/Late Weber years obviously.

This season however, wasn’t embarrassing but it was definitely dysfunctional and just not very good basketball IMO.

College B-ball is in a state of flux…with NIL and the Transfer Portal…and everyone is having to recalibrate. There’s a lot of gambling big to win big. Who knows what strategies will end up winning out.

I think this year was either a departure from Brad-classic or it’s just a natural part of his evolution as a coach. (Maybe both)
I wholeheartedly agree with you comment the if a down year for him is 20 wins, I'm on board. He replaced 4 seniors, an All American and 80%+ of all of his production and flipped it into a tournament team. Pretty darn good.

I also agree with your point that NIL and the portal have changed the landscape of everything.

The question still stands. If the baseline is that he hasn't won a Big Ten regular season championship, tournament championship or NCAA Tournament championship every year...then the comment holds water. I'm not a big fan of second place, but 20+ wins year in and year out with our only complaint being that we haven't gotten to the Sweet 16, I'll take it. Do people remember where this program was at before he took over? Awfully short memories by some(not saying you).

Well BU closed on Domask really quickly for a reason. He is a 3x all conference player that shot threes at a high volume with a good percentage while being the focal point of defenses. He also does basically every skill well. Like I said I feel Ty will play 25 plus minutes but we will have our shooters on the floor. I feel its more likely Dain doesn't start if both Hawk and TSJ come back. If Dain and Ty both start with TSJ and Hawk who are the two shooters we can count on? Who starts isn't as important to me as having guys will roles we need to make defending the entire floor with spacing more difficult. Ty too will be better as will others with 2 or 3 of our new additions (im including a vet PG) or a healthy Goode on the floor with them that can shoot amd pass it better than last season.

Look at it this way... When it's time for Amani to make that decision, he will be at the top of the depth chart. At that point, he will just have to worry about Mr. Johnson.

He can't hit threes consistently at a high level yet from the college range. I think his best year is 28 percent and the biggest reason he should come back. Which i hope he does. He vastly improved as the year went on. I think he can and will improve with not so much riding on him to make others better.

So hypothetically say we get RayJ. Hypothetically Coleman and TJ come back as well, filling up our scholarships. Hypothetically Hunter Dickinson wants to come here because National Championship aspirations, $$$, and TJ. What is stopping him from making an extra 50k per year and being a 'walk-on'? If he's already projected to make millions, couldn't the NIL collective cough up more to cover tuition? Besides tuition, what else does a scholarship guarantee student athletes?

I actually agree with much of what you said here. But we need to do a better job of assessing the willingness of guys to fight and earn minutes or to tough it out when they don't get minutes.
There have been over 1500 kids in the transfer portal this off-season. Most, if not all, the blue bloods have had multiple players leave. UConn alone lost five to the portal. This is the reality of the sport.

DGL believing that he will earn minutes isn’t a bad thing but most kids won’t know how they’ll react to lack of playing time until it happens. You gotta remember that college is usually the first taste of that for D1 athletes.

I mean, the real question is, what's stopping Luther Head from paying for him to come here?
