Please forgive my error on the specifics of the injury. Mia culpa. I'm not sure how my error changes the post-injury concerns.
And Tristan Newton shot 36.6% from 3 last season. That's about 15 percentage points north of what Williams managed. UCONN's worst 3-point shooting guard, Andre Jackson Jr. shot 7 percentage points more than Williams. Moreover, I love our team, but comparing what we have returning to the talent UCONN had last season is an apples vs. bowling balls comparison. Just because UCONN were able to dominate with a guard who was a so-so 3-point shooter doesn't mean we would be able to do the same with our guys who didn't perform half as well from 3-point land as the UCONN team did last year.
As a sophomore at ECU (the same referenced point in their careers) Newton shot 26.2% from 3 and 34.8% from the floor. Williams shot 23.1% from 3 and 41.7% from the floor.

I’m also not comparing our team to last years UConn. I am comparing one specific player to a guy who made a team a national title winner. A guy who posters on this board would have poo poo’d because of poor shooting statistics.

Injury aside, Williams is a high ceiling athlete, plus plus defender and capable distributor. If you want to be upset because it’s unknown whether he can return to pre-injury form, fine. That’s a fair argument. But if we get a similar player to sophomore year at Temple, I think we will all be very happy.

i think the kid can be a player for the team, but i also fear a replay of Austin Hucherson.

ok. here are my concerns about Chris Johnson. Hasnt played a game yet in college and is already leaving. Is this Skye Clark all over again?
There is definitely some risk with Johnson. Is
he ready to take over as the lead point guard? The even bigger question is whether he will be eligible to transfer this year after transfering.
Finally, would having jeremiah williams on the roster deter him from wanting to come here since he was already recruited over at kansas?

You were doing pretty well until you wrote this sentence. Andre Jackson Jr. was a solid contributor. He did not "(make) a team a national title winner."

"I’m also not comparing our team to last years UConn."

By implying that there's any legit predictive comparison between the performance of the team Andre Jackson Jr. played with last year to our team with Jeremiah WIlliams at the point this upcoming year, yeah. You are.

haha your last line is what now? No a top 50 recruit is not afraid of Jeremiah Williams. He has no clue who Jeremiah Williams is.

I don't fault a guy for leaving a program that he felt betrayed him. It's one thing to be recruited over after your Fr year, but it's something entirely different to be recruited over before you even get to campus. I don't fault a kid at all for saying hey, this is not the situation we talked about during my recruitment.

I doubt he comes here. With 0 knowledge, it looks like Alabama was in his final list, and Alabama just lost their PG to Arizona, so makes me think Alabama will be much more likely to land him than us.

Now that said, if Jeremy Fears were to do something similar and say coach, you told me those guys were going pro, that is a guy I'd be all over. I still have concerns about his shooting, but at this point, beggars can't be choosers, and of course he was a Burger Boy. While not a great shooter, he does everything else well.

You seem to downplay the importance of a capable PG, yet point out that the 2005 team had two great PGs. Don't you think having Deron and Dee contributed to the superb ball movement that team had from all five guys on the floor? Last year, TSJ, Hawk, and others could have moved w/o the ball like Richard Hamilton. It wouldn't have mattered cause no one was getting them the ball in the right place.
He does have a point that you don't need a ball dominant point guard that's putting up if your team as a whole moves the ball well and doesn't just stand around the perimeter.

Last years team besides not having a good point guard also just didn't run an offense they just lazily stood around the perimeter and ran some dribble hand offs. A lot of guys(cough cough Coleman) also would hold the ball, pumpfake, and let the defense reset instead of looking to swing, nobody really cut to the basket.

Adding guys like Domask, Harmon, and even Guerrier who aren't technically point guards but are skilled players that can handle the ball a bit and move without the value goes a long way.

Hmmmmm........ I am not a trainer or MD, but not able to jump or have explosive movement sounds like a ways out from being able to play.
When he says "jump", I think he means  JUMP.

If he's at 60% and not on crutches, he is farther ahead than I would have guessed and he can practice.

This is good news to me. I hope we learn more.

(by the way, it's "Sincere". Watch out for spell check.)

I wouldn't call last year a success.
I thought it was a success considering we literally had NO point guard the last 12 plus games of the season. Started the year with 2 highly rated pg's, no one could have predicted their meltdowns.

I was outside today. It was nice again. I didn't see any point guards.
Let's be careful what we wish for.

I am guessing we lose one of Moretti or DGL in next couple weeks if they bring in another guard.
Maybe both.

No thanks to Johnson, we did this whole song and dance with a "great" recruit that got recruited over and became available late in the game last year and it was a disaster.

Cutting Moretti would be a dirty move. I don't like it.

&%$! I just read my own post and meant NOT "Sincere". That was not helpful.

If I was DGL, I would be ultra focused on the opportunity in front of me.
I hope he gets a chance. He looks to be a gifted offensive player.
If no Williams at start of year, or maybe all year, Underwood will default to Harmon and Rodgers and Harris is my guess.
If they bring in another guy to play starting PG, then that pushes all of those guys down a spot in the rotation. Harris will be hard pressed to find minutes.
Maybe staff think DGL is PG in waiting and can use the year to develop in practice and the weight room and he can play a lot Soph year.
But kids want to play and play now.

Nope. Plus, he already used his medical redshirt last season. He only gets one. He could take a regular redshirt. Either way, redshirts count as scholarships.

Upon further review, I am dubious that the arrogant NCAA will grant a waiver for a second penalty free transfer. They will likely say that the fact he missed the season with a serious injury is moot, since he was otherwise eligible. A medical redshirt is not a listed exception.

Note they are no longer granting waivers for coaching changes.
I don’t know how the one-time, no-sit transfer exemption rule reads, but I would think that the argument for a waiver would be he hasn’t used that one-time exemption since he sat out last year. Essentially he flipped things — sitting for first transfer and using exemption on second. Now if the rule specifically says first time transfer or if you formally have to request that one-time exemption and he did so prior to getting hurt, then things get murkier. Obviously, one never knows what the heck the NCAA will do and the Illini seem to have bad luck in this arena, but have to think there is at least a decent chance he can get waver.

Well, I'll never call an 11-9 season with a first round exit a success. Perhaps a year after a long run and guys leaving for the NBA.

As to Clark, it sure could have been predicted. He had plenty of red flags.
