I think this is one of those things that gets repeated a lot but isn't necessarily true. It is true that teams are shooting less midrange shots than before but it's still an important area of the floor. I would rather a player take an open 12 foot shot than take 2 more dribbles into traffic for a contested layup, for example. It seems like last year we had no guys who were willing or capable of doing that on a regular basis.

Here are a few varying shot charts from last year. Some teams, like us, do focus heavily on layups and threes (look how similar our shot chart is to UConn) but that's not a universal strategy.

Yeah. I concur.

I thought it was whack at the time. The dude was an All-American and it was like people couldn’t wait to get him out the door. 😆

Of course, it was all about the perceived limitations of the 4 around 1…thing with Kofi in the post that was fresh in folks’ minds. We SUPPOSEDLY”just needed nothing but position-less, face up wings with an avg. height of 6 foot 8.5 inches that could go get us one whenever…like a handful of NBA teams or some of the so-called “made for March” teams of 2-3 years ago. People really had visions of sugar plums with that whole thing…

It was implied/even stated we weren’t even gonna need to utilize post ups AT ALL anymore. 😂

This video is a little dated…but I found it interesting if you have the time. It hits on some of these themes.

Kofi was so incredibly unstoppable at this level. Imagine if they actually surrounded him with 4 shooters so nobody could double team him. He would have feasted inside and on offensive rebounds.

The problem with 2022 team was that they simply lacked shooting and any depth to surround Kofi. Frazier was good but streaky, Plummer lost minutes because he was a defensive liability, and Grandison was injured.

I like Damonte Williams but he couldn't shoot or score at all and likewise with Hawkins so teams were just triple teaming Kofi at all times.

Are we honestly spending time picking apart the perceived weaknesses of TSJ who was our best player night in and night out, took a beating to get to the line more than any Illinois player in years, and was our only reliable scorer?

My only complaint about him is he is too nice a kid and should have demanded the ball more. Kid is a baller.
It comes off to me as more of a rebuttal to the next year BIG POY prediction as opposed to a "picking apart".

He is likely too slow to ever have much of a role in NBA. Might as well stay and make a few million.
Edey’s an interesting case, I would think. Yes, as Kofi learned, the NBA is no longer a “big man’s” game. But, Edey’s so much taller and his coordination is excellent that there probably might be a role for him in the league. The question is, will someone spend a draft pick on him?

On the other hand, Edey could come back to school and make good money. But will he maximize his monetary potential at Purdue? The Boilers and Painter seem to be on the negative side of NIL, so even though Edey’s professed his love and loyalty for Purdue, is West Lafayette where he’ll be best serving his bank account?

Mr. Tibbs

southeast DuPage
His first year was 20-21, so that means no bonus COVID year, right? That would mean 1 more year.
the 20-21 year was the year that didn’t count as there was no fans

the 19-20 year was the year with no tournament
but that year counted

This is the website. I think it's awesome. You can look at individual players. I really hope our coaching staff, and really any coaching staff has data like this. If the link brings up what I had selected, it shows Grant Nelson is really only effective in the paint, and on the right side of the block. Helps you know how to defend him. For us fans, it let's us see, is that guy really as terrible from 3 as I remember. Does he really only take 3s?
Great data, our transfers aren't very good 3 point shooters, but shoot above average from the corner 3s. Domask and Guerrier and very solid in the paint. RayJ would be a solid upgrade, he has above average from every spot on the court. Our weakeness will continue to be routine 3s, unless players coming back all improve. Dainja needs to play more, very efficient down low. Coleman was effective down low as well, he just wasn't aggressive enough to take those shots.

But I thought we were big boys at the NIL game?

IMHO, I want my PG to be a distributor first, able to finish at the rim like Epps and similar, and a knock down 50% guy from the arc when open and the clock running out...which is often the case for the PG. Also determined to stay in front of his man no matter what.

I had a buddy who was that kind of player. But he watched Walt Frazier play at SIU a time or two too many and decided he could not stay in front of him. So he played another sport in college and was a two time All-American. Took him awhile to figure out no one could stay in front of Walt.

Great video, thanks for sharing!

To recap for those who didn't watch, mid range jumpers (not to be confused with long twos) are valuable when taken by capable players. But more importantly, when a player is a threat to score from mid range, it opens up the floor for everyone else. They're still not as efficient as open threes and layups though. So, as others have said, it absolutely depends on having the RIGHT dudes taking those shots.

I think this topic was originally in reference to Hawkins. I'd love to see him develop a 10-15 footer. Not as a go-to option or anything but if he could shoot 50% on a few attempts per game, the area around the hoop starts to open up for Dainja and other players cutting to the basket.

Edey’s NBA career will last about as long as Kofi’s so far. He doesn’t move particularly well which is part of the reason Fairleigh Dickinson was able to pull the upset. They were simply more athletic and it caused problems for Purdue. Of course, it didn’t help that Purdue absolutely stunk shooting the ball.

If I am Edey I would play college ball somewhere where I could get paid like Hunter did. Only reason I stay at PU is if I thought the pieces around me could win a championship. However there are a lot of teams if you gave them Edey would be better than PU.
